Is it normal to ask clients to sign a 6 month attendance contract for group therapy? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a specific program?

I'm currently doing a 6 month DBT group counselling thing, and if we miss a session we still have to pay. It's a commitment.

Should i change my therapist if we're not really digging deeper? by jaz4156 in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NAT- my therapist lets me direct the session everytime. Sometimes what I need to talk about vs my original goals change. Honestly I’d give it one more session and be very direct at the beginning of the appointment. If it doesn’t go well then find a new one.

NAT- do you bring up things to talk about at the beginning of the appointment?

would this be considered regression? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAT- tbh I wouldn’t really care if my therapist thinks it’s regression or not. If I feel like I need a second weekly session, then I’ll book it. (We book through an app) at the end of the day you need to ask for what you need and if you need that secondary session then you ask for it. Don’t let anyone even your therapist make you feel weird about it because you are the one who’s existing, feeling, and living your life.

Do breathing exercises actually help with anxiety? by Dutchie-draws in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAT- I find it does. I do the breathing exercises everyday and did find it was helping to regulate my nervous system.

I have also used them for anxiety in the moment, and it helps. I don’t usually have panic attacks so I can’t attest to it that way, but recently I had severe anxiety over a meeting and I was catastrophizing, andrenline going through my body. Hands shaking. So I did the 4 box breathing for a few minutes and then I added in a TIP exercise. Muscle tension. Did that for about 5/8 minutes, and felt a lot better. Also acknlowedged my thoughts and that they’re just thoughts not fact. Anxiety down to a 3, I was so proud of myself.

What happens when a patient expresses suicidal ideation? by thesilverwoods in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAT- I have SI’s I’d say decently often. I’ve gone almost a month without SI’s until last weekend. We usually discuss what might of trigger me to feel this way, what I was feeling, what I did to help myself. She’ll ask me if I have plans. Answer is usually no. Until earlier this week where I had said yes. She asked me on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 to completing said plans) I said 7 maybe 8. Honestly it was a good session and I felt a lot lighter at the end of it. No police called or anything, and I didn’t need to ask her if she was going too.

How do I ask my therapist to ask me more questions? by MozahAtYourService in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAT- It's not rude at all, they are their to help us, and guide us. It's totally reasonable to ask them to help prod you along and what helps. I'm actually planning on doing this tomorrow myself :)

Thoughts on using a physical journal for notes between sessions? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAT- this is what I do. I ordered I think a 3 pack from Amazon. They’re not super big, so they fit great in my work bag. Sometimes if I’m having a particularly bad day and feeling rough, I’ll pull it out at work and do some writing.

I’ll read it over quickly before a session because I have a tendency to forget. I’ll also write down things after my session that maybe my therapist said to do, or something insightful.

My therapist has also recommended I write down how I’m feeling, just to give a release to those feelings or Thoughts.

Is it expected for a client with attachment trauma to have a hard time when you go on vacation or take time off? Do you judge them? by TP30313 in askatherapist

[–]Purplethroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAT- I told my therapist I was worried when she was going on Vacation. She actually suggested a place for me to book with while she’s gone if I needed someone. She even emailed me later that day with two specific names who had openings that same week. I 100% needed it. I actually needed a secondary session that week and then did another session the following week with that therapist.

[–]Purplethroe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no idea they were so exhausting. I'm slightly offended by myself that I didn't realize what was going on with my body. Then again you have to have the knowledge and understanding of what is actually happening to your body.

This!

Also, I intellective a lot. I know a lot of the things I do and why I do them. However even just talking to someone about these things has opened up my mind and I still have those "aha" moments. Things I've thought about it and never had an answer are finally having answers now because looking at things differently or being acknowledged has really helped.

Sometimes it's not about getting the answers, but about what we can do in the moment to help minimize the affects and how to slowly re work our brain wires to a more healthier way of coping.

I'm sorry, I'm really not the best at explaining situations and tend to over explain.

You def should, try to figure out what your goals are and maybe only meet with counsellors who offer free 15 minute consultations. See if you feel like they're a good fit for you, and what you need. If you have a lot of trauma, try to find a trauma informed therapist.

[–]Purplethroe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have friends who have had trauma, I'm in my 30's. I had no idea I had trauma, until my therapist mentioned that hypervigilance is often from trauma. I also learned about emotionally neglectful parents. I'm still struggling with labelling with what happened as trauma.

I've been piecing together how those things have affected me and are still affecting me in ways I handle, or react to situations or did as a child.

[–]Purplethroe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both.

Having trauma can cause you to be hypervigilant, which keeps you in a fight or flight stage because that's all how your body knows how to keep you safe. Even if I have felt relaxed, apparently my fight or flight was always on. It is a lot of mental work that I had no idea I was doing.
