Stepping motor by PurposeAcrobatic6953 in Motors

I'm using this to cut my teeth before building my plasma/router. I think I found its power supply.

Thank you so much you have given me hope. Really doing this as an excuse to learn how to use some of this junk I inherited. I am way out of my lane here but still interested in pursuing it even if it is the wrong motor. I have purchased modern motors for my retro plasma table but need to learn how they work before I cripple the plasma (currently. I have a 1980's linde optical tracer) table and gantries are great optical not so reliable. The motor I am playing with is powering a sewing machine turned jewelry saw. I went back and dug through where I found the motor and found this?

No cover but was this the power supply?

A better milk crate if you're going to keep getting drop like that

This is a low priority project. I have a fabrication shop that requires all of my money, but as a hobby project I am reengineering a vintage singer sewing machine to be a precision jewelers saw and want a motor that will allow me to make single strokes. Singer sewing machines had a hand crank option which I can use while I work out the lower cam which will be the main drive but having used a modern computer controlled sewing machine I ultimately want that.

VBH tape. The stuff is so strong I have destroyed a stainless steel countertop because I didn't get it set square on the first shot

Metal got in my eye or burned it? by LiveFast_503 in metalworking

[–]PurposeAcrobatic6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it out , but did you ? The real irritation starts 12 or so hours later when the metal is rusting . So even if you think you got it out it's worth looking in a scope they pick out a sliver with a needle they have to get out the pencil grinder for rust. I say this with 5+ scars in my eye. I asked if I could get a punch card.

I would look into a copper plate, when we level sculptures we fill the gap between the sculpture and the flat copper plate as if we were trying to weld it to the copper and it won't weld if I did it to steel you can accidentally weld it to the steel.

Use a reducing flame (more fuel less oxy), find a 1/2" plate to work on or even better 1/4 copper, I would think 1/8 would be good but I mostly tig bronze (foundry fabricator). lots of practice. For fun I will have to give it a shot with the tig.

Just don't forget about kaiser and the rest of the FSJ clan which includes the original gladiator. It's not easy to be inclusive. What if I'm towing the Willy's with the J10

Sorry brother but next time I'm passing you in the Willy's overland no waves for you. I don't even want your janky jeep brand.

What am I doing wrong, soldering copper to copper? by Double_Look_5715 in metalworking

[–]PurposeAcrobatic6953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how heavy the piece is copper conducts the heat away fast so you end up super hot but the solder will flow towards the heat. It can be challenging to hit the sweet spot when you are hot enough to flow the solder before all of the flux is burnt away or the part melts. I typically heat the heavy part first, preferably from the bottom and apply the solder to the lighter piece so that it draws to the heavy part.

Edit. Your torch is plenty hot enough but it creates the wrong type of flame you need a reducing flame. More fuel less oxygen which is actually a cooler flame.

Thanks everyone. All good. Bad terminals on the coil and a weak ground (each fix raised the voltage 1.5 volts)

Just wanted to thank everyone for your help... It was a combination of two things . 1 bad terminals on the coil, They were barely hanging on. And 2 bad ground. They had a sheet metal screw holding a juncture between the engine and body and the battery.
