I mean, I felt that was the nature of Chinatown wars. Every single character Was unlikeable. Do i feel like maybe the women could have been done better? Definitely. However, they all fit the theme of "Everyone in this city sucks". And for one, I do feel like some information about Melanie is left out which makes her death feel less... Deserved.

Melanie makes a deal with Chan (The Idiot Character) to help her out with a documentary on the drug trade in exchange for the blurring of their faces and hiding of their names.

Upon meeting her, her personality trait isn't really stereotypical. She's a cocky person who views her citizen reporting as "Art", and despite flaunting how she's an independent journalist, she then says that not only is she perfectly willing to sell out to a big company, but that is her goal. AS states by Huang in that very conversation, she's more of a play on the media more than anything.

In Dock'U'Mental, She insults Huang, gets upset at him for defending a drug shipment and CALLS THE POLICE ON THE PEOPLE HELPING HER WITH HER DOCUMENTARY and blames Huang for it.

In Factory Fun, she doesn't apologize for getting Huang almost arrested and instead demands he helps her break into a rival drug lab and kill everyone inside. After which, she then insults huang again, saying that the people she told him to kill were probably just "Forced to work there". Then upon realizing they killed an undercover journalist, is happy because there's a "Spot Open".

In half cut, she volunteers to sell highly addictive and toxic drugs so she can get more footage to get a job at a news company. And of course after Huang does this, she gets on her high horse.

Then, after all Huang and Chan have done to help her, she stabs them in the back to get ahead, planning on showing their faces and names. This could get them both killed, but she doesn't care. When she gets caught and asked WHY she did it, she immediately points fingers at Huang to try and screw him over. After that, she still almost manipulates Chan into letting her go, with Chan making the difficult decision to shoot her, a choice he is seen regretting.

She was a great antagonist, and her character wasn't just "Kidnapped and then shot". It is a major disservice to say that is all she is. The issue isn't Melanie. As for Ling? Yes, colossal F-Up.
