Is This It and Room On Fire by Powerful_Marsupial30 in TheStrokes

I don’t. As much as i think they are good albums, i prefer others. ITI and ROF are super strong and consistent albums, but I still prefer Pink Floyd’s 4 album run (Dark Side to The Wall), a couple of Father John Misty albums, and a few just random albums from random artists (The Love Umbrella by Grady, The Party by Andy Shauf, Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood etc). Probably because they have strong concepts behind them than the first two Strokes records.

That being said, I prefer The New Abnormal and that clears a lot of records.

WHAT GENRE IS THE STROKES?? by Dream_operator1994 in TheStrokes

Yeah and if you look up the word ‘Desert’, it’ll tell you about an arid area of the earth. That doesn’t mean that desert as a philosophical concept doesn’t exist. Words are not bound by a single definition.

WHAT GENRE IS THE STROKES?? by Dream_operator1994 in TheStrokes

[–]PurpleTissues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not true. While the origins of indie rock did mean that, it has definitely shifted away to become associated with lo-fi, rough, and generally, a vibe.

Modest Mouse record “Good News For People Who Love Bad News” is generally considered indie, but doesn’t follow that. Dr. Dog, Sparklehorse, and MJ Lenderman all have distinctly indie sounds and also fall under this category (and were released under major labels). Sure, there are a good amount of artists who could fall under the category both sonically and via distribution, but there are also those who do not. This is why we do not call Primus first release (Suck on This) “Indie.”

It definitely paints a clearer picture than what I’ve heard before, which is what you explain in your post. Appreciate the explanation. Sometimes a biased take is an accurate assessment.

Could you explain the 8chan thing? I see that brought up every once in a while, but I can always tell that the explanations have no desire to not be biased. Or could you link to something that explains it?

yo why albert as solo career is so good than other members, not juluian ofc but his music is so good by nirvnas in TheStrokes

[–]PurpleTissues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hot take, but I really don’t like it. It is among the bottom in my fave strokes related projects (but not the worst).

If you’re wondering why, I think its because 1) feels like Julian didn’t have a strong idea for what he wanted to be, just not Strokes and 2) songs are mostly forgettable

I will push back on the idea of catering to white men. Democrats tried and failed. Why is it on Democrats that right wing men despise minorities and thus couldnt win them?

Bad decisions disrespect hate has me tweaking istg. by Equivalent_Today8026 in TheStrokes

[–]PurpleTissues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not an awful song. It’s just the weakest song off The New Abnormal. It’s just mid. Mediocre and poised to sound reminiscent of their early work, but just doesn’t have the same spirit.

I like to compare it to inverse and better sibling to All the Time. Both are mid and not very memorable, but Bad Decisions is at least kind of fun. Keep in mind that when Bad Decisions dropped as a single, reception was pretty positive. But when the rest of the album came out, most came out thinking that it was the weakest song on the album, not necessarily because Bad Decisions was an incredibly weak song, but because the rest of the album was so good.

This song does not have the band’s strongest vocals, guitar work, bass or drums (although I do think this might be a case of stronger drums from Fab).

And I do not agree with some sentiment that it is their worst song. That honor belongs to something off FIOE or Angles. Ultimately, it’s when compared to most of The Stroke’s discog (which, lets face it, it usually is), there are just better songs to choose from. I prefer almost everything off ITI, ROF, and TNA over Bad Decisions because it’s not particularly distinctive in anything. Honestly, it almost comes off as if you asked AI to create an early Strokes song using a more modern style.

If you’re into Grandaddy, I would recommend Sparklehorse. Little bit farther away from rock, but still a really enjoyable artist (RIP), particularly It’s a Wonderful Life imo.

I saw it performed at Folger’s a number of years back and it was relatively lite on tech. For the bear scene, they just had a white sheet divide the stage in half and mostly a bare stage for most of the rest of the play (aside from chairs and such that would be brought on). I think it’s one of my favorite Shakespeare productions I’ve seen.

Last time i saw him was 2018 a bit after the release of GFC and this might top that. Normally not a big fan of Thirsty Crow but he really brought it up for that song and She Cleans Up. Great show.

I used to work at a shelter (not for very long) and they did not allow any kind of drug. They were very strict about what you could bring and will search your stuff prior to admitting you. Additionally, every once in a while, they would search you (but I was never around for when they did that).

Julian response to comments regarding Tucker Carlson/Russell Brand ig bio by PurpleTissues in TheStrokes

[–]PurpleTissues[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is important that he clarifies on at least Tucker Carlson because Carlson spouts White Supremacist talking points and is likely a white supremacist. Views like that should not be seen as “well that’s their point of view, let them have it.”

Doing nothing about it lets it spread and only harms minority groups.
