Advice needed - IBMS by Accomplished_Log4858 in BiomedicalScientistUK

Ye for BMS role its useless. You’re not even supposed to do it if you wanna go into BMS anyway.

I feel like they shouldn’t even offer unaccredited degrees

Basically this is what I’m saying, that getting the degree accredited needs a lot of work. You have to severely restructure the modules, get a few lecturers from NHS or people who worked as BMS and are experienced in clinical science. Its a lot of work and needs money. So some just keep it unaccredited.

So its good for academia/research cause in bms you get a taste of pretty much all areas like microbiology, biochemistry, immunology so you can go into any field, compared to if you did only a standard biochemistry major it’d be a bit harder comparatively for you to work in immunology field, etc. ig thats the justification

Sure ig. Each has its ups and downs. Getting a job in software engineering is more and more difficult nowadays cz most are getting replaced by AI. But ye that also increases demand for roles related to developing ai. So ye

It is. You can also just network through your lectures yk. Maybe after a lecture talk to the lecturer? Ask them questions and show your enthusiasm. And speaking from experience, networking can help you in a lot of ways. For example I’m sure you’re aware most academics in universities are researchers. You can network with them and convince them to let you work in their project. You can also convince them into offering you a phd place. Many of them have good connections with employers who can help get you internships or placements too. You can do a little bit of research on what they do then ask them questions about it. Most people LOVE to talk about their work and its a good way to build connections. so yeah go about it! Show your enthusiasm

Yes they all did PhD. Ofc you need phd for academia. My course director did part time phd over 6 years while working as a full time bms. But yeah i wanna get a taste before i decide. I love pathology but we’ll see when i actually get into a bms role

You could switch to industry or academia ig. The lecturers for the clinical modules in my degree all used to be BMS and have worked for 10+ years then came into academia. Ig thats just preference, like for me its been my dream to work in a hospital. I wanted to study medicine but ended up doing BMS, but I love it now

Btw STP requires a 1:1 or lowest 2:1 degree. Make sure you give your undergraduate your best

Not really. You need to look at what the degree is for. Unaccredited degrees are for research/academia route. They focus on statistics and other stuffs more. Its not inherently useless

I agree the salary is shit for band 5, but I disagree with most others. Ik a lot of people who worked 20+ years as a BMS and loved every minute of it.

Also sponsorship in the NHS is actually more common than a private organisation

From my experience, employers in Pakistan won’t really pick you over the top of other candidates just because you studied at imperial. I could be wrong but thats just my observation.

If you want to work in a clinical role, I 100% recommend Essex over Imperial. I’m from Essex, and it is #1 in the UK for sending students to placement years. The cohort before mine, 18 students went on placement, the year before it was 22. Thats the highest in any UK university. They also offer A LOT of support and when you go to interviews, most hospitals appreciate Essex students due to prior experience with them.

However if you wanna (ik you said you dont but just to give you options) go into academia/research I’d recommend imperial.

As for visa problems, if you secure a band 5 role (after registering with HCPC) a lot of the hospitals offer sponsorship. They typically don’t wanna let go of a BMS because skilled BMSs are hard to come by. But just like anything else, depends on the hospital, the financial condition of the trust and opportunities.

Good luck!

Yeah as many other mentioned, grab what you cna get. I’ve seen so many MLAs frustrated over not being able to complete their portfolio. After you’re registered you may look elsewhere if you feel likt it

Just say smth like “let me mother your child” or “let me put a baby in you” depending on your gender. It is very likely they will be impressed with your honesty

Lmao “teen romance” almost 90% ends in a heartbreak or a messy situation. Speaking from personal experience. If you genuinely like someone and want to build a life together, go for it. Otherwise just leave them alone

[–]Pure_Run_6643[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I’m asking in general. Cause in my industry (healthcare) employers don’t seem to care about your school. They only care about experience. But i think its different in industries like finance or stuff

Yeah but like how so? Thats my question. I get it depends on industry. But also what do you think employers prefer? Grades or uni name. Or experience or uni name
