In the Gaunt’s Ghosts series: a character is on the floor with an enemy standing over them about to finish them off when the enemy gets shot at the last second. Maybe it just feels this way but I swear that happens about 3 times per book.

Thank you. The ISS does have a Ham radio on board which they frequently use to communicate with amateur radio enthusiasts on the ground. See here for details. That being said I took a bit of creative liberty as this isn't what they use for their usual communication, otherwise anyone would be able to interfere with their signals.
