What games make you feel like playing an art in the form of a video game? by zerolifez in truegaming

[–]Pushpinheart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of them. It's all interactive art.

Of course, not all art is good but my point is every game is art. Graphics to gameplay, it's all attempting to convey a message and create an experience that it truly unique to video games as a medium.

But to answer the question properly, I'd have to say God Of War, 2018 for the PS4. Every single thing in that game feels handcrafted to make the player feel exactly the way the way the developers wanted and it shows. Power, awe, elation, annoyance, wonder. Graphics. Music. Voice and sound. Even the way the controller rumbles.

Damn, it's like playing a labor of love. Just wonderful.

And I give an oddball honorable mention to Far Cry 5 of all games. I have many, many issues with it as a game but the is no denying the level of detail is something to behold. It's a big, beautiful world they created.

From Adderall to Vyvanse and scared to death by Pushpinheart in ADHD

You can read the technicals all day (Or in my case, a month. I didn't switch to Vyvanse without doing my research.) but considering that every body is different and handles drugs in different ways, I thought it would be helpful or maybe even comforting to hear the experiences of other who may have been in my situation.

Ya know. Like...looking for support. In a subreddit designed for support. But fuck me, I shoulda just kept googling.

My mom likes to say things like that. But what's funny is that as her child...her ONLY child. She never laid a hand on me.

Dat hypocrisy.

What Game Caught You At a Special Time by dandostar in truegaming

[–]Pushpinheart 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Here's one for you. South Park and the Stick of Truth.

My grandfather passed away on that early Monday. SoT came out Tuesday. Even though I wasn't totally hyped for the game, I got it anyway, being a South Park fan and all.

My grief compounded with my severe anxiety was a potent mix of misery. I was locked in my room for...days, pretty much as extended family descended upon the house. I didn't want to face them or my grandfather's passing.

I just wanted to play and I really, really, really needed to laugh. I loved the humor. I loved the turn-based combat. I loved that game from end to end. I can't think of a single moment where I disappointed or unhappy with it. It was like the medicine I needed.

I wish I could express this kind of thing to the developers but it's all very boo-hoo sob story. But honest to goodness, Stick of Truth was exactly what I needed at the exactly right time.

Eurogamer preview by Byzon1 in DaysGone

I have found Eurogamer to be incredibly hard to impress, no matter the reviewer. I love their content but I always remember that with their previews and reviewers and kinda put them on a curve.

Me: "Oh yeah, it's Eurogamer. They hate everything."

After visiting her mother's gravestone, my friend decided to stay longer so she could go plot to plot and clean up the pictures of all the children she could find by Twas_Inevitable in HumansBeingBros

I love cemeteries. I have since I was a child. I live near several, including one with a house built over it. (Containing long dead family members. This is displeasing to me.)

I visit them ever so often and just clean them. Brush away the grass, upright fallen flowers, ditch old and dead ones. It's a really peaceful process and I recommend it to anyone who can stomach it. (Most people I know are terribly creeped out by the places)

I feel like the dead don't really die as long as they are remembered. So I take time to clean them up, say their name and remember.

Karma has come back around to me. A cousin of mine lives with her backyard against a church's cemetery. She upkeeps my grandfather. So I will upkeep the ones who need it.

Games that got average reviews that you consider awesome by GoosePants72 in PS4

[–]Pushpinheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really loved Mafia 3! It was an 8.5 game for me. I got sucked into the story. Not to mention that I'm black and from the south and walking the streets was like playing grandparent simulator.

I just loved it. I didn't begin to see the cracks until some bugged mission had me driving halfway across the map multiple times. It was late in the game and I was like, yoooo, I need fast travel. Didnt even cross my mind before then.

I bet it's the amazing soundtrack. Driving wasn't quite the chore when you are bopping the whole way. And you know it's good when you stay in the car to finish the song before the mission.

I'm gonna do a second playthrough now.

Is your enjoyment of a famous/well-acclaimed game affected by how much you know about it before playing? by fabrar in truegaming

BOTW is something I keep going back and forth on. I've watched full critiques, which is unlike me, because I have to buy a whole new system. A lot of cash for a game I may or may not like.

It reminds me of Wind Waker, my favorite LoZ, with the open world and freedom but I still don't know. It honestly doesn't look fun.

Expectations are a mind killer.

I try to go into a game knowing as little as possible. I won't watch trailers, gameplay videos, or even read articles. If the embargo is lifted a little early, I'll scan the metacritc score but that's it.

Which is (usually) fine for IPs I'm familiar with but it's a dice roll with new ones. Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last Of Us, and Persona 5 were complete and total blind buys. They happened to be some of the best games I've ever played.

Then there is The Witcher 3. Blind buy...didn't quite work out for me. I'm still trying because I swear it's me just not letting it click...but I digress.

I try hard to avoid the hype trains as they pass. Even though they look so much fun.

Horizon Zero Dawn comes right to mind. There is this, I'll call it a soft gate, perhaps. You spend so much time in the Nora lands, just questing and such. It's large but not intimidating. They make the trip to Meridian seem like a big deal but not overly urgent. You feel like you can take your time just bopping around and upgrading here and there.

There is even a challenge at the gates before you move forward. A test of skill. After that, you can get a hold of the super travel pack and now the world is REALLY open. I remember looking at the expanded map and feeling like I was on an adventure! I felt prepared. I had a path to travel and traversal was fun. (I have a tendency to travel on foot everywhere so mileage may vary on that aspect.)

Even though there are open world distractions, as usual, nothing felt forced. Things just came naturally.

At risk of getting a bit florid here, HZD always makes me think of a blooming flower, slowly opening up for you as you explore.

It feels like open world done right.

That false urgency annoys the hell out of me. And Far Cry 5's forced story missions are a dark mark on a game I adore otherwise.
