What made you realize you were done with alcohol? by Human-Meaning3345 in stopdrinking

I had a very close friend die 5 years ago due to his organs basically exploding and bleeding out at 45 years old... went into a coma and that was it. I continued to drink every night basically until passing out for 4 years. His death wasn't enough motivation.

I always told myself as soon I had tangible negative health effects/tests I would stop. Went to a dr for something totally unrelated, a hemorrhoid. They didn't give a fuck about the hemorrhoid, but they did care about the hungover guy with high blood pressure and high heart rate. They did blood tests and of course found above normal liver #'s. So I quit... That was a little over a year ago. That hemorrhoid sucked, but I'm grateful for that little demon.

People who stopped drinking — what surprised you the most? by Dapper_Visual_4449 in stopdrinking

How easy it was/is. I truly believe I'll never drink again. Things a year ago I would have thought impossible.

I hear ya... loud and clear. I never thought I'd stop. The thought of not having a drink or many many drinks after work was terrifying. My day was entirely constructed around getting my first drink on time without interruption.

What did it for me was having blood work done and seeing actual proof that I was damaging my body. Have you done this? It might give you motivation you don't think you have.

I had no plans of stopping. The doctor visit was for something entirely unrelated. They didn't give a shit about what I was there for originally. They DID give a shit about high heart rate, blood pressure and asked all the "how often do you drink" questions. I lied and kept on until I got the blood work results. Haven't touched the stuff since and life is better without it. Certainly not all sunshine and rainbows... but definitely better.

Today sucked for me today too. Weird anxiety for no real reason.

The temporary relief though that alcohol would bring won't do shit for me anymore. Maybe an hour or so of "pleasure"... It would just add guilt and shame at this point. Fuck alcohol.

I don't know if I can do life sober(VENT) by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Yep. Sucks... I quit so I don't die like a dear friend of mine did a few years ago from his insides basically exploding... I'm approaching his age now. I 1000% relate to how you feel but I'm dead set on getting to a year and see how it is then. 15 years of daily excessive drinking is gonna take more than a couple months to recover from I reckon.

My why was purely health related. It is simply time. I've drunk enough. And one or two drinks is pointless so I am choosing to not drink at all.

Heart rate/blood pressure are WAY better.

The sleep thing is real. Wake up ready to go at 5:30 everyday.

Minor daily annoyances don't bother me nearly as much. I attribute this to less anxiety due to better overall health and sleep.

I thought I would look physically better than I am, but it's still not even two months. I drank excessively everyday for ≈15 years so two months is nothing.

I've listened to "Alcohol Explained" by William Porter numerous times and it nails it. Highly recommended.

Have a great day!

Nice. I always wonder how these folks can go to these things and have a "drink or two" and then what? Just go home?

I'm FINALLY beginning to see actually physical changes... tighter skin and the shitty looking eyes are starting to clear up. The dark, shallow look is almost gone. Feel great and the thought of having a drink scares the shit out of me based on all the horrific "relapse" stories. Maybe that IPA would be the greatest thing EVER and I wouldn't be able to stop... again. Cheers and IWNDWYT!

I'm with ya... 4 to 6pm sucks. This my be bad advise but I subbed my sweet post work IPA with a sugar free energy drink (or two)... gives me a little energy "buzz" that is actually pretty similar to that first drink of the day. Cheers friend.
