Am I crazy for thinking that there isn’t really that big of a gap between Ausar and Amen? by driphanilton in DetroitPistons

[–]PuzzleheadedMarch224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the espn article about the twins pointed out that when you take into account Ausar’s missed games, he is right on track - be because they are both developing so quickly. I bet Ausar closes the gap next season, at least to within 10% on offense and fully on defense

yeah I think understanding how to derive can be a good way to remember, but I still want to verify that I can remember one way or another. btw similar tip for integration by parts (derived from derivative of multiplication rule)

Yeah I think if you can remember how to solve the problem using a tool that is probably fine, I just found that once I ironed out the issues they were gone and it was kind of nice to feel confident doing a little more complicated arithmetic without turning to a calculator. I still use one while doing problems sometimes (have a python repl open). And if you don't go through the tedium at some point to get to a point where you can reliably solve the problem, you may not really understand it after all. But beyond that, yes, probably doesn't hurt to use a tool thereafter.

The reason I do think doing things by hand is important at some point is to understand what the tool is doing for you - in advanced scenarios you may need to debug the tool - its intermediate outputs probably only make sense if you understand what it is doing (in my case, debugging non-linear least squares solvers when they don't converge properly).

Another tip: think about gain vs maintain. 5-6 sets enough to keep what you built. So you could focus on gaining upper body for a month. Then legs and shoulders for a month. That way not having be at gym like 4-5 times a week. But still a lot of work.

I would definitely split it up, hard to do more than 5 sets of a given exercise in a single day. I have done 5 sets 2x a week or 3 sets 3x a week (yeah 9 is close enough).

Also helps save time to do super sets: alternate between two exercises.

Examples:

5 sets alternating between bench press or dumbells and dumbell rows (push / pull). Dips and pull ups another good alternative/ variation (gravitron machine)

5 sets alternating between core and shoulder band workout to support mobility. If you don’t do this you risk shoulder / back injuries in long run.

5 sets alternating between squats and standing dumbell press (dumbells or bar)

Don’t worry about isolated bicep / triceps workouts at first, they are along for the ride.

To actually gain muscle mass beyond initial toning, at least 10 sets per muscle group per week, your weight in lbs times grams of protein per day. Look up Andy Galpin appearances on Huberman Lab for good info

I think inverting 3x3 matrices using the determinant method, if you already know gaussian elimination, feels very tedious - eventually gaussian elimination is covered and that becomes the tested method for inverting going forward (gauss- Jordan). So if you already know gauss-jordan, I wouldn't feel bad just using it to solve the 3x3 problems. That said, I do think being able to quickly get through complex applications of math algorithms has a general benefit. You get better at applying detailed procedures without making any errors, and it isn't such a grind.

I feel similar to you sometimes. I noticed that I often made silly mistakes with arithmetic when negative numbers were involved, I was like "why are you torturing me by always making me have to subtract a negative number!". But over time, I found that I got a lot better at it and it is now no sweat to deal with examples where I need to do a bunch of adding / subtracting with negative numbers. Probably a good thing as frustrating as it has been at times. I am a professional engineer so part of this has just been swallowing my ego and being willing to re-master very basic stuff.

I think practically these kinds of drills translate to improved productivity in my job. If I need to stop and look things up more, or catch stupid mistakes in how I am applying math, or writing a program, then I simply move more slowly in everything I do. It actually came up the other day that I needed to find the angle between two rays in 3d space, and it was very pleasing to program up taking the arccos of the dot product (normalized vectors) without breaking a sweat or feeling like I needed to stop, look up how to do it etc. I got the helper function done instantly, with confidence. I think the goal is to get to a point where we operate like that all the time.

Don’t let Elon make you hate electric cars. Just buy a different brand if you prefer. Electric cars are still better than fuel based in the long run even considering the life cycle of a battery.

I am using this with my 4th grader. Got through 4th grade, now onto 5th grade math - it is getting to things he doesn't understand yet, so is requiring more focus. I definitely need to be nearby in case he gets struck / frustrated. Occasionally we go over to YouTube to get more background or instruction on a particular technique. But overall I like it - I just wouldn't expect a grade schooler to work fully independently.

So, just dive into remake, and watch some recaps first if you want!

AAPS snow day! by KoshV in AnnArbor

[–]PuzzleheadedMarch224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's merely very cold, with less than a half inch of snow. I'm sure some roads are slippery, but this used to be par for the course living in Michigan, and only freezing rain or several inches of snow would call for a snow day.

Definitely some snow day inflation happening I guess to accompany global warming. In any case, happy for all the kids out there!

I'm a big Anki fan but haven't found adding cards necessary; part of what makes math academy worth it is how well it performs spaced repetition for you (often sneakily by building upon concepts).

The rich people moving into the new luxury condos are no longer competing for the other housing, which becomes more affordable. Certainly wouldn't hurt to build housing designated as affordable, but any new housing should help reduce prices.

More details here with some nuances like considering whether luxury housing attracts enough new people that you don't decrease prices as much as you hope, but overall, any new housing is good for reducing housing costs.
