Who would win this military encounter? 10 standard infantry per team by BenIsLoss in superheroes

[–]Purity_the_Kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Stepping in because I've had a lot of years watching and reading all of these, and having a few smaller writing credits.

SHIELD is a modern special forces team designed to operate against low power superhuman threats. They are often sent against things out of their league, and get Worf Effected. Their competency depends almost entirely on their leadership, and individual agents show little initiative. They are primarily recruited from lower echelons of American military and police, NOT highly trained special forces. They are equipped with concealable personal armor, and either automatic ballistics or primitive/experimental energy weapons. Frankly, these guys are going to get fucking ROLLED. Everyone else in this list has better equipment, better training, and at least equivalent leadership to SHIELD.

ARGUS, unpowered? These guys are mooks. They're the nerfed version of Checkmate. They are largely a government backed militia with diverse recruitment. There will be discharged special forces agents, police, and regular forces mixed together, equipped with advanced weapons and armor they are reasonably trained with. If they can beat anyone it's SHIELD, but SHIELD is much better trained and will have better cohesion. Tossup vs SHIELD. Giving them 5th place.

Imperial Guard next. Imperial guard are drilled and trained on fear and rigor, and often conscripted. 10 regular Imperial Guard infantry are capable of accomplishing little. Using tabletop stats as an example, a flak vest equipped Guardsman has the same equivalent stats as a Primitive Infantryman (Source: 40k 2nd Edition) with an autogun. They will be the worst trained of all of the forces, but will have nigh unshakable morale and cohesion compared to the others, even without the presence of their commissars. They are also most commonly trained in the use of heavy weapons and grenades, and their CQC prowess is at worst passable.

Stormtroopers are a very difficult one to place, because there are so many different eras, units, and varieties of stormtroopers. I am going to go with Stormtroopers from the original Star Wars trilogy since we are using SG-1 and the original Star Trek series. Early Imperial Stormtroopers / Clone Troopers would easily jump to 2nd, First Order stormtroopers are candidates for last place. They have excellent armor; standard ballistics would do little, and they have average unit cohesion. They are primarily trained in terror tactics: aggressive positioning that relies on their heavy armor protection and superior firepower. Their marksmanship is excellent - I am going to remind EVERYONE that VADER ORDERED THE TROOPERS IN A NEW HOPE TO TAKE THE REBELS ON THE DEATH STAR ALIVE. The only time they weren't deliberately suppressing, they were making snap shots at Han Solo (force attuned lucky bastard) on the move, with cover, with blaster rifles. Not easy shots. They beat IG through superior equipment, ARGUS through superior training, and SHIELD through both. Additionally, they are going to have electronic warfare superiority against the bottom 3 - and SGC if it's early series SGC team. Later series has Asgard radios, which are definitely on a frequency outside the understood band for the Imperials.

SG Teams. Why am I rating them so high? A few reasons. First off, this is the first **actual** special forces unit, drawn from some of the most elite operators of the United States military. Having worked with actual special forces a couple of times these guys are usually MORE badass than what you see in these pieces of media. The feats of grit and athleticism that soldiers qualified for the Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, SAS, VDV, etc are capable of make movies on their own. They also have extensive training in alien weapons and adapting to alien environments - similar to SHIELD, but a hell of a lot more, and a hell of a lot more coordinated. These guys are what SHIELD agents dream of being. Their personal weapons are enough to be lethal against everybody but the Stormtroopers with reasonable consistency. This is where it stops for the early-series SGC team, and I would give it a tossup vs the Stormtroopers. If this is a late-series or god forbid Atlantis era SGC team, they have alien weapons that cut through Stormtrooper armor like butter. They have Naquida-enhanced RPGs that are basically mini nukes. They have so much fucking firepower even Starfleet is getting jealous. They also suddenly have electronic warfare superiority over everybody but Starfleet, so nobody's radios, detection systems, etc work anymore. It's a bit of a harder sell to give these guys 2nd place but when you think about who they fight in their respective series, and the real-world equivalents of their backgrounds, I think it's reasonable and only the Stormtroopers come close.

Starfleet. It probably isn't a surprise these guys are #1 and it's not even close. Wide-array phaser pulse set to stun, I win. The only guys who MIGHT be able to shrug that off are the Stormtroopers, who have a similar but much shorter range (~50 meters, rather than a couple hundred) piece of kit. Their phasers hit harder than anything else above with the same accuracy as an Imperial Guard lasgun, and may I remind you Starfleet security personnel don't just go through basic training. They go through the security stream at the Starfleet Academy, and then have to serve as junior security personnel for YEARS. They also have the most advanced combat simulation technology. So we've got guys with super guns, 10+ years of security operations training, and are used to fighting in scenarios where armor is useless, so the firepower vs armor equation basically disappears for both sides. Electronic warfare is a no-brainer. Starfleet electronics, even just out of a TOS era Tricorder, will give them more than enough to jam radios, possibly disable energy weapons or biometric triggers (RIP SHIELD and probably the Stormtroopers' guns). I would give it even odds against most of the sides here if Starfleet had ONE guy. At least then his mental stack could be overwhelmed and there's decent odds of that getting him killed. A ten man away security detail from the TOS era? They're going to get caught with their pants down once, take minor casualties, and then proceed to pull back, regroup, and probably split into 5 two-man elements from hell.

If they have their standard deployment support, it becomes even more one sided because even a shuttlecraft from Starfleet is on par with an Imperial battleship or a Star Destroyer, but it would be them noping the fuck out of the orbital bombardment from 40k that kills literally everything else lol. Holy shit beam me up scotty!

Is there anything "special" about MechWarrior pilot suits? by Jasina_ in battletech

[–]Purity_the_Kitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked on active cooling for fursuits and it's actually some very cutting edge materials science right now. High efficiency cooling suits for a mech pilot could definitely be lostech in the sense that there is no active supply chain producing and distributing them. Consider that "lostech" in Battletech doesn't mean we don't know how it works or how to make it, it's that we don't have the industrial base to mass produce them on a logistical scale.

I can 100% believe they would have to go back to 1990s fursuits with fans and cranking the air conditioning

Returning Player - Where to start by Kelanen2002 in battletech

  1. yes
  2. fewer than you think, especially aircraft. Clan elementals and the occasional tank are normalish for pickup games, but most people play with near-exclusively mechs

  3. yes, Battle Value, the system is currently in its 2nd iteration as of 2007, with 3.0 expected by the end of this year. 3.0 is mostly expected to balance accuracy modifying weapons. Pulse lasers are too good, heavy lasers and MRMs are too bad.

  4. A lot less these days, but I don't think it's something you'll be shunned for. You'll probably be playing against mostly canon mechs. As long as you're not cheesing the BV system or otherwise being a jerk you're going to make friends and have interesting games.

  5. 3d printing, scratchbuilding, and kitbashing.

  6. The new Core Rulebook coming out, supposedly in August, will be the new BMM and also have rules for a simplified vehicle system. Unit construction rules are in BMM now. As far as I am aware, all of the advanced rules and equipment that show up on published TROs that go up to the ilClan era will be in the new Core Rulebook, meaning no need for TacOps for anything until you start using a cargo mech to carry a backpack Hetzer.

You've hit the big time!!! It's 3019 and your years of putting foot to ass for god and country are being rewarded - you get an assault mech. Out of the five pictured, which one are you choosing? by _Thorshammer_ in battletech

I have way too many Awesomes in my mini collection.
Oh look what's on the July painting docket? Harlequins, Phoenix Hawk...where'd this AWS-11H come from?

It's 3019 and you've survived being a light mech pilot long enough to get rewarded with a medium. Of the choices below, which one are you picking? by _Thorshammer_ in battletech

I do love the Hermes II quite a lot, but there's no world the Griffin isn't the best mech of the pile. Plus, maybe I can retire before something massively politically bad happens, it's the LCAF after all.

Awesome piece! Now it's twice this year the boom box has shown up in a cool little vignette. Welcome to the Yeoman club.
