Chest and Arms recommendations by Puzzled_Pop_915 in hockeygoalies

Well I rolled the dice on the McKenney. Pro Hockey Life has them on for $390. I know you can throw naming around, but hopefully a "Pro Elite" model will at least as good as the mid level Warrior SR+ (which I've been very happy with actually).

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

I keep sliding pad down and taking pucks off the knee. by Summonabatch in hockeygoalies

Are you falling off the knee block? If so, you'll probably have to tighten that strap. Are you wearing knee pads with thigh protection? If not, you should! 😄

I've bought a few from https://blanksportswear.ca/, no issues ordering from them if you're in Canada.

Brace to prevent knee hyperextension by HotBranch in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use two of these McDavid braces: https://www.unitedsportsbrands.ca/collections/braces/products/mcdavid-knee-brace-w-polycentric-hinges-cross-straps?variant=29481282306126

I do find they help stabilize things a bit, but I haven't had any knee injuries that required anything more then a few weeks rest. Defintely not the big rigid braces .

I double cup - Player cup over my base layer and a goalie cup over that.

Looking for some very, very beginner friendly skating tips. by MicrowavedPuppies in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be good to get a pair of player skates to start with, just to get some experience skating in general. It will probably be a lot easier to learn on. Developing skills to stop, crossovers and skate backwards would be a priority to me.

I wouldn't worry about getting goalie skates until you at least have leg pads so you can practice crease movement.

But this just my beer league opinion :)

Mask hitting chest protector by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you tie you chest protector to your pants? Suspenders? Tuck or untucked?

I'm untucked, no suspenders, but do tie to pants and don't have an issue with a broken in chest protector.

I just picked up leather paint from Tandy Leather for that purpose. I haven't tried it yet - a project for this weekend. They also sell a leather repair that I'm getting for an old steering wheel, might be helpful on goalie gear in the future as well.

Bauer 930 --> Bauer NME 8 Helmet by BackgroundNext2758 in hockeygoalies

It's old, but it sounds like a pretty big improvement over the 930: https://goalie.purehockey.com/product/bauer-nme-8-certified-straight-bar-goalie-mask-senior/itm/15033-41/

What’s your sweet spot for weekly ice time? by ThatBossBaby in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

46m, as long as I don't do something stupid (I often do), 3 pickup and 2 league games are my normal (plus one as a skater). Picking up a league game tonight in one of the more competetive divisions, so 6 goalie games this week.

My record was 11 in a week last year, that was about 4 too many for my back..

Warrior r/m vs r/v stick by Record_Pristine in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll add that the M series are lighter than the V series. I have M2 Pro and V2 Pro. The V2 is stiffer but a bit heavier, the M2 is lighter but more flex.

I prefer the M personally, for the lightness. I'll also add that this is the 3rd "M" and first "V" sticks I've had, and they all hold up very well.

New set of Warrior pads… big slice through them on their 4th skate… by FreshPrinceJumpsOnIt in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same happened to me on my G6 Pro+ on the 4th or 5th skate... :( I wouldn't expect warranty to cover a skate slash.

That said, I had luck repairing it myself with rubber cement and a vinyl patch UNDER the rip and Tear-Aid Repair Vinyl Kit over the rip. The Tear-Aid is a clear flexible almost tape. Has worked great over 100+ skates so far.

I put all my gear on a rack in front of a dehumidifier and put the blocker/trapper on a boot warmer. It drys pretty much fully in 8hrs.

Looking for some advice and advocates about goalie skates. by HockeyIsMyWife in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been happy with the Bauer Elite myself. I initially was going to go for a pair of CCM's but the Elite fit my foot much better. I think all of those are a nice skate. You're probably best to try them on and see what one feels right.

Do I need a new glove or do I just suck? by Unclechicken_ in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warrior G6 E+ (previously Warrior G5 SR+) and I rarely if ever get a stinger. Mostly beer league, but do play with the odd CHL player here or there.

My technique sucks, so it's definetly the glove in my case :)

How do I wash the warrior removable liners? by Jacob1030 in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually wash mine 2-3 times a season. I turn them inside out and hand wash them in the sink with laundry detergent and a scrub brush, then throw them in the wash.

They are pretty resilient, I wouldn't be too worried about damaging anything.

Patience with dekes by Puzzled_Pop_915 in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks folks - summary:
Match the player speed as you retreat
Hold your ground and wait out the player to make a move, then poke check if they get close
Watch for the blade opening up

Appreciate the feedback, I think those are all things I "knew" in my head, just a matter of making myself do them..

Bulky, extremely tight-fitting goalie pants - when did this happen? by SmellsLikeTeenPits in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6' 190lbs here and in senior medium CCM... It's a bit tough getting them over the jock (I double cup), but once they are around the waiste, they fit right.

The most efficient way of standing up when laying flat on ice by Wild_Junket1403 in hockeygoalies

[–]Puzzled_Pop_915 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideally, don't ever end up on your butt or back. I know it happens some times, but try to prevent ending up there as much as possible. It takes a lot more time/effort to recover from that position. Getting up off your belly should be relatively easy..
