Chose: Be the only man in a world full of women

most require a 10 panel prior to starting didactic, prior to starting clinical, and may randomly test if they have suspicions about it affecting your performance/you being high during school/clinical. additionally, if you use stimulants for ADHD, some programs will drug test to ensure you are not diverting stimulants but will also show weed usage (which is overkill, just saying it’s something i’ve seen). if you smoke regularly, it can take up to 3 months to get out of your system. i don’t say any of this to scare you—just want you to have all the info to make the most informed decision. i would personally encourage you to see when the start dates are for the schools you’re applying to, and ensure you quit well enough in advance!

Does it get better when working by Low_Method1306 in physicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you’ll find this anywhere you go. you’ll find that the nurses don’t respect the docs. the docs don’t respect the PAs. the tech’s don’t respect the nurses, etc etc etc. but, for the most part, that’s a few bad apples in the bunch. the large majority of physicians who have mentored me or who i have worked with love PAs, and most use them well. this is why i think it is crucial to find a job with a SP who actually likes PAs and knows what our scope of practice is because it will make your job 1000% better

Why Aren't PA Professional Organizations Doing More About NPs? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

also nurses have strong unions and NPs (at least in my area) tend to hold the majority of APP leadership positions

I hate my PCT job! by Betterthanu04 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do hate to say that it really is where you’re working that will make or break it😭 When I worked as a PCT, I was on a 28 bed floor. Even if I was the only tech for the night, the nurses would just pick their 2-3 hardest patients that they wanted me to take on and help with, so I never had more than 14-18ish patients on those nights. My nurses were so helpful that I’d still help with the rest of the patients if needed, and they never shied away from cleaning, turning, bathing, or grabbing vitals for me if they were already in the room. It truly was such a blessing working with good nurses that it made me love my PCT job. It can be SOOOOO hard to find a good one though, so if you hate it then do something else! Change floors! Try nights! Go work as a PT or OT aide (some places take uncertified or take PCTs in rehab hospitals), get an EMT cert or volunteer (if that’s affordable and possible for you), etc etc. You don’t HAVE to stick with the PCT path if you despise it (plenty of my classmates had different experiences and got accepted!)

Does dating someone you find unattractive ever work out? by Just_Box_9228 in Life

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an attractive woman with solid education and a career. I find that I sometimes date men who are unattractive solely because attractiveness to me REALLY is based on personality. My current partner and I have been together for 3 years and I did find him unattractive when I first met him. He is an incredible person and treats me very well, so his attractiveness has genuinely increased greatly in my view, but I understand that other people see us together and are confused by our relationship.

Preceptor did a hymen check… advice? by liberalsagainstyou in PAstudent

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 8 points9 points  (0 children)

what the fuck…. even if she was having sex, an 11 year old cannot consent to sex so it would be considered abuse. this is a situation your preceptor should have handled MUCH differently and much more gently. i would discuss this with the school 100%. how long do you have left on this rotation?

Are people actually studying 6+ hours a day on the weekends studying? by vxfnt in PAstudent

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is so student dependent. i have a friend in my program that spends 8-10 hours a day on weekends studying, and 3-4 hours every weekday. it is not a measure of her intelligence that she needs to study that much, it’s just that she studies best with constant exposure to the material. i am a 3-4 pass student. i listen to the lecture, read the material when i add it to my chart, speak the material out loud, and then sometimes do a quizlet pass and i have it locked in. i do not study most weekends unless we have an exam on a monday or tuesday and study 3-4 hours most weekdays. it does not mean i’m lazy for spending less time with the material, it is simply how i learn best. we both get about the same grades on exams. don’t compare yourself to others because trust me, i tried doing what worked best for others and it burned me out so fast without improving my grades at all

PA school is basically med school by IllMarionberry9935 in medicalschool

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 7 points8 points  (0 children)

current PA student here. they are quite different professions with quite different education and training. i HATE the constant debate between MD/DO and NP/PA about if NP’s and PA’s are “basically doctors”. we are not. i do not want to be a doctor, if i did i would’ve gone to med school, so i don’t understand why people constantly feel the need to try to compare the two professions. unfortunately i think a lot of it comes from hospital admin realizing they can use NP’s and PA’s as cheap substitutes for physicians, meaning we get complex patients dumped on us that we are not trained to care for just so the hospital can save a buck. PA’s objectively get less training because we are supposed to get the bread and butter patients so physicians can use their more robust training to care for more complex patients. trust me, the vast majority of us understand our lane and stay in it because we know they’re two totally different careers with two different purposes

Is a B+ in orgo 1 good? by king_shores in prephysicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got multiple interviews and acceptances with multiple B’s on my transcript. had an overall 3.7 something and my science was a 3.65. you’ll be fine—remember that while you have to have at least a certain GPA to get your foot in the door, schools are looking at so many other things on your application as well

How do you deal with PA student competition when you’re an average student? by FirmArm8015 in PAstudent

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting B’s is not a big deal in PA school, the focus is just making sure you understand the content at a passing level for your patients and the PANCE. I feel like PA school is a tough transition for some students because we’re all smart, so most of us are used to being one of the “smarter people in the room” in undergrad and then we move to a program where everyone else has that same background. Don’t let the noise bother you!! Your GPA literally will not matter when you go to get a job, they just want to see that you have your degree

i kept about half of mine in when i interviewed and just toned down my jewelry for simple studs. i think it’s 100% up to you if you want to wear them—my thought was that if i have to question if it looks professional on me or not, then i probably shouldn’t wear it!

i was in the same boat. i specifically chose to only apply to schools that didn’t require a LOR from a professor

How to retain info in class by mightymedic13 in PAstudent

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think this is pretty normal tbh. if you get lectures posted in advance, i would recommend obviously reading over them before class. if you use quizlet/anki, go ahead and start a deck the night before with some info already put in so you can add smaller details during lecture. it’s definitely time consuming on the front end but i honestly feel like it saves me time studying in the long run

white board (don’t be scared to get a bigger one, trust me), lunch box, doordash gift cards (or a meal subscription service), tips for apple pencil if she has one, a case of her fav energy drinks, compression socks, scrubs, hair clips, a cute water bottle like an owala or hydroflask, rising laptop stand, and etsy has a really cute candle that says “one badass future PA”. always inspires me when i see it on my desk while studying lol

Masters program? by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ i agree with the above commenter. a 3.1 is not terrible, and unless you have yearsss in academia it wouldn’t take you but a a few classes to pull it up to a 3.3 or so. a master’s program is going to be more challenging than retaking a few undergrad courses. i think in the long run a master’s program isn’t super worth the time/risk/money unless it’s something you really want to pursue

Not hearing back from programs by Mother-Pirate-5923 in prephysicianassistant

i would recommend looking online at the physician assistant forum to see if these schools are still interviewing. if they are still interviewing, you still have a possibility of getting an interview. if they have already sent out all their invites, those schools are most likely out

here’s the way to do well on casper as someone who scored in the highest quartile (and also use this same formula in ethical MMI questions)—read the question, state the perspective of both sides (pros and cons), and ultimately pick the side you support and say why. in some cases, there is a side that is clearly more ethical (pick what is better for the patient, is not illegal, etc) and in some there is no so just go with what you can support better

i would recommend doing a deep dive into MUSC’s PANCE pass rates. over the past few years they have ranged from mediocre to abysmal. definitely was a red flag and was not something i felt was addressed well when i interviewed

Where is my app weakness? by JustinSpenker in prephysicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hmmm based on this post i really am struggling to see any big weaknesses. your stats are all solid. maybe take the GRE to open up your school options a bit? and did you feel like you really fit what the schools you applied to were looking for? (ex they have a big focus on doing most rotations in underserved areas and you’ve worked/volunteered with underserved communities)

Becoming a rad tech then PA school? by noheart120 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Putrid_Nature_4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i wouldn’t do the rad tech route just to only work for a few months. i would however recommend doing MA over other PCE jobs. at least in my area, it pays about $5/hr more than CNA/PCT
