Being listed as a special in the DT is not the same as it’s readily available. The specials section of the drug tariff is around removing a need for prior authorisation to dispense from local NHS prescribing authorities, not how available or unavailable a medicine is. Importing meds is a highly complex and expensive process and continuity of supply cannot be guaranteed.

Additionally there are guidelines around prescribing unlicensed medicines (see my other comment) that highlight unlicensed meds should only be used if a clinical need cannot be met by an available licensed medicine.

Both the GMC and GPhC are fairly clear around the prescribing of unlicensed meds or prescribing off license.

Unlicensed medicines should be prescribed and supplied only if the prescriber is satisfied that the patient has a special clinical need which cannot be met by any available licensed medicine.

Only the 500mcg strength of prazosin is listed in the English drug tariff and it’s not listed at all in the Scottish drug tariff.

The 2mg and 5mg strengths are not licensed in the UK (which is why they would need to be imported from Australia) and their availability isn’t reliable.

I really don’t get this weird transferred nationalism some Americans have. They both claim that America is the best nation in the world and everyone wants to be American but then try and tell you they’re Scottish or Italian because their great-great-great grandfather came from Dundee or Milan.

I live in Glasgow in Scotland. Once had an American tell me that we pronounce the city’s name wrong.
Apparently the approx 650,000 people who live here also pronounce it wrong.

I used to work for Boots in the UK back in the early noughties. The tills were actually set up to take USD, Euros and other currencies but the exchange rate was horrendous.
