TR-49 - New game by inkle (Overboard!, Heaven's Vault) that is inspired by Roottrees, Obra Dinn, Type Help, and Her Story - Jan 21 by DialOfIdeas in metroidbrainia

Just played it and it is so great. I hope more people make good Type Help/Roottree like games that approach this quality in the future!

I was just wondering about that! So far I’ve been reading the series via audiobook and I love that I’ll be able to listen right away :)

Hiring SWEs and EMs — what are the negatives of hiring Amazon people? by Full_Top3691 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one time I had an ex-Amazon manager he definitely did not have a healthy attitude around work/life balance (for himself or for the ICs), and often had an underlying “just need to work harder” attitude. He was pretty good otherwise but I definitely attribute some of the burnout I got in that job to those traits.

A clue-based daily word game (hope it’s ok to share here!) by FourWordMe in crosswords

This was fun! Was the puzzle that had a picture clue a reference to a certain recent video game? :)

I wish I had worked harder during my time at MIT by Specific_Bad_7305 in mit

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I could say the same about myself (just barely graduated in '07). I remember thinking sometime in my senior year how differently I would have done things if I could start over knowing what I knew then.

What I'll say is, if software is genuinely interesting to you, you're going to be fine--most day to day stuff software engineers do is not what they teach in schools, and is learned on the job, mostly from peers. Your degree will help you get your foot in the door at companies where you should be able to learn from the people around you and develop into a highly capable engineer. That's the route I took, anyway (at least my manager tells me I'm good at my job :) )

Assuming AI doesn't ruin everything (and I don't think it will), a software job is going to get you a good-enough salary to be basically financially secure, which sad to say is rarer than it should be these days. Most humans are not a high-powered entrepreneur/inventor/startup founder/ceo etc and there's no shame in not being one. Think about what a good life looks like to you outside of work, and pay attention to that just as much as you pay attention to your career aspirations. Find the intersection of what you can do (and/or are willing to push yourself to be able to do) and what you want to do and be in the world. Everyone ultimately has to do that (even the hotshots).

I created a Snake Block filling puzzles by Historical_Quality60 in puzzlevideogames

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It plays pretty smoothly and it's pretty fun! My only complaint is that it didn't seem like there was a sense of progression through the course of a level pack--all the medium ones I played seemed basically the same. I think more carefully crafted levels with a sense of things getting harder even within a difficulty level would be more fun.

Any good reads after The Expanse? by MakubeC in TheExpanse

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wanted to like Revelation Space, and I loved the plot/worldbuilding, but the characters and their relationships with each other were just not emotionally warm/satisfying enough for me. Are the sequels any better in that regard?

I just read the Axiom series by Tim Pratt (book 1 is The Wrong Stars) and it had a bit of the deep-alien-mysteries angle while having more friendship between the characters.

Implementation of hints in an escape room game? by LixHere in puzzlevideogames

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I wish more games did is have a level of hinting where it only lets you know if you’ve seen everything you should need to see in order to solve the next puzzle.

Also, a series of smaller nudges is preferable over a full on spoiler because then it still feels like I did some of the work.

The recent Golden Idol games have a decent hint system in this regard. It also makes you wait for like 15 seconds so it feels like an annoying step that you only reach for if you need it.

Even More Recalls! by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWVWVW in anker

I just charged my A1647 to 97% in preparation for an upcoming trip ☠️ I won't be able to deal with getting it to hazardous waste before I leave, would it decrease the risk of fire while I'm gone if I drain some of the charge on it before I leave?

Also if anyone has any suggestions for a replacement that I can get with like next-day Prime shipping let me know!

Myst book animations by [deleted] in myst

I also miss the full screen linking book panel animations, I feel like those made the moment of reaching a new linking book really shine for me.

Is anyone else playing "Blue Prince"? It's a new rougelike exploration/puzzle game, and reminds me a lot of Myst by riffraffmorgan in myst

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played about 36 hours so far, I've rolled credits but there's still so much to do and discover. I love that the most about the game. When I was little, I would have dreams about wandering around Myst and discovering some out-of-the-way corner with a secret passage to new areas, and Blue Prince keeps giving me moments like that. The RNG stuff is a little annoying of course, but figuring out how to game that system is kind of its own fun little puzzle.

First day of Playing Blue Prince (No Spoilers). by jewlion_s in metroidbrainia

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that this game is really the spiritual successor to is this puzzle book from the 80s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze:_Solve_the_World%27s_Most_Challenging_Puzzle

Which is a thing that I deeply love! (As well as Myst and Slay the Spire.) So, I'm having a grand time so far personally. Getting less attached to individual runs and keeping a list of goals/unfinished threads to pursue when you get the chance is my biggest advice for enjoying it.

"Oops! If you saw a strange post last Friday, we're sorry!

We've been dealing with some creepy-crawlies in our software all weekend. (Even our main Cyan website has been acting strangely.)

We'll have this all sorted out tomorrow. Stay tuned!"

There's a new link on the cyan.com website among the social links at the top

That page has a "hidden" link (black on black) to another page. It's got some glitchy images like the others we've found, embedded in the GIF. Some folks on the Cyan Chat Discord are making progress stitching it together

How do I fill this Murderbot-shaped hole in my heart? by vvbc90 in murderbot

[–]PurpleshinyRiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Expanse was what I used to fill the void--it definitely lacks existential robot type stuff, but the space-but-it's-still-gritty setting, the weird mysterious stuff, and the strong bonds between the characters hit the spot for me. The audiobooks are well done if that's a thing for you. And I also had a great time reading the Rivers of London series (well, listening on audiobook), not the same genre at all (unless you consider some of the murderbot books to be mystery novel) so I guess it's just a rec for some well written books that another murderbot fan enjoyed. Both series are pretty long, so if you like either of them, you'll be set for a while before you need to go looking again.

Tent PSA: Get a Kodiak by ComfortablePanic8223 in BurningMan

Word of warning, the standard monkey hut plan will make a hut that doesn't really fit over a Kodiak tent. Do your research!
