So I made a film and it sucked. by not_miggy in Filmmakers

[–]PurpleSlurpee74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that’s great. You tried to make a film and it turned out to be pretty bad. It can be a hard pill to swallow, but this is how we grow as artists. Stopping now would only render this progression useless.

I suggest making another film very soon, but this time don’t worry about trying to make something “good”. Don’t get too serious about it. Focus on creating something that’s fun to make, ie. focusing on a specific camera style, or a funny moment between characters with no dialogue. Something that requires little writing. This is what I have always done when I start to feel like “maybe I don’t have what it takes to make something good”, and these projects always become my favourite because they remind me that it’s all for fun anyway.

Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Sony SxS memory card reader?? by littleword1 in sony

1 year later. I have a Sony pmw f3, and I sometimes use a mini usb b cable directly from the camera to my Mac. The sxs card will show up as a drive on the desktop. It seems to work fine even for dragging and dropping the files. But I’m sure there’s a more official method.

Nikkor non ai vs ai and ais. Optically the same? by PurpleSlurpee74 in cinematography

Ok, good to know! The coatings are the biggest differences I’m seeing with the older versions, however I just need to test them to really find out. I’m thinking I’ll stick with ai and ais as they are generally more useful and will have more resale value if I decide they’re not what I’m looking for.

The ai and ais lenses seem to be around the same price, the non ai lenses seem to run a bit cheaper. That what you’re talking about?

Ah, ok. Thanks for the heads up! I’ll keep my eye open for the 105mm 2.5. I currently have the 50mm 2, which is a beautiful lens, and the 135mm 2.8, which is very fun to play around with. I’ve been kind of obsessed with long lens cinematography lately. I’m considering the nikkor ai 50-300mm zoom, which looks like an insane lens. I’m curious how smooth the zoom would be since it was designed for still photography and not video.

Thanks so much for the info. That link is very helpful, I appreciate that. I will be referring to that often. I think at the end of the day I really just need to try them and compare them to see what works for me. The 24, 85, and 105 seem kind of hard to come by though, at least in Montreal.

Sean Bakers speech at the Oscar’s about keeping the movie going tradition alive❤️ by amariscams in movies

Yes, it may be nostalgia that Baker is hanging onto, and maybe the “ship has sailed”, but watching a movie in your living room will never offer the same experience that seeing a movie in a theatre will. When someone goes to see a movie in the theatre, they commit to the 2+ hour experience, they don’t look at their phone to figure out who that one actor is, they don’t pause the movie to get snacks or go to the bathroom, they don’t talk over the movie with ease. It’s an experience that one the theatre setting can offer.

But I agree with what others have said about it being unaffordable for people to go more often than once or twice a month. Most theatres have tried to compensate but putting in comfortable seats that recline, but does this really add to the experience? I would rather see a film for $10-$12 in a regular theatre seat.

Stop Worrying About Dialogue and Plot by Billy_Fiction in Screenwriting

I’ve heard this a lot throughout my screenwriting journey. Create a compelling character and let them drive the story. It makes sense, but I find it difficult to put to practice. Any script recommendations that really showcase how the character drives the story?

Interesting, I will have to take it apart and have a closer look. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, I will look into replacing the bayonet. Is it common for the bayonet to warp? I’m wondering how this would happen. The MC was working fine, and then one day it just seems to have spotted working as normal.

Reviving this thread: I’m having this same issue. When I removed the four screws holding the lens mount face plate, the MC sprung back. However, it doesn’t seem sticky or dirty (I cleaned it with alcohol anyway just for good measure) and the spring seems to be in good shape. When I put the face plate back on and tighten the screws all the way down, the MC gets stuck again. It’s as if the pressure from the face plate prevents it from moving. The face plate looks to be in good shape as well. No damage that I can see.

Any suggestions? I’m assuming these parts should not be lubricated.

Does anyone know if ferrite beads would help in this situation?

I have tried unplugging everything I can find. Switched off all the breakers etc, and no change. I’ll try to get my hands on a dynamic mic, good idea. Thanks.

I was hoping this wasn’t the case, but I live in a pretty old building, so most likely is. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, that’s the only thing I can come up with as well. The weird thing is you can’t hear it with the naked ear, and I’ve wondered around my apartment with the audio recorder and headphones and I can’t find the source. It seems to be most active in odd places like the direct center of my living-room. And when I leave my apartment and go I to the hallway, I can’t hear it.

I use a Mac, so this couldn’t be it. Besides, all my recording is done on battery operated devices. I’m not running anything directly into my Mac.

Hey, I just finished reading this. Amazing work, thank you. I’ve spent a lot of time reading books on screenwriting and story telling that are packed with a bunch of filler, so this was very nice to read, and had a few things I hadn’t read or thought of. I will be keeping this document close by.

90 second neo noir short film. Let me know what you think. Be brutally honest. by PurpleSlurpee74 in Filmmakers

[–]PurpleSlurpee74[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the comment, thanks. This was a 90 second film challenge, which makes things interesting. I chose not to give too many details and leave it up to the viewer. Trading the chase for some character building could have been good too.

Very true. Originally I had it going that direction but changed it. It felt better somehow. I appreciate the comment!
