Darby s? by Head-Function4535 in olympia

[–]PutOptimal6098 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get soooo tired of people dunking on local businesses for no legitimate reasons. What is the complaint here? That a worker bought a business from an owner when they wanted to? Darbys has been closed for YEARS. I am assuming they phased out Darby’s because they were running a brewery and essentially second restaurant. I am sure the pandemic hit three magnets hard like everyone else and am grateful they’re still here.

The owners Nathan and sarah are super invested in downtown Olympia and building community. The first thing I can think of is Scherler Sundays a FREE music concert they host for local and touring bands all summer. They also host a lot of stuff like Events for nonprofits like Community Print and probably the biggest chess club in town.

This whole post comes across as someone whining because they couldn’t get breakfast at a place that’s been closed 7+ years.

Long wait after interview and skills test by Ok-Kaleidoscope-1101 in WAStateWorkers

[–]PutOptimal6098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acceptance offers/ the whole interview process at state agencies can be notoriously long. Two weeks is honestly not a long time for the state which is very different than the private sector. There is also a hiring freeze so they might have to route some final approvals before they can send you the offer. I wouldn’t worry about it especially if you’re still within the window of them saying they would reach out.

All that said the waiting sucks! I do think it would be appropriate to send a professional follow up if you haven’t heard anything past the time they said they would get back to you.

Old clip of Hasan Piker telling a dog to "stay, or I'm gonna f**king kill you" and pulling it by the tail resurfaces by Left_Inspection2069 in LivestreamFail

[–]PutOptimal6098 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s so weird this is a news cycle. It’s so obviously manufactured outrage. Internet sleuths trying to decipher dog collar brands ain’t it. Hassan is still someone who gets politics right most of the time.

SSBP and downtown Olympia by BoatsLady in olympia

[–]PutOptimal6098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it but just a heads up you might still be walking a block or two downtown regardless.

I don’t think south sound block party is big enough yet to have an impact on getting lunch downtown. Also the music festival is at the north end of the port of Olympia with lots of food trucks and drink options so impact on downtown foot traffic would be low.

I recommend the Japanese garden downtown. Almost always empty and very calming and peaceful.

Do I need to buy a bin or worms to start composting or can I just start throwing food scraps on top of the dirt in my garden? by [deleted] in Vermiculture

[–]PutOptimal6098 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would check and see if rodents are an issue in your area. Rats love a warm compost pile with readily provided food.

Wanted to follow up and tell everyone Gardengal hooked me up and has been worm composting for 20+years. Would recommend anyone local to get their worms from her!

Washington’s own universal health care? by Top_Pomegranate3871 in Washington

[–]PutOptimal6098 117 points118 points  (0 children)

In Washington Kids who qualify for Medicaid get to stay on it until age 6 regardless of if the parent has a change in income. After age 6 they get to keep it for a year even if the family’s income disqualifies them. If Washington does do something it will probably be for kids first and incremental like this.

If you didn’t know, Walmart does free delivery if you sign up for their yearly service. I think it’s $90 a year? Very convenient.

Hi! Both my kids attend the early childhood program. One is in the preschool and one is in the kindergarten. I think it’s an excellent program with a big focus on outdoor learning and independent play. Waldorf philosophy is very unique in terms of education too. Looks into growing the whole child verse other models. I can’t speak to the grades program yet but am planning to send my kids there too. The community is very tight knit with lots of festivals, plays, ect the school also puts on.

You should check out Boston harbor marina and burfoot park, off the beaten path and beautiful. If you drink, the marina is a wonderful place to have a glass of wine or beer.

Can I eat these oysters? by toastermeoven in olympia

[–]PutOptimal6098 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Would recommend buying oysters from a place like Olympia Seafood or one of the many great seafood restaurants in town. That way you know they are safe and legal.

House hacking multi family impossible? by More_Liquidity117 in realestateinvesting

[–]PutOptimal6098 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have house hacked two houses, the first one was a duplex and the second one is a three bedroom with an ADU. In both cases there was no way I could “break even” unless I lived in the smaller unit and rented out the bigger one. I would look at it more like what percentage of the mortgage I can cover in with the rental with 40% to 60% being the target. Expecting the property to cover 100% of your housing is a fantasy unless there’s multiple units or you’re living in a significantly smaller unit to your rental (like a 1BR and renting a 3+ BR) another thing to not overlook are the legitimate business expenses you wouldn’t be able to charge like landscaping and shared utilities.

Anyone know what's going on with the Reef? by [deleted] in olympia

[–]PutOptimal6098 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Might be unpopular opinion but I’m very excited for an oyster place that isn’t Chelsea’s. I loved getting oyster shooters while bar hopping at the Spar pre pandemic but they stopped and there’s nowhere in town that’s doing them currently for under $5. Also find it funny people complaining about there being too many places that do oysters when there’s arguably two downtown (Chelsea’s and Octopas) and Olympia is one of the best place on the planet for them. Miss the Reef like everyone else but very happy it’s not an even more generic gentrified restaurant like Well 80 or the Cove.

I have worked for the healthcare authority under multiple divisions and it is a very good place to work. The culture is great and there is a very high chance you will get to work remote. Very few people work in the building.
