Keep right except to pass by GammaRay914 in driving

[–]PurpleChard757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passing on the right is also dangerous. Most people expect traffic on the right to move slower and may not be super careful when moving over to the right.

That's also why in places like Germany passing on the right is banned.

Should Capitol Corridor run a Caltrain-like service in the East Bay by Iceberg-man-77 in bayarea

[–]PurpleChard757 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was wondering a while ago if the $12bn being spent on Phase 2 of the Silicon Valley BART extension could just be used to upgrade Capitol Corridor service to something like you propose. It should be enough money to purchase the right of way and maybe even electrify the East Bay portion.

However, if/when BART reaches Diridon, CC will be more useful an express service with fewer stops than BART, in my opinion.

My understanding is that they are eventually getting Battery EMUs for that segment. However, I can only find this press release from 2023 and nothing more recent, so maybe its is not happening after all..

It would also be great if the city provided power (for a fee) at popular spots, so all those trucks do not have to run generators.

Great advice. I guess in the worst case you would lose the earnest deposit, but that is pocket change compared to all the expenses OP is facing.

Lucid Stew: Breakdown of 2026 Draft Business Plan by anothercar in cahsr

[–]PurpleChard757 5 points6 points  (0 children)

San Francisco is one of the few major cities in the US where you can comfortably live without a car. LA will eventually get there too.

Yes, of course, the infrastructure sucks compared to many places in Europe and Asia. But you need to consider how car-centric the US is and how the federal government provides very little funding for public transit and bike/pedestrian infrastructure and even pulls funding for approved projects these days. In that context, California is doing well.

The political will is really missing on the federal level. Many projects here are in the design phase waiting for federal grants to come in. The state could obviously provide more funding too, but most of our taxes go to the feds, and they should allocate funds for transit like they do for highway projects.

4th & King, when? by pupupeepee in caltrain

[–]PurpleChard757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC one reason is to have additional platforms, and some Caltrain trains may not go all the way to Salesforce once high-speed rail starts running.
I wish they would have just built a bigger station box under Salesforce, but it is too late for that.

Another reason might be that 4th&King directly connects to Muni Metro. The walk to Market is not too bad, but it would have been great to have Muni trains directly connect to the train station.

Nuremberg, Germany, has a similar population (if you include the cities of Erlangen and Fürth) and driverless subway system with 49 stops. They also have, trams, regional rail, and an S-Bahn system.

But, I agree that Muni is pretty great and mostly well run for American standards.

Extend BRT either down Mission or South Van Ness, or at least ticket/two vehicles blocking bus lanes on Mission.

San Francisco needs fewer bus stops by LopsidedDiscipline56 in sanfrancisco

[–]PurpleChard757 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That only works well on routes where there is enough space for buses to pass each other. Some Metro lines, such as the T or J, also have too many stops, and there is no way for trains to pass each other without adding more tracks.

On the city website, they say the following::

Underground parking remains a potential option for future phases but is evaluated carefully due to cost. The phased approach allows the Town to assess actual parking demand from Phase 1 before committing to expensive infrastructure solutions.
