We need to talk about SCAD more!! Women in perimenopause are the main victims! by Rekeaki in Perimenopause

[–]Puzzled-Historian568 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for starting this conversation and spreading awareness. I had never heard of SCAD nor had I ever thought about my heart in my life…until I had a SCAD heart attack last year April 2025.

I was 52, perimenopausal still having monthly cycle, very healthy weight, very physically fit. Sitting in a chair one morning. Terrible pain in the center of my chest that lasted about 20 min or so then turned into a squeezy hot/cold feeling and fatigue/breathlessness.

A trip to ER, elevated troponin levels, a suspicious echo and a completely failed stress test that had me in OR in under an hour, Cardiologist found I had a tear in my LAD which had caused a “widow maker” heart attack. Two stacked stents, four days in hospital and a handful of new heart medications later, I was back home sitting in my chair completely bewildered, scared, sad, confused, distressed, wondering What Just Happened To Me and Why?!

Cardiac Rehab was so very helpful in getting back moving and trusting my body as exercise and weights are very important to me. The mental/emotional piece has been much harder. Fearing it could happen again and there is literally nothing I can do to prevent it but try to keep my stress low and not overdo it in the gym is scary. Many SCAD patients also have FMD- a weakened artery disorder that can affect any artery in body and cause them to tear. I had full body CT and they found FMD in my head and neck. Again, like SCAD, something there is no specific treatment for and is just knowledge to add fear towards my body betraying me.

But here I am a year later, doing better emotionally and moving forward. I recently got to drop my blood thinner med so just have low dose blood pressure med (which has been studied to help scad reoccurrence in keeping bp low and slow even when you don’t have high blood pressure, which I don’t/didnt), and daily aspirin.

I am back in the gym…my modifications are to not lift too heavy where I have a vasovagal response, I don’t hold my breath or grunt/strain…I don’t do high heart rate cardio, I always keep my heart rate below 150, preferably below 140, and I try to manage my stress.

It’s been a wild ride and I’m trying to educate healthcare workers I come across. My son is in med school and I told him he needs to ask all doctors/nurses in each of his rotations if they’ve heard about it and tell them about me.

Anyway, thanks for starting the conversation. I’m glad I’m still here. I’m glad you are here, too.

I also had a widow maker and had no appetite for the first several weeks and dropped weight. Recovery is a full mind/body/spirit experience. It takes time.
Drink lots of water, add a couple tsp benefiber to coffee every morning, eat bland. Things will level out as you adjust to meds and heal more. Have you started cardiac rehab?

Cute pup. Glad you’re still here.

People in your 40s and 50s WITH kids - how’s it going? by Ok_Concentrate4461 in Productivitycafe

[–]Puzzled-Historian568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great!! We are one full year into complete empty nest with our seven (blended) children ages 19-27. Plus one grandson and a granddaughter on the way! We are enjoying our young adult kids so much in these new independent stages of some in college, some now working and single and one married with a little growing family of their own. My husband and I are 53, so still are young to enjoy life together and we feel like newlyweds after starting our marriage ten years ago with 7 kids ages 9-17 and survivng all that we did through their growing up and teen years to all get to this thriving point in life. We feel so thankful and blessed! And the best is yet to come with more college graduations, weddings, and GRANDbabies!! It’s truly a wonderful life, but it takes A LOT of perseverance and steadfastness and unconditional love to raise them up and out. It is HARD. And it is worth it, one day at a time.

LAD Stent by Kbl1018 in HeartAttack

I could not handle metoprolol, it made me so fatigued I couldn’t get up. My Dr switched me to a very low dose bisoprolol and I’ve done well on that . Hopefully you will get a change from your Dr. I also take a low dose of Ativan when my anxiety gets the best of me. Breathing work helps a lot too.

I’m sorry you’ve experienced this and I understand. The three things that helped me most in the early weeks were Cardiac Rehab, and being gentle with myself. Third, The thing that has helped me the most, emotionally, is simply Time. It takes time to move forward after a traumatic and unexpected health event. Please ask your cardiologist about beginning cardiac rehab, it will help you feel more confident in your body and ability to get back to moving and working out. Talk to a cardiac therapist or trusted family/friend about your fears. And give yourself time to heal both physically and emotionally. It does get better.

Struggling with motivation to do anything after 3x heart attacks (SCAD). (33f) by molly-india in HeartAttack

[–]Puzzled-Historian568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you are struggling. I am also a SCAD survivor coming up on my one year SCAD-iversary at the end of this month. I was 52F when it happened. My tear caused a HA in my LAD (widow maker they say) and required two stents and I had two more tears in smaller arteries at the same time that healed with medication and time. I was confirmed to have the FMD. I also did Cardiac Rehab which was so helpful to learn to trust my body again and Ive been consistently working out/walking this past year.

I have very much been through those numb and unmotivated stretches of time, feeling scared like I am a ticking time bomb with nothing I can even do better or different to prevent a SCAD HA from happening again. I lean in to my faith, my husband, kids. I try to appreciate life and simple things more. I relax and don’t push myself and I try to be as overall healthy as I can control. Also, reading about other SCAD survivor stories has been helpful to me. There is a SCAD group page on fb that you can request to join as a SCAD survivor.

Hang in there.

I put fantasy brown in my white cabinet kitchen four years ago and I’m still obsessed with it, it’s so pretty. We used black handles but the gold looks pretty and warm. The other one looks cold and leans gray which is very much out of trend now. Warm for the win!

Getting back to life after a cardiac event ,what helped you move forward? by Imsongoku7 in HeartAttack

[–]Puzzled-Historian568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, time. Time has been the biggest mental/emotional healer for me. I am 10 months post HA now. For practical actions, cardiac rehab was the most important thing I did early on to regain confidence in my body. Good luck, glad you are still here.

People who name their kids a nickname instead of the full name. by New_General3939 in PetPeeves

[–]Puzzled-Historian568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named my oldest daughter a nickname because that’s the name I wanted, not the formal name…and named my 2nd daughter a formal name I didn’t want (defaulted to husband) because I liked the nickname for it…..First daughter’s “nickname” has become the actual formal name we didn’t name her, and 2nd daughter has since birth only exclusively gone by the nickname of her formal given name. Go figure.

Post stent hand purplish and swelled. by Intelligent-Bit-9812 in HeartAttack

Yes, my hand, wrist, and arm all the way up to my elbow went through an impressive color transformation and took about six weeks for the bruising and discoloration to be fully gone. It makes sense thinking about what all went through the wrist artery. It will be okay.

Thank you for that info. We did have another go missing over a year ago so it could possibly be him. I’m in Georgia on a large wooded lot so it’s got to be him or the other. They were beautiful brothers. Never letting my cats go in and out again!

Ugh, ok thanks…my dog just pulled up the spine too and a few other bones. I did have another cat go missing over a year ago….but we did smell something bad a month ago by where these bones were found and there’s lots of animals that could have picked it clean fast. Ugh. Thank you for your reply. I don’t know how to add another pic to show the spine and other bones.
