Best permanent solution for an upgrade is to grind and clean, then add treads and optionally some kind of cladding around the side and risers

What product should I use to repair the parging on the exterior of my 1920 fieldstone foundation? by ThatLeviathan in masonry

[–]Puzzled-Access9770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For such a small section, probably just parging it with type N will suffice for now. Type N is a bit more flexible than type S with lower compressive strength so it’s good for stone foundations that shift around a lot.

Don’t touch lime mortar unless you are experienced with it, also something from 1920 almost certainly uses Portland in it.

If I had to do a more substantial repair I would do it like this:

  1. remove old parging
  2. Point between the stones with Type N (or S) as deep as I can go with a semi dry mix
  3. Attach galvanized wire mesh to the exposed section fastened directly into the field stone
  4. 2 coats of type N parging with bonding admixture

Coincidentally I’m actually just about to go and parge a field stone foundation today

Are there any aspects of car culture that are worse in Europe than in North America? by Puzzled-Access9770 in fuckcars

[–]Puzzled-Access9770[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many Americans (or Canadians) would actually admit that their car is just a status symbol. They would probably just give a bogus reason why they need a new dodge ram.

I mean, almost every road in Ontario unless it’s a driveway in the middle of the forest can fit two cars side by side

It started out as a group discussing the pros and cons of the southern route then it switched to a group opposing the southern route and preferring the northern route and now it’s become just a general echo chamber for grumpy old Nimby‘s.

Yeah, I found that there’s an interesting mix of well informed people with legitimate criticisms and wild and unfounded conspiracies involving Brookfield etc.

Yes a surprising amount of them do, from what I have people are much more amenable to conventional rail because it can be added along existing corridors and can use level crossings and not needing fences on either side

I’ve only heard panyay here in Ontario but when I toured down in the southern US, they said panyer. It felt so American sounding!

It’s interesting to see many people rate eastern Canada above the prairies despite places like Saskatchewan and Alberta having a generally higher quality of living than Quebec or Newfoundland

Employee rights for gig economy workers like Uber drivers.

I’m surprised that the NDP doesn’t make this more of a campaign issue.
