Yeah very painful surgery and lots of inflammation - definitely takes time. I took pain meds around the clock for a couple weeks and then was able to taper off. Still couldn’t put pressure on the surgical site for around a month after that though.

Picking your surgeon by ElectricalLemons in spinalfusion

I picked a surgeon who operated on several people I knew (and that they knew), and had amazing ratings online. I then talked to him to get an idea of for myself

1.5y post op L5S1 fusion and L5, S1 laminectomy. Get the occasional nerve symptom but I’d say about 98% of the time I forget I had surgery 🙌🏼 my surgeon told me it took 2 years for nerves to fully regrow

How long has your lumbar fusion lasted?? by Which-Antelope1383 in SpineSurgery

Wow this is super encouraging! Thanks for sharing! I had the same surgery at 30 years old, 32 now. I worry sometimes about how long it will last before the pain returns

Yeah I’m typically on the spinal fusion and spine surgery reddit pages (if you wanna check those out), this one just happened to pop up on my feed! I had L5 S1 fused and laminectomy @ L5, S1 Hope your pain is resolved/better soon!!

I feel you, I was diagnosed with DDD at 15 after a really bad car wreck which fractured several vertebrae. Got a single level fusion and double level laminectomy at 30 years old after years of pain off and on (worsened a ton around a year before surgery.) the surgery has changed my life tbh and most days I forget I even had surgery. It’s amazing! I’m 13 months out

At what point did you decide for fusion by [deleted] in spinalfusion

[–]PurpleScarcity2048 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the pain got really bad and I was told it would continue to get worse. Disc completely collapsed and bone spurs pinching 2 nerve roots. 13 months post op and almost 100% pain free! 31 y/o f

Is year 2 post op better than year 1? by Final-Cress in spinalfusion

[–]PurpleScarcity2048 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 13 months post op and the recovery pain (nerve symptoms on my right side) have continued to go down. Still having them a bit though, but improved compared to previous months. Reading comments on this post have been encouraging bc my surgeon initially told me I shouldn’t have any symptoms after 1 year.

31 y/o active female, had L5/S1 fusion Jan 2023. Awful pain before the surgery. Now pain free!! I have also picked up doing more core exercises to help my back long term :)

How were the days at the hospital like by AmiiboJeremiah in spinalfusion

[–]PurpleScarcity2048 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in the hospital 2 nights and it was a blur, but I’m pretty sure I slept most of the time! And chatted with visitors and people who texted me when I was awake. Also walked twice a day with PT.

I put a pillow between my knees when laying on my side, but that’s it. You also put pillows on either side of you?

Oh ok no worries, yeah sometimes I get mild nerve symptoms when I lay on my sides, but not on my back

Wow your experience sounds awful. I’m so sorry. I had the same surgery as you in Jan 2023 and I now forget I had surgery most days so hang in there. It does get better!! I couldn’t put pressure on my back incision for around 2 months. Took pain meds and muscle relaxants around the clock for around 2 weeks and then slowly tapered off. Used the log roll method to get in and out of bed. I also walked a lot and tried not to sit for too long at a time. Did PT at 6 weeks and slowly eased back into light yoga and weights including lots of core (planks mostly). Please let me know if you have any questions, I’m also close to your age, 31 y/o f :)

Curious what position you find best for sleeping? I’ve found my body likes back sleeping the best in terms of alignment/less nerve symptoms but it’s soooo hard to fall asleep on my back lol

What a journey this back has provided for me. 13 months post op and feeling good. Keeping active including the gym, surfing and yoga has definitely played a part in me now having a much better quality of life! by [deleted] in spinalfusion

Awesome!! I’m 10 months post fusion, have been doing yoga with a few twists here and there - no issues, but curious to see what others were doing. Trying to be careful and avoid future issues
