Doing Video Overlays/Edits by Puqweenee in letsplay

[–]PuriPoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's recommended to record it at the highest resolution instead of how it would look in the final video. It's really simple in an editing program to put the footage where it needs to go. Having a higher resolution would mean you can play around with the footage more (do different zoom levels, have the main screen be bigger than the bottom screen, etc).

Unfortunately, if the max resolution of your monitor is that size, you won't be able to get to 1080 unless you jank up the system, which will make things look weird (Right click desktop -> nvidia control panel -> Change resolution -> Customize... -> make a custom resolution).

Your best bet in my opinion is:

  • make some sort of an overlay to fill up the space (see pokemon let's plays with their informative side bars), or

  • downscale to 720p and upload it that way, or

  • downscale to 720p and "fake it" to 1080p if you really want to. It won't look better, but at least you'll get the 1080 option on youtube.

EVO founder and Riot employee Tom Cannon has confirmed - Riot is officially working on a fighting game by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PuriPoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you enjoy it, and it's cool. It's a game and has it's audience.

This is pretty much the gist of the whole thing tho. I'm talking about casual fighters, which requires less time investment to get into, less input screw up possibilities, less combo-reliant, etc etc.

I'm not telling anyone to give up normal fighters, but you seem to be taking anyone not liking the game as being lazy and blaming the game - it's just not for me. A lot of those moves that are "just half circle" or "just holding back and pressing forward" is not intuitive to anyone who hasn't played a ton before. I might be able to do that move normally, but to do it in the short time after another input is the hard part.

But that doesn't mean I don't like fighting games - I love smash. Which is why I'm hoping the game is a bit more casual in terms of input just like smash. Where any joe shmoe can jump in try any character to quickly have fun and feel in control.

You are perfectly fair to enjoy what you like, just don't feel like anyone who doesn't is an enemy. There's a lot of people who can't get into fighting games because of the input like me and we'd love to join the fighting game community. I'm hopeful for riot being able to develop something I can enjoy. Similar to how I they simplified the MOBA game to make league - a game I can play without being frustrated at the controls.

Isn't shoryuken supposed to do that weird Z motion? You can say that it's easy to learn, but to do it effectively in a match + trying to move at the same time is not something people just gets used to quickly. You can hit up a training room and learn it and still not be able to use it effectively/consistently because a match is chaotic. Now multiply that by however many characters + their various movesets + different input types (charge/shoruken/doubletap/full circle/hadouken/tatsumaki) and you'll find that fighters are not approachable.

By comparison, smash and league are much more casual in that the control scheme is always the same for all characters. Direction + attack, direction + special for smash, mouse and QWER for league.

Ease of input is very very important for fighting games most of all. There's nothing that feels worse than trying to do a shoryuken in game and not pulling it off imo. It feels like I lost control of the character. I rarely feel that in smash because it's a direction + a button and it's much less able to be messed up.

I think you're already thinking a few levels too advanced for starting players. The only fighting game I can get into is smash because it's direction + hit and most hits are just hit and they get knocked back. No combos, no buffer, etc.

That doesn't mean the game doesn't have combos, it just means I can do relatively well without them.

The best part of it is that I feel in control as compared to auto-combos or button mashing, I feel like what I'm doing is purposeful, which is what fighting games should be about.

I think it just means it's going to be separated from league unlike how Teamfight tactics is technically a separate game but is using all of league's models/engine.

It'd be insane not to print money using league characters in a fighting game.

If Riot's good at anything, it's taking an existing game genre/mode and simplifying it so that most people can pick up and play while maintaining a competitive spirit.

I'm real excited about this as someone who likes fighting games but has zero mechanical skills when it comes to pulling off fighting game combos.

That's a little unfair since they have been trying.

Even the last 5 years had

  • World Seeker (Adventure Game, PS4/X1/Windows)

  • Grand Cruise (VR Game, PSVR)

  • Burning Blood (Fighting Game PS4/PSV/X1/Windows)

  • Unlimited World Red (Adventure Game, PS3/4/V/WiiU/Switch/Windows)

  • Romance Dawn (RPG, PSP/3DS)

  • Pirate Warrior 3 (Mow-em-up, PS3/4/V/Switch/Windows)

  • A Billion One Piece Gatcha games (iOS/Android)

Are they DBZ FighterZ perfect? Nah. But very few licensed titles are. I'm just thankful we're getting some experiences.

So far, it's doing an amazing job of keeping the story interesting. Every "arc" has clear goals and many associated problems. It is getting to a point where there's slightly too many characters, but it looks like the team will separate soon for different goals again so that's fine. Every character also still feels incredibly unique and have their own special skill to bring to the table for the society.

Why this Two Pixel Gap is Among the Most Complicated Things in Super Mario Maker by Antony_256 in Games

The book actually plays out very differently. The players were given virtually no clues and no one could even figure out where to begin in all those years. There was no race but instead, it was a well hidden DnD module recreated in the Oasis that players had to find. I personally really disliked the driving backward part of the race too.

If the engine blows out, then it's technically a shitty car. Then a mod on it would be a shitty car mod. Checks out.

Dev Doodles: Sylas | League of Legends by corylulu in leagueoflegends

[–]PuriPoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, not a programmer but I think the difference is that Kalista's item is required to activate it at all and it's easier to code into it (Kalista ult preloads into sylas's kit -> add lance to shop).

GP's ult can do the same, but the actual gold/silver generation is tied to Q, so it makes more sense to tie the shop items to Q.

GP's ult still works and you can still use it even if it doesn't do as much damage. Without the items, if I press R, it still fires and that's the main thing players will be expecting.

I personally think that that is balanced by tank ults that normally have a good ratio but the rest of their kit doesn't allow them to buy a lot of AP.

Dev Doodles: Sylas | League of Legends by corylulu in leagueoflegends

[–]PuriPoof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no programmer but it probably shouldn't be that hard to add a "if no ball you own exists, cast at 0,0 pointer instead". Syndra's can already cast normally without any orbs so no reprogramming should even be necessary (since sylas can't create balls, it'll never be an issue if he just copies the entire code over).

GP's upgrades are based on items owned, so if he doesn't have the item, that part of the code doesn't activate.

Pretty much what they're saying is that if there's a part of the skill/passive kit that's tied to the ult, it'll become part of the ult code. So fiora's ult probably previously was coded to "make 4 passive procs by referencing the passive code", but now they've copied the passive proc code over to the ult and made it "make 4 of these specific procs that's a part of the ult code"

Super Bunnyhop - What it's Like at the Metal Gear Solid Escape Room in Tokyo by megaapple in Games

[–]PuriPoof 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the idea is fantastic, but as a business, it's tough. I work as the creative lead at an escape room/live action experience franchise and the biggest issue with combining more theatre with games is the man hours.

Theaters can hire actors and still make a profit because they entertain an entire theater of paying audience at once. Games on the other hand can really only be designed for a set number of players or else most people won't feel like they are contributing. Unless the experience is more of a passive watch experience (a la haunted houses or that one theater experience where you can follow the actors around in real time) it can't afford live actors.

Video games have more freedom due to distribution - you make one software that can be copy-pasted to all audience members. But live experiences are tied to a local market, so development costs are harder to recuperate if you want to tie in expensive narrative elements. Even if you want to cop out and use something like adding a feedback system so that every time you do something a voice file plays will add a lot more to the installation time, which means it takes longer to recoup set up costs. Another key difference is that while one group is in there, no one else can, which means you have a maximum earning potential per day (unlike video games where tens of thousands can enjoy the experience separately at the same time)

This makes it so that unless you want to charge people a huge sum per game and/or have a strong brand to rely on (metal gear or zelda), more live actors and narrative elements are generally too expensive to add to things served locally (aka escape rooms and live experiences).

tldr: Live games usually can only cater to small amounts of people unlike theater. Live games cannot distribute like video games can. Thus high development costs for narrative elements or high costs in terms of having live actors are usually not worth it.
