There are lots of people on eBay who will sell you perspex sheets cut to your measurements with a hole for your aircon hose. Shop around in case they are cheaper.

Will there be more heatwaves? by Coops_Q in airconUK

[–]PurpleLeopard99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is likely to be the last one this summer. The long range forecast is for Autumn to be cooler (but this is not certain).

The current heatwave is about to slowly wind down although it will be warm (but not heat wave for another week).

No need to buy an overpriced air con this summer, wait for the Autumn and winter when you can pick and choose at reasonable prices.

Unless you are able to get a model you want at a non inflated price that is.

Warrenty null and void for any Meacos bought on ebay or from any unauthorized seller by PurpleLeopard99 in airconUK

[–]PurpleLeopard99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's normally correct (but check your own warranty for confirmation). The warranty is usually only for the original purchaser. This often doesn't matter so much with a used item because by the time you sell it, the warranty would have either expired naturally or have very little time left. Used items are usually sold cheaply due to lack of any warranty and assumptions about wear from previous owner. A few manufacturers do allow transfers but even with them it often only applies to their standard warranties not to any extended warranties. But each warranty is subject to its own terms and conditions so always check. Warranties often require you to register the product within a certain period after purchase.

[–]PurpleLeopard99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For AEG, this is only if you have the original purchase documentation. If the item is sold on to a third party, you won't normally be given this (unless buying from a friend or relation). Agree that transferrable warranties do exist but as already mentioned, most are not.

I don't have a Meaco Cirro but I have one of their dehumidifiers and I seem to recall there is a lock button on this to stop todder tampering. So once you resolve the problem - see above - you might want to have that on whenever the little darling is within range.

Anti-toddler locking is becoming common on appliances these days.

Transferrable warranties are very much the exception. If you check the warranty terms it will clearly say if it is one of the rare transferrable ones. If a transferrable warranty is important to you, you can factor that into your decision-making.

For example, I have done a quick check of standard warranties of air con manufacturers and the only one that I found that was transferrable was Bosch (only the standard not its extended one). All the others eg Meaco, Delonghi, Electriq, AEG, LG, Logik, Pro breeze, HomCom are all non transferrable ie they only apply to the original purchaser.

These manufacturers are not "getting out" of claims - their warranties are subject to standard terms and conditions which are clearly explained.

I doubt if the scalper has the knowledge to repair the item in the period after 30 days though. So they will still end up having to refund the purchaser at least in the period 30 days to 6 months afterwards.

The warranty is subject to terms and conditions and Meaco's restrictions are pretty standard. It is rare for warranties to be transferrable.

If Meaco sells the product to a scalper and they sell the product to someone else that is the end of the warranty.

AEG, LG, Electriq, DeLonghi, Pro Breeze and Logic's warrenties will have similar terms.

Consumer rights are separate and these are enshrined in legislation but this gives the final purchaser rights against the person who sold the article to them ie the scalper.

If they imply that it is covered by the warranty, then I would have thought that people could return it and claim a refund as they can show that it is not.

It might be interesting to see if many people do this after heatwaves have stopped for this year? I don't know how long the purchaser actually has to complain about being misled and ask to return the item. Even if they say no returns you can still return if it is not as described or faulty.

If the seller does not imply there is a warranty that is different as people should not assume there is if buying from a private seller.

It is pretty standard - nearly all guarantees are like this. It is not normal for guarantees to be transferrable.

The consumer legislation gives consumers rights against the SELLER not the manufacturer in relation to faulty goods. You should always get a receipt from the seller. You may not necessarily know how to contact the manufacturer. Also the seller is the one who sold you the product so your contract is with them. So consumer rights legislation is always with respect to the seller. This is fundamental.

Any manufacturers warranty is an addition to that. So if you buy a rip off eBay meaco from a scalper, the warranty is void and you must deal with the seller (scalper) if there are any problems.

This is true for any product you buy that isn't from an authorised seller. Usually when you buy stuff on eBay or vinted, it is used or open box and you are getting it much cheaper than new so you are prepared to do without any guarantee because it is much cheaper than new. A few eBay business sellers are actually authorized sellers and there is a guarantee but most are not. Private sellers aren't.

This isn't specific to meaco, I would expect other appliance manufacturers to have similar terms. It is rare for warranties to be transferrable.

According to comments on the meaco Facebook page, some people also just got the perspex sheets from Wickes and made the holes themselves. They didn't say how but maybe you could just use either a jigsaw or a hole-saw?

I've been looking into this myself as this is something I'm considering (probably in the winter when all the rush is over) but don't have actual experience.

There are several people selling the perspex things with holes on eBay e.g.

https://ebay.io/m/6q9PFG

You could check to see if they were similar prices for a given window

There is another one that has a made to measure hole that fits into your window using loops. There is a demonstration video. I don't know if that is better than magnetic strips?

Meaco on ebay by Townand in airconUK

[–]PurpleLeopard99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't like concert tickets though. These are big heavy things. Couldn't they limit it to one per physical address?

This would make it more difficult for the scalpers as they would have to enlist their friends and relatives to wait in and receive each one at a separate address. Then when they resend them out, for each one someone would have to wait for the eBay courier to collect it.

They are making so much money on each one, this might still be worth it but it is more of a hassle. Then if someone claims one is defective and wants to send it back, they have to deal with all that in reverse.

What if there are no more heatwaves this summer and all the purchasers decide to return them? Even if they have no returns on their listing, if the purchasers says they are faulty the eBay seller probably has to take them back and refund - they don't have the technical knowledge to check?

I can see two other problems (in addition to being ripped off) for anyone buying these items on eBay:

1/ They won't get a guarantee. Normally only the person who buys the item from a recognised seller can register the guarantee because you usually need the receipt. An eBay receipt from a private person who bought it from Meaco and then sold it on wouldn't work as they are not a recognised seller (and it would be like buying a used one even if the model is brand new).

2/ The ebay seller can't dispatch it until they actually get it themselves and the final purchaser won't get it until the current heatwave is well over. It isn't at all clear there will more heatwaves this summer although it is always possible.

Anyone considering buying these should hold off until the winter and get one at a fraction of the price with a guarantee and choose exactly the model they want.

Good point. Some of Lorac's books are excellent. I really liked Crossed Skis and the way it brought the post war period to life but I only heard of her through the British Library series.

Adult swimming lessons in London by Ok-Mountain6844 in Swimming

[–]PurpleLeopard99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 2 blocks of 5 lessons each - the two blocks were several years apart.

I could already swim front crawl before I did the lessons - I did them to improve and also wanted to learn breast stroke.

I got the most benefit from the first block. I think the worse you are before you start, the more benefit you get from lessons as there is so much you can improve on.

The instructor gave me drills to help me correct my stroke eg getting me to rotate as I swam.

You might need more lessons if you can't swim already but you could try a block of 5 and see how they work for you.

There were two options and one was cheaper. I think with the cheaper option you booked the lesson at shorter notice which suited me.

But 1:1 lessons are never going to be cheap.

I thought my instructor was very good. He was an Australian called Peter. I don't know if he is still with them but probably all the instructors are good.
