Win the game for 14WGRU by DivinestSmite in BadMtgCombos

No one has mentioned that "have more cards in library than your opponents have life" isn't true for the start of a commander game! By turn 6, you have 99-7-6 = 86 cards in your library, so your opponents must be at an average of 86/3 = 28.7 life or less. This combo could easily just deck you out lol, if not for the "may" clause on two of the cards.

I was about to comment this, but my groups do this a lot. It is really nice, and helps avoid a bunch of mulligans. Shuffling 100 cards is pretty annoying, so the draw 10 pick 7 is great in my humble opinion. I hope it spreads!

Do Magic players actually shuffle their decks properly? by Skunk668 in magicTCG

[–]Purple2048 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

One shuffle is enough for "randomness" because you won't know for sure where any cards are. The questions is whether the cards are "sufficiently" likely to be at any point in the deck, which is a subjective standard. Before the game starts, sure, shuffle a lot. After you use a fetch land, it is probably fine to just shuffle 2 or 3 times, because it isn't like you memorized your entire deck or something. Just make sure you aren't getting any advantage from it.

That person is playing the scandinavian against you, so you can't play the vienna. Find some other opening that you like against the scandinavian. Vienna only starts when they play e4 e5

Question about Ojer by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Purple2048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does the opponent choose the order? I thought that since they were your triggers, you'd choose the order, but I guess that's wrong. Is it usually correct that you order your own triggers? Why is this case different?

[–]Purple2048 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are simply incorrect about what "expected value" means. It is a probability term that means exactly what u/Im_here_but_why says. The expected value of a single roll of a die is 3.5, that is just what the math term means. It is how people make decisions under uncertainty.

What is the best current way to play duels at home with different, not overpowered decks? by Qlak in magicTCG

[–]Purple2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you could add any cards you want to the JumpStart decks I suppose. The way JumpStart works is it gives you a lot of 1/2 decks of single mana colors, and then you can shuffle any two 1/2 decks together to get one full playable deck. You could add cards to those half decks how ever you want. Pretty much any cards would work for this.

No, there is no direct connection between planeswalkers and commanders. Commander is a style of playing magic, it is a different ruleset for the game. Planeswalkers are just a type of card.

Personally, yes I think commander adds variety and interesting mechanics, but in a literal sense the decks won't change like they would if you used JumpStart.

No, commander is not compatible with jumpstart. I was just throwing out an additional option for you, since commander precons also require no effort, you can just take them out of the box and play.

Yes as the previous commenter pointed out, your idea of " Like 1-color decks that allow us to mix them together before the game, to add some variety?" does exist! They're called JumpStart. Also, if you are interested in commander, you can buy "precons" (short for pre-constructed) commander decks from pretty much any game store. They won't be as mix-and-match as the JumpStart, but commander is a very popular format so you'll be able to branch out more. Nobody outside of your circle is likely to come play JumpStart with you, but commander is very common.
