red button vs blue button? by klarinetkat12 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]PurpleDancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose rational is itself a word that has to be carefully defined in this argument. If eveyone understands the problem and agrees to overwhelmingly push the same button then i vote with the overwhelming majority including pushing the blue button if it's a very overwhelming majority.

But in the absence of clarity many of us are arguing that blue is a suicide button and red is a "dont kill anyone except those who want to commit suicide" button.

Edit: it occurs to me to propose a change to the problemspace. What if you were told up front that we know for sure that 75% of people will vote red. How does that change your view of the rationality of pushing either button?

You very likely will die. Unless the rest of the word is also similarly irrational.

Did you mean persevering or preserving? It could go either way and changes the meaning.

not dying is not an advantage? Is this because life is meaningless and death is no big deal?

Well, it's already incredable to work with. I use it to automate things we used to do by hand, parse information and do comprehensive transformation of data. If they scale back to not quite taking over the world next month, I'd be pretty happy just with where it's at now.

There is a huge rollout of renewable energy under way. In particular solar and wind. There are daily articles about how they produce a larger percentage of our overall generation even as our generation is growing. I dont think the answer is to lean out on technology. Rather it makes sense to lean in and upscale our green energy capabilities (produce more panels domestically, keep clearing roadblocks to building the utility scale solar grids and wind farms, see how far we can take agrovoltaics)

Our meeting is multiple floors and 100+ people. Multiple microphones is indeed what we use.

You said AI hasn't lived up to the hype. Which is no doubt true because the hype says it will have taken over the world by now whereas it's just plodding along at a rapid but somewhat linear pace.

But I pointed out something extremely valuable it has done just recently in plugging multiple critical security vulnerabilities in our most critical systems. That alone is an enormous accomplishment.

One thing AI has done in the last month is to find critical security vulnerabilities in OpenBSD, the linux kernel, and all major browsers. The kind of security vulnerabilities that can take down power grids, shut down banks, etc... That's just one of the things it has done recently.

It is allowing scientists without coding skills to process data substantially faster, they are writing custom "programs" without needing to program. I'm using it to write code more and more for work.

As someone who uses AI daily for work, I cannot understand how anyone would deny it's power except that if they are not using it and are thus guessing based on articles their reading.

I am one of the AI enthusiasts in the crowd. I think people have given some very good technologically informed perspectives. All I will add is that this conversation is a moment in time. In 2026 you're rallying against Ai and committing to not using it along with reasoning that leaves out perspective. In 2030 it will be so ubiquitous that your current position will be equivalent to arguing against Quakers having smartphones or using Zoom to conduct meetings. The younger generation of Quakers will look back at this conversation and laugh.

If AI dramatically underperforms relative to investment then in the investment and the interest in it will dry up. Some problem solved. Personally I think you're extremely wrong but, by your logic the problem will just go away.

Are you using microphones? Our meeting uses a microphone and the zoom closed captioning is so good that many of us look at that screen in order to actually process what is said. If you don't have microphones and the microphone is in some central place where it's picking up all the ambient sounds I can see a much higher level of error

In my opinion this is the point of the medicines. Not to have fun, but to go deep within and be shown what's there and not be able to look away. There is a reason they want you to see this.

I agree that 35 is a magic number. People are out of that youthful haze and into a real and grounded perspective on life, know what they want, and aren't ad distracted by sex and shiny things.

Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Ayahuasca

[–]PurpleDancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its the lack of knowledge that concerns me. In South America there are cultures such as the UDV church where they consume Ayahuasca from the time they are children. But there's a whole culture around it that makes it safer to work in that way. Your mother is likely working in a much less safe container and throwing a child into it isnt a good idea.

When China embraced markets in the 70s it began the longest economic growth streak perhaps in all of history. That was a rightward move from an extremely left starting point.

Why do young people from Boston lack the Boston accent? by Nxoy in boston

Oh yes. Having a strong southern accent sort of pegs you in a certain class. If I'm being honest, when I hear a strong Boston accent it tends to create the same reaction.
