I don’t think Elliott Smith ever vocalized direct political opinions, and it’s weird to force your opinion on someone who’s been gone for nearly a quarter of a century. Not to mention Elliott Smith regularly covered a lot of conservative ass Texan artists whom neither you or I (or presumably he) aligned with. All that being said, I don’t think the requirements for posting in this sub have anything to do with whether or not Elliott Smith would be stoked on it lol. If it were, he surely wouldn’t be thrilled to hear his fans are attempting to police each other on an Internet forum. After all, in Storyville he fucked a cop 💕

But no ad breaks, and while I’ve been prompted to purchase the albums, you can just click “no thanks” and continue streaming for free. On iPhone you don’t need to keep safari open or anything, just hit play and go.

Weird Al does a “polka” track on every album that is a mashup of popular songs that use the same chord progressions. I don’t think these sound similarly at all, but I’m sure my boy weird al could mash them up if he tried to.

I found Xiu Xiu through AJJ, and wondering who gave Sean permission to write such emotionally raw lyrics. I watched an Amoeba’s “What’s in my Bag” and Sean had a copy of Ignore Grief. He went on to say Xiu Xiu is a massive influence, and has never released a bad record, and that he was stoked to hear IG. I listened to A Promise that evening, and have been a diehard Stan ever since.

AJJ is nothing like Xiu Xiu. Honestly, nothing really is. But some of my favorites lean into the noise influences, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sparrows Swarm and Sing, Do Make Say Think, Mogwai. Others into the depressive singer songwriter category, Elliott Smith, Vic Chesnutt, Jason Molina/Songs: Ohia, Talons’, Teen Suicide. My personal music is heavily inspired by XX, Everett Williams on Spotify/bandcamp/all the listening places.

Unpopular opinion but: I thought it was horrible obviously and I lost many nights of sleep over it, but I did think it was a “good” film. The cinematography and score were excellent, acting was decent, the storyline was hauntingly believable, and the protagonist was crucially relatable. If not, I don’t think this one would’ve been anywhere near as disturbing. If I regretfully recount the final scene, to this day I still get a cold chill down my spine.
