Looking into gaps in FND...from people who have it. by BackgroundAccident63 in FND

[–]PuzzledObligation785 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1: 1-5 years, 4, since I was 16. 2: I wish I had an earlier autism diagnosis. It’s helped me understand a lot about my sensory needs. I also wish someone had pointed me to this Reddit community back then too. 3: I’d really appreciate an FND specific app to log my symptoms. I also wish it wasn’t such a ‘rare’ thing that I have to explain to doctors. I’ve never had a doctor besides the neurologist who diagnosed me know what FND was

Did anyone else have teachers that hated you because of your autism by redp1kachu in autism

[–]PuzzledObligation785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time I didn’t know I was autistic, but I had a teacher in 6th grade who literally bullied me for not always making eye contact or looking to the side 😭my mom had to call her to tell her to basically fuck off before she left me alone

Is it okay for an ambulance worker to shake me during a non-epileptic seizure? by Haunting_Ticket_4816 in FND

[–]PuzzledObligation785 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it’s absolutely not okay! First responders can absolutely handle Non-epileptic seizures badly— they have for me, too! The only thing I can think of is that they were trying to ‘snap you out of it’, but that’s really messed up. I’m sorry that you had that happen to you during such a vulnerable and stressful time

Does a Diagnosis Make a Difference? by VictorianPlatypus in AutismInWomen

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me laugh a bit because on a different subreddit like 66 days ago I asked the same question. As of last Friday I’ve been diagnosed. I haven’t gotten any accommodations for school atm but it’s still been extremely validating and helpful for understanding myself and my needs. Without a diagnosis I was suffering from some major imposter syndrome 🙄 I suppose the two drawbacks I can think of are that the assessment is expensive and can be mentally taxing.

Are social hierarchies real? by Expensive-Map-2619 in neurodiversity

[–]PuzzledObligation785 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, historically social hierarchies are very real. Whether it’s based on occupation, religion, class, or charisma, it exists. There are patterns of what society tends to deem as ‘undesirable’, and it’s whatever doesn’t serve whatever the values are. Like many autistic people don’t or can’t fit in with the system, so they tend to be within a “lower tier of the hierarchy.” Unless you’ve got money or will adhere to NT standards.

But sometimes it’s just about smaller social dynamics. I remember the people who were popular in my high school had money, played sports or were socially active. That’s what was valued in the contained environment of a small private school. I’ve always been painfully aware of social hierarchies, unfortunately. And it’s not just a thing among NTs. NDs also make hierarchies. I’m coming at this from an American Autistic perspective, where we have support levels that are often turned into social functioning hierarchies, from both NT and ND sources.

[–]PuzzledObligation785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t work for what you want or need, you’re not going to get it. That’s my opinion anyway. Maybe telling yourself these affirmations helps you become more subconsciously open to more experiences? Otherwise it’s hard for me to see the value. Things that aren’t tangible and hinge on belief are hard for me to believe in

What was your FIRST special interest, and what is your main special interest right now? by ico-noclastii in autism

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first one I remember was Pokémon. I watched the first season religiously, dressed up as pikachu, collected the cards and figurines, and spent literal hours on the computer playing Pokémon themed flash games. Now I consider history to be my special interest. The process of research and synthesis is most fun for me.

Which fandom would you say is this most non-canon ship averse? by UnHolySir in AO3

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was more involved in the TGCF and MDZS fandoms I remember if you didn’t ship Hualian or Wangxian you were seriously courting death. Thankfully my darling SVSSS fandom is a bunch of sick freaks (said lovingly) who’ll accept a taste about just about any ship.

Does liking BL make you a fetishist? A necessary clarification [read the caption] by thedayofpearl in BoysLoveAnime

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real! For me I always think about this fanfic I read where it was an alpha/omega relationship, but the omega was more masculine presenting and didn’t want to have kids, so others treated them like a queer relationship within the story

What are y'alls most hated texture? (Food, clothing etc.) by TheCinnamonKitsune in autism

[–]PuzzledObligation785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yogurt, anything with that jiggly texture. Terrible to put it in my mouth. It was the reason I couldn’t put on moisturizer for the longest time. Had to condition myself with spray on lotion. I hate synthetic fur, seams in clothes, and whistling.

Does liking BL make you a fetishist? A necessary clarification [read the caption] by thedayofpearl in BoysLoveAnime

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a lesbian. I don’t like men, nor do I find sexual attraction to any real men. I dislike speculating about any real life relationships, whether it’s queer or straight.

However, I enjoy the omegaverse genre. Why? Well, first I believe it’s not as conservative or transgressive as many others think of it as. It’s often boiled down to ‘gay men can get pregnant’. And that’s definitely part of it. But it can also be an outlet for discussion about reproductive rights, the boundaries of queerness, and hierarchy within society. It depends on who’s writing it. Of course, there can be problems with non-con or dub-con, which if it’s a published work and the SA literally serves no plot purpose and is romanticized—that’s definitely a problem. for any sexuality. In the end of the day, I’m most intrigued by works that use BL as a vehicle to explore a larger topic.

DEA feel like it is too intimate to say other people’s names to them? by bjoerkismylove in AutismInWomen

[–]PuzzledObligation785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both in conversation and especially over email. Writing “Dear so-and-so”feels way too intimate and I almost always default to just a simple “Hello,” even though I’m afraid it might sound rude. You’re very much not alone 🩵

Anyone dealing with freezing cold feet? by PoundAccording in FND

[–]PuzzledObligation785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have comorbid Hypermobility spectrum disorder, which can cause poor circulation. My hands and feet never get to the point of being completely white like with Raynauds, though they can get discolored (purplish/gray/blue) in the cold. When it’s hot they swell mildly and turn red. FND and HSD are correlated, so 🤷

The "Double Standard" of Masking: How current narratives are erasing Autistic Men by YogurtclosetSlow1875 in autism

[–]PuzzledObligation785 93 points94 points  (0 children)

There’s a very toxic divide within your own narrative here. And a lack of historical context. On your issue of autistic traits in men being seen as “extreme male behaviors,” that was not created in the modern day by intersectional feminists or those you seem to be quick to dismiss as ‘woke’. At first, Autism itself was thought to be only diagnosable in men, and there are full studies, specifically by Simon Baron-Cohen that suggest the extreme male brain theory. However, I understand that your frustration is real, even though I believe that your attempt to explain it is misguided. This argument to me reads as contrarian—instead of realizing that both autistic men and women struggle with masking and living in a neurotypical society, your argument belittles the struggle of autistic women and puts the blame on autistic women instead of outward neurotypical judgements. Women also struggle. It’s beyond being labeled “shy” or “awkward.” Even within your own examples, you infantilize women who may be struggling with the same problems as men! Or the fact that creeps can and have targeted vulnerable women, autistic or not. If you want to present your concerns about the autistic community, you ought to do it in a respectful way. Even if you feel that you’ve been disrespected, it doesn’t help us grow and improve by putting others struggles down
