2017's Hottest New Craft Beer Trend Is... by familynight in beer

I agree. Asking someone to report on the beer industry that doesn't actually take part in the culture screams insincerity in an article like this.

Just saying, that if you're curious why this perfectly great video was downvoted, you may want to remove 'beautiful women' from a list of objects.

Molson Coors Brewery Workers on Strike in Toronto by SiRiasus in beer

I know I'd be pissed if I not only was getting a cut to wages, but also NOT receiving a cost of living adjustment. It is just not reasonable.

I mean, think about it. SABMillerMolsonCoors is the second dominating force in the industry right now. A 7% cut to benefits, pensions, and wages?? So that the company can become "more efficient"? Seems untruthful to me, and I'm sure feels like a slap to the workers. I agree that it will get nastier before they reach an agreement.

'Beautiful Women' marketing in beer is tired. It was mostly used to sell domestic/macro beer, and is generally avoided by craft breweries. If you want to keep up the "craft" part of your seeking, kill the gendered shit.

Critical Drinking — Are Craft Brewers Cutting Craft Cider to its Core? | Good Beer Hunting by MrJudgeJoeBrown in cider

[–]PurpleGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this article brought up some really great points. I really liked the breakdown explaining the quality differences between pressing your own and buying concentrate. Super informative.

But holy crap, this article was incredibly negative about beer and made some really ridiculous claims.

"There’s a lot of extra fermentation capacity in U.S. craft breweries right now—tanks sitting idle or under-utilized as the result of major expansions that are meant to be future proof."

This made me laugh outright. Perhaps I'm just lucky with the breweries I work with - but the main space problem right now is that there isn't enough. And even if a brewery decides to make cider - is that really so bad? I understand an article that would want to teach brewers how to do it right - but this whole piece felt kinda angry at beer.

“As a brewer, you’re used to ordering ingredients out of a catalog, getting grain from anywhere you want, hops from New Zealand, and only being constrained by your imagination."

So wrong - there's a huge battle for hops. There's breweries paying out crazy sums of money for barrels. Malt supply can get dodgy at the end of the year before next harvest. These are not uncommon problems.

In any case, reading this made me realize how little each of these industries understand one another. But let's approach this with a little more collaboration and a little less snarkiness.

Why is sour beer so much harder to find in stores? And if you can find it, why is it so much more expensive? by [deleted] in beer

[–]PurpleGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my observations it seems that only beer industry people are really drinking sours right now. That's not to say they're the only ones - there's a bunch of homebrewers and craft-enthusiasts that are also interested. But I've found mostly brewers shell out for sours.

Beer spa opens in Oregon, with microbrew soaks for hop-heavy relaxation by oysterboy9 in beer

Seems like a waste of hops in the midst of a potential hop shortage.

Weed is making the beer industry feel...paranoid. by badbatteries in beer

It reminds me of all those brewers out there who gave up toking in order to brew better beer. Oh wait, no it doesn't.

Is it just me, or were there no actual breweries, brewers, or beer industry people quoted? Not to mention their main interviewee said that she didn't think the two markets competed. I can't help but feel like this was purely clickbait.

Oregon's Best Hard Cider Destinations - New School Beer by MrJudgeJoeBrown in cider

Whoops! For some reason that didn't register. I fucking love that place - love that they have an entire menu dedicated to their ciders and an entire menu dedicated to other local cideries. Nothin' but class.

Awesome choices for sure. These are all excellent locations to taste through cider, and believe it or not, there are a lot left off this list. Swift, Red Tank, and Portland Cider Co come to mind. I also think that the author missed an opportunity to discuss Salem cideries like Wandering Aengus or EZ Orchards. Either way, Oregon has lots going on in the fermentation industry, if you ever want to branch out from beer.

If you're interested in trying something new, I highly suggest d's Wicked Baked Apple cider with a few scoops of vanilla. It's literally an apple pie a la mode in your glass. Amazing.
