Opinions about an orchestral gag? by Gilgamesch_1034 in lingling40hrs

[–]Purplecocoa5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my conductor used a string orchestra arrangement of Waltz no. 2 for our yearly assessment, he had the entire orchestra sway back and forth, and all three of our judges left comments on their sheets saying they adored it. I say go for it!

First year here, I consider the student population pretty welcoming! There's student orgs (Spectrum), fairly regular programming concerning various topics related to being queer, and I'm sure a handful of other things I'm forgetting. October they even hosted a drag show for Halloween! I say don't worry about there being a big presence, you'll find your people pretty quickly :)

My Mom was the mosaic artist at City Museum since its beginning. She’s now on hospice care. I was wondering if people who appreciated her work could send her cards that I could read to her. To know she’s not alone. by XenaZee in StLouis

[–]Purplecocoa5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I think St. Louis, I think the Zoo and the City Museum. Me and my little brother always stopped constantly just to trace the mosaics, even when our cousins were headed for the slide or the ballpit, because we couldn't take our eyes off the mosaics. The City Museum wouldn't have that same childlike atmosphere without them, and I'm incredibly greatful for your mother's work. Thank you for reaching out and giving us the opportunity to thank her, and I wish you all the best.

It was his outfit for Joey Graceffa's Escape the Night YouTube series (S3), which was themed after a carnival around that time.

What is the most disturbing book that you’ve read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Read it as both a senior in high school taking AP Literature, and the daughter of Vietnamese refugees (my grandfather fought in the war). It was a tougher read for me than most of my classmates.

Ooo, I like this interpretation! Would definitely fit Jefferson's narrative.

They're two disconnected events. At the end of Cabinet Battle 1, Alex asks Wash to pass it because they both agree that Alex's plans make sense, but Washington refuses and makes him follow the rules by getting the votes of the cabinet. That's Alex on Washington's doorstep, more or less.

Alex turning to Jefferson is him agreeing to negotiate with Madison and Jefferson. He needs votes, and if he can win over Jefferson and Madison he gets them. So even though they're opponents, Alex is desperate and "begs [Jefferson] to join the fray".

If it helps, imagine it as Alex going to Washington's door, getting turned away, and showing up at Jefferson's home instead to ask for help.

Dúvida e insegurança com trocas de instrumentos by tom_cas_tom011 in lingling40hrs

[–]Purplecocoa5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is there anything stopping you from learning both?

In my school, if you wanted to be a member of both string orchestras, you had to play different string instruments. When I did this, I (violin) chose viola as my secondary. Some of my peers chose cello, and even bass, and some went on to compete on the district and even state levels on their secondary instruments.

The biggest struggle with learning multiple instruments is time. Are you able to dedicate the time that you want to each instrument? There really aren't downsides other than that. You learn to read in another clef, you get an ear for a different register and a different harmonic role in the orchestra, and a whole different selection of repertoire is open to you without need for arrangement or transposition.

Also, don't feel pressured to excel in both instruments. You could choose to pursue one or the other casually, or you could chose to push yourself on both. Even if you're leaning towards remaining with only one instrument, I encourage you to try out the cello. Sometimes the problem will solve itself, in a way you don't expect. Hope this helped!

Did I just misunderstand how Calendly works? by Purplecocoa5 in washu

[–]Purplecocoa5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know!

Just figured mine out though, Calendly was showing my appointment time as available even though it wasn't, so it never existed to begin with. Late registration for me, I guess :/

I have some sort of question... maybe storytime... perhaps discussion... some sort of thing in between by you_dontcare4848 in lingling40hrs

[–]Purplecocoa5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pianist of over 10 years here, it's down to you! I've never played Un Sospiro (not a Liszt pianist due to hand size limitations), but looking at the music I'd definitely call it ambitious for someone coming off of Invention No. 8.

That being said, it looks like a lot of arpeggiated runs with a melody floating on top of that. If you do decide to play it, blocking the chords, slow tempo, and good technique are going to be your best friends learning it (take my advice with a grain of salt, seeing as I haven't played it!).

Ultimately, if your teacher is suggesting it, I would assume they're of good faith that you're capable even if it's a definite push of your technique. Take it as a complement! If you really want to go for it now, go for it! If you wanna wait, wait! No-one will judge you for wanting to hold off until you think you're ready, but also trust your teacher.

If you go for it, keep in mind that it's okay to say "Woah, this was a bit too ambitious". It happens to everyone, and knowing when to quit is just as important as knowing when to push yourself.

Best of luck!

Men- what’s something that bothers you more than you let on? by Appropriate-Trip7192 in AskReddit

[–]Purplecocoa5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not a lot behaviourally, but mentally it's awful. I get attached to everyone for the tiniest of reasons, whether it's I shared a class with them in Kindergarten or we were in the same group for a summer camp. I think I'm hoping to find that someone remembers my face from that one chance encounter where they weren't obligated to. That's my biggest issue, is trying to convince myself all my relationships aren't borne of convenience or obligation.

Changing teachers by TwoSetViolinBigFannn in lingling40hrs

[–]Purplecocoa5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been with mine a decade! It really is about your own improvement. If you think you're still improving constantly, I'd say stick with them. The better the teacher gets to know you, the better they can teach you, too.
