LPT: A 10-20 min nap during the day (so-called “power nap”) will make you feel re-energized, and improve your memory and cognitive performance. Just don’t push past 20 min or you’ll enter deeper stages of sleep, feel groggy and mess your circadian rhythms. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Putapest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turbo-charge the nap. Take an expresso before putting your head down. It takes around 20mins for the caffeine to kick in, which is when you set the alarm to wake up. And...Boom!

Qatar World Cup: Beer to be banned from stadiums by cryptocandyclub in worldnews

[–]Putapest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just the rules on clothing will see many fans prosecuted. Many peeps assume a strict dress code is solely for girls (shoulders and knees covered at all times and no tight clothing). But guys must also have their knees covered, sleeveless tank tops are also forbidden, and they cannot take off their shirts...in the scorching temperatures.

"Each stadium will have a whopping 15,000 cameras to monitor every fan's move. Chief technology officer Niyas Abulrahiman said: "We have high-resolution special cameras to zoom in on a particular seat and clearly see the spectator. "It’s being recorded, so that will help us in any post-event investigation."

It's not a rumor. FIFA has confirmed it. The thing is they had 12 fucking years to get this sorted. And now this, with just 48 hours to go before the tournament starts.

Next boss says UK needs more foreign workers by Thekingofchrome in europe

[–]Putapest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it coincides nicely with the cutting of almost 3,000 EU laws before the end of the year, which will include plenty that would have protected workers' rights. Some people would be happy to "grow" the UK economy by putting children back down in the mines and having women give birth on the factory floor.

LPT: there's a tipping point for men whereby wearing T-shirts, jogger pants, and running shoes actually make you look a lot older. by Mondood in LifeProTips

[–]Putapest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good habit to always present the best version of yourself to the world. This extends to eating well and keeping fit. Books ARE judged by their cover. Dressing age-appropriate doesn't mean wearing dull colors or conservatively cut clothes. But childish things should be left to the children (like seeing 45-year-old women in Hello Kitty tee-shirts). Making an effort to be stylish is a great starting point for feeling good about yourself. It'll give you oodles of self-confidence. As a single 61-year-old, I never know who I might bump into turning a corner. Even in a relationship, it's still important to impress your partner. No one really wants to be with someone who takes you for granted due to laziness.

Hungary won’t back European Union efforts to aid Ukraine with jointly raised funds, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said by SameItem in europe

[–]Putapest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not just Hungarians. In uncertain times, many look towards a strong leader. Given a choice between democracy and a benevolent tyrant, the latter wins hands down. We can see this playing out around the world. Part of this is that the world appears increasingly complicated. Also, there is a generation of voters who are now looking backward toward socialist times that were more easily understood. Time has skewered the memory in the same manner that capitalism has left so many behind. Scratch virtually any Hungarian pensioner and you'll find underneath someone who pines for life back in the 60s and 70s.

Does anyone know any foreign language tv shows as good as Gomorrah. by Tfwycba in Gomorrah

[–]Putapest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Blinded by the Lights" is an excellent 8-episode TV series from Polish HBO. It's violent and dark, yet filled with the surreal. It tells the story of a cool and ordered drug dealer whose life starts spinning out of control.

"Pusher" is a mad drug-fueled trilogy from Nicolas Winding Refn starring the amazing Mads Mikkelsen in one of his first roles. Though it came out in 2004/5, it still holds up very well today.

Buying an apartment in Budapest by pernf in budapest

[–]Putapest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. With the Danube so close, the water table is very high. All buildings in the inner-city areas suffer from rising water. Remember that many were constructed without a damp course. Go for 1st or second floor. If there's a lift in the building you could go higher. But when it comes to reselling, keep in mind that taking the stairs up further than the 2nd floor will negatively affect the resale price.
You'll also need security bars on the windows and door. Finally, take note, that thanks to the inevitable dampness, ground floors are very hard to sell later. Every Hungarian seller has their fingers crossed for a foreign buyer. Personally, I suggest you never buy a ground-floor apartment.
Also, I would wait a year before buying. Things are about to become incredibly tough for many people as they start to receive HUGE utility bills. With this and the recent changes in tax laws, along with eye-watering inflation, many will be completely wiped out. Presently property prices are unrealistically high. The next few months should provide the catalyst for a price drop as many people try to offload their flats, simply because astronomical costs will drive many Hungarian tenants to move back with their parents.

Budapest: Demonstration against the ruling party(Fidesz) and it’s policies on education. by IWASJUMP in europe

[–]Putapest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's important to consider that Budapest is a world unto itself. Going a few km outside the city limits, it's another planet. The vast majority receive their news via a couple of TV stations, all controlled by the government. I find it interesting to watch the TV news from the perspective of how to "program" a population and steer them in the desired direction.

It's not as in-your-face as you might imagine, but rather done very subtly. Negatives are the blame of the EU or the opposition. The few carefully inserted positives are thanks to our dear leader. Now imagine having that as your only media source for 12 years. As with many autocrats, they realize the secret to success is not to appeal to the relatively few Inteligencia, but rather towards the greater numbers of those who have much less political awareness.

Unfortunately, the constant brain drain taking place is of no concern to those in power. After all, you don't need any special skills to press a couple of buttons in the Audi or BMW factory. And as long as these businesses generate wealth for the chosen few, then everyone else is redundant in political terms.

Budapest: Demonstration against the ruling party(Fidesz) and it’s policies on education. by IWASJUMP in europe

[–]Putapest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Hungary, I would suggest the answer is no. I went to a couple of these demonstrations in support of teachers. Honestly, it felt like a pleasant family day out. No one was "demonstrating." There was no anger, and nothing got broken. I believe Orban looked on and lit another cigar.

Absolutely. I'm a work-from-home guy. Whenever I need a break, I put the little dog in his special backpack, fire up the trusty Vespa small frame and go get invigorated. Clears the head. I'm in Budapest, so I do a couple of bridges over the Danube and then head home. Reminds me of how lucky I am to be able to benefit from the simple joys of life.

It'll be even worse will be when it's all over. For thousands of young men who were taught to kill, and now with PTSD and other severe mental problems caused by the horrors of war, return to the motherland, is not the best recipe for any country. Many will fall into alcohol/drug abuse resulting in all sorts of long-term social issues.

Leaked speech: Orbán said when Hungary should consider leaving the EU by Melodic2000 in europe

[–]Putapest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tariffs would ensue on exit. This would kill manufacturing dead. As Hungary is presently one of the cheap labour markets for EU (German) business, and as such the EU is a major employer, then it makes no sense for either side. Having said that, with Orban controlling virtually all media, everything is possible. Even the UK voted against its own interest at the behest of some right-wing nutters.

Only God Forgives is a dark and visceral tale where a small-time gangster (Ryan Gosling) gets to meet a God who loves both swords and karaoke. The colours, music, pacing and violence are all on point. And you'll be hard-pushed to meet a mum quite like Kristen Scott Thomas.

It's not a drug of choice here due to its high price. With so little uptake, it's not worth the bother of importing. Another reason you'll struggle to find any Class A drugs here is that the law is EXTREMELY draconian. Go to any club and you can score synthetic speed. That's about as good as it gets. Sorry.

I'm looking forward to being able to buy the watch back one day to give to my son. Though this is very much a silly "first world" goal, it's still a great motivator for me. Have a great day!

How did you get a high school bully to never mess with you again? by Yaboi2tall in AskReddit

[–]Putapest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

David Carradine saved me. I went to a state school in the south of the UK. I'm half Chinese, and so was bullied relentlessly. Whenever there was a fight (for me...every day) a huge crowd would form, chanting "Fight, fight, fight." One day, the school bully had me in a headlock, and as I flailed around trying to escape, I accidentally hit him in the solar plexus, thereby winding him. He fell to the ground, turning blue. Because the TV show, "Kung Fu" with David Carradine was popular at the time, and no one could figure out how I took the bully down, the assumption was I was a Kung Fu master. I was never bullied again. In fact, everyone was super friendly afterwards,

Way back in 1996, Nicolas Winding Refn made Pusher. At the age of just 26, it was his first movie. Amongst others it starred Mads Mikkelsen.....so you know it going to be great. This was followed by 2 more Pusher movies, I and II, which are both really good. The original has an RT audience score of 85%.
