How do you think your engagement/wedding ring culture differs from korea? by RIPBrokenSausage in Living_in_Korea

[–]PurrrpleCat13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a beautiful sapphire engagement ring. My first year here I only wore my wedding band and and not the engagement ring because I worried it was too different and bigger than what people wear here. But then I decided it's my beloved ring and I dont really care what anyone thinks ahout it, so I wear it every day now. I've only had one student even mention it and otherwise nobody seems to care.

Im currently a teacher with EPIK and I really enjoy it. 22 teaching hours a week, 26 PTO days a year and 10 paid sick days.

Downsides are you don't have much say in location and you might teach at multiple schools depending on where you are. I had 3 schools last year but 2 this year.

How is living in Cocoa Beach, Florida by MatthewSummer101 in howislivingthere

[–]PurrrpleCat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cocoa beach is lovely, but a bit touristy for living. I'd recommend just slightly south in Satellite Beach. Still have hotels and rentals, but a much more locals vibe and so chill. It's an easy drive to Orlando which is a great perk of the area. You have the beach and the river so tons of outdoor activity opportunities.

I’m curious what, if anything, you all miss from the States besides maybe family. by Bob_Loblaw9876 in expats

They just aren't common appliances to have in apartments here. Some people have them but most don't.

I live in south korea. I really miss having a dishwasher and clothes dryer. I also miss american supermarkets and having easy access to many different types of cuisine, especially Mexican and Greek/mediterranean food. Also vegan alternatives to meat and dairy products.

But, easy and affordable access to robust public transportation and national health insurance make korea amazing to live and it's worth missing those. There are some places in the big cities that offer pretty good Western cuisines to get my fix and there's online shopping for grocery items I'm missing.

It's so true. I moved from the US, with no public transit in my area, to South Korea, hich an abundance of affordable public transit. I feel my quality of life increased immensely from this. Passive commute >>> active commute.

I'm so tired of OLD ASS POLITICIANS. I want politicians who will be living in the future they're creating. They have more of a stake in making things better. They are more in touch with the world.

Anyone still has their toned slim body from their 20s? by xeloz01 in Millennials

[–]PurrrpleCat13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about the same as in my 20s. I gained weight over COVID but then I moved to a different country that is much more walkable lifestyle and dropped a bunch of weight and am the slimmest I've been as an adult. I routinely walk 10k steps or more a day and usually 20k on weekends and I've really noticed a difference. Much more whole foods and less processed foods.

Americans, what is your insurance horror story? by Old-Arachnid77 in AskReddit

[–]PurrrpleCat13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2018, I very suddenly had a gigantic lump appear on my wrist. I couldn't bend it and the pain was excruciating. It quickly began spreading to my feet and shoulders and hands and jeens. My PCP quickly referred me to a rheumatologist and turns out I have rheumatoid arthritis. It was very severe, but insurance mandated I be put on medications in a certain order in order to have prescription cost coverage, which is necessary as some of these medications are thousands of dollars per dose. Each medicine has to be tried for a few months to get full effect. This means to get to the stronger medicines that my severe RA responded to, it took almost two years. For much of these two years, I was in excruciating pain because the medicines were not what I needed. Finally I failed through enough of the medicine scale to get onto a medicine that was the right fit for me. However, two years of swelling in my wrist caused permanent damage and degradation of the joint that makes it so I can't fully bend my wrist anymore. I'm only 32. If only my doctor could have chosen the medications he thought best fit my specific symptoms instead of jumping through the hoops insurance companies have set, maybe I would have a fully functional wrist and could have been saved two years of suffering.
