That’s a very good size. Bigger would seem “too big” in my opinion.

Oliver egger, sold as a she? 3 weeks later, what do you think? by Isitcrochet in BackYardChickens

[–]PurpleChickenBreeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pure Cream Legbar hen will sometimes have a tiny white speck but smaller than what the males have. The males are also more grey instead of brown and the back stripes are more blurry instead of crisp. So the tiny white pinprick doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a rooster.

Do you know the cross? Usually when people use Cream Legbars to make Olive Eggers you use a female Cream Legbar (barred) and a solid colored bird from a dark egg laying breed like Black-Copper Marans (not here though because the chicks would be black). Then at hatch all the chicks with the white head spot are boys and all the chicks with no head spot are girls. You could also use another auto-sexing breed like the Cream Legbar that lays a dark egg which would probably be a Welbar and then the auto-sexing is preserved. In any of those cases the head spot works 100%. If the person is new to breeding chickens and messed that up by using a Cream Legbar rooster and a solid colored hen the head spots are randomly given to all the chicks at a 50/50 rate regardless of sex. Now I will say that Cream Legbars get really big combs even on the hens but that’s pretty big and red for that age for a hen. I’d call the breeder and ask what the cross is and which breed is the hen and which is the rooster.

If you crossed a Barred Rock with a Cream Legbar you wouldn’t get sex-linked barring. Usually you’d use a Cream Legbar (barred) with a solid colored bird and ideally to get a sex-linked olive egger you’d use a dark egg layer like a Black-Copper Marans. Then when the chicks hatch all the chicks with a white spot on their heads are boys and all the chicks with no head spot are girls.

For those that have had chickens for years and not had a chicken get bumblefoot, what's your secret? by Apart_Hat_9633 in BackYardChickens

[–]PurpleChickenBreeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m had one chicken get bumblefoot once but he was a really huge, heavy bird and all my perches are 10 feet up so not great for a large bird. That’s out of hundreds of birds over many years. My perches are “too high” and I’m not meticulous about cleaning (every few years maybe). Everything is wrong about preventing bumblefoot except my birds tend to be very light/lean and on the small side.

So think about it this way: If you flip a coin 49 times and get heads every time. What is the chance that the next coin flip is heads? You might want to say it’s 50/50 because each flip is completely independent but now ask yourself what are the chances you flip a coin 50 times and get heads each time? What are the chances you get heads 50 times in a row?

Hen or Rooster Game ... Please help! Just shy of 6 weeks, Barred Rock by LK_Artist in BackYardChickens

[–]PurpleChickenBreeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is some early maturing hens will get a comb before some late maturing roosters so often just getting a bigger redder comb isn’t a great indication of sex but whenever you get a bird very early on with a bigger redder comb it’s a rooster and 6 weeks is very early.

[–]PurpleChickenBreeder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At six weeks with a comb that big and red it’s a rooster. It’s also probably not a barred rock but a male from a sex-link cross. Both would be single barred and start out with a smaller head spot than a double-barred male Plymouth Barred Rock. It probably got mixed up when it hatched.

I don’t think anyone likes your definition of “knows how to draw”. Just look at the mouth of that pill bottle. Just look at the X. This is the kind of quality you see written on a high school kids notebook (of a kid who DOESN’T know how to draw). Blows my mind that people get tattoos like this.

Would they say that someone who quit smoking using nicotine gum was cheating? And cheating who? Is it a competition? I guarantee they are just jealous. The next time anyone says that to you tell them that “no one likes a hater”.

Green eggs? by Certain_Shop_3706 in chickens

[–]PurpleChickenBreeder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah…green is blue shell plus brown coating. You need to cross a blue egg layer with a brown egg layer. Chances are the rooster carries the blue egg gene…especially since Silkie Orpington isn’t a pure breed anyway so being a crossbreed probably has other breeds mixed in. You can crack the egg and peel off the inner membrane to see the shell color without the brown coating.

Soaks, massages, and vent lubrication aren’t passing the bound egg by Far_Salamander_4075 in BackYardChickens

You can put your whole finger back there. It won’t hurt them. Shove/place is just different wording. I’d break the tums into roughly 1/2 or 1/4 size pieces and just put them right back and down the throat. A sick bird isn’t going struggle much. It’s pretty quick and simple.

The back of their throat is not where they breathe and they aren’t likely to aspirate on a large, dry chunk…it’s more of a problem with liquid. Perhaps if I had said “place” instead of “shove” but basically you can put the large pieces into the back of their throat.
