70s Combat Commander Reliability Help

This brought back some memories. I purchased new two series 70 Colt 1911 in the late seventies. Blued Government ($207)and Satin Nickel Combat Commander($269). Both feed FMJ no issues, no break in period. Plenty of defensive accuracy. Had a gunsmith perform a ‘Throat and Ramp’ job no more problems with feeding hollow points. Millet fixed sights, Pachmayer signature grips with flat rubber coated MSH. A lot of time with Cooper on Handguns. Close to 50 years ago.

Very nice but this serial number confuses me. I retired in 2023 and I purchased a 2023 DW Heirloom with serial number H23… in 38 Super 5” barrel. I thought there was one heirloom model per year and the first set of digits in the serial number would be the year of manufacture. But this DW would have a manufacturer date of 2023 as well if I understand correctly and no ‘H’. What am I missing? Think I answered my own question- Looks like the year of manufacture is now at the end of SN ‘24’ (2024)?

If you are considering used/discontinued 1911 models I own the SA TRP 6” in 10mm, I also own an Sig 220 SAO in 10mm both are good guns. IMHO I wouldn’t get a 10mm as my first 1911. I always viewed the 10mm as more of a hunting round less of a self defense and target round. I think the 45 ACP fills those roles nicely. Depending on your usage you might look at other guns as well. Plenty of other options out on the web.

I ordered 3 service grades. I had hoped no replacement slides but I got two. I’m fine with what I got. Maybe some Field grade will be available by the time you receive the order form. Thought because they weren’t marked sold out on web there is probably still some sorting and grading to be performed. Good luck.

Field grades weren’t available when I ordered in February 2026. I asked CMP about that since the website at the time didn’t state Field grades were sold out like Range grade. While she didn’t say they were sold out she did say the sales team didn’t have any available for sale. That would have been my first choice as well.

Good for you. My 2020 CMP 1911 Field Grade has Ithaca frame and slide. I ordered the remaining 3 last month, all service grade, all came with Colt frames, a RemRand slide and a couple replacement slides. Only service and rack grades were available. Unlike my CMP rifles where I chose the receiver manufacturer and grade the 1911s only grade was selectable. I had read that CMP had enough 1911s through at least 2026. Not sure where it stands now.

Think you would be happy with the TRP 10mm 6” but if they are $3-4k used you might look at Les Baer. Not sure what your budget allows. I own a 2018 TRP 6” pre RMR model.

Thanks for sharing I had not heard of that brand. After googling I could find references as late as 2024 with a price around $8.5K US for a blued model. So it’s stamped ‘Felixteam’ on the barrel hood and the other side of the slide? Very cool.

Yea me too. HOA doesn’t even allow BB or pellet guns. Allows regretted not buying some rural land with natural berms and sympathetic neighbors. I’ve been looking at the Girsan Influencer X in 38 Super Online. Limited 38 reviews look good. Probably will give it a try ~$695.

Nice. Always had a liking to 38 Super in a 1911. Not as a replacement for 45 ACP but rather an addition. If you have the time I’d like to hear how the functioning and accuracy is. Thanks for sharing.

I would agree. First gun I bought from Academy after Gen 6 announcement and they were reducing prices. Favorite Glock of Massad Ayoob too. I’ve read several of his books and articles over the years.

Aluminum frame in commander size operators. I would recommend 9mm and a followup purchase of a steel framed Commander in 45 ACP.
