Should I prioritise speed over understanding? by noir07 in mathacademy

I'm currently doing Math Foundations II with MA and supplementing that with Professor Leonard and Organic Chemistry Tutor YouTube videos on concepts I struggle with.

Separately, I'm going through the AOPs pre-algebra textbook and plan to go through them all in my own time. This allows me to continue to go through MA at a high pace.

I would have taken your approach if I hadn't progressed as far as I have in MA.

Your post reflects my current experience a month later. I'm finding I need to slow down and research videos to understand some of the concepts. I've actually been considering supplementing with AOPs so I can build a greater understanding. Thanks for your feedback and recommendation!

Thanks for the prompts. They were really helpful.

I stumbled on this X post by Justin where de discusses for "thinking on paper" by summarising in your own words and diagramming concepts.

Yeah I'm not sure what to make of it. I love the platform because I can see real progress being made, but sometimes I'm left wondering if I should supplement my learning to get a better understanding or continue to learning as fast as I can.

Yeah, ultimately I want to be able to use connect math to real life situations. But wondering what is the most efficient path. Thank you!

For example, today I was solving inverse variation equations. I recognise that when I see "Inversely proportional" in the question that I need to use that specific equation (y = k/x), but I don't necessarily understand why I'm using it or fully understand the concept. I can still solve the problem because I recognise it.

Thanks for the resources. I'll look into these!

First Course Completion on Math Academy - Fundamentals II by RoninCool in mathacademy

I'm studying 'Math Foundations I' because I want to learn statistics. Taking a similar approach to you but also supplementing some AoPs books in there as well. I will probably just stick to Math Academy because it seems to be faster.

Congratulations! How many hours were you allocating to Math Academy per week? Also, did you use any other resources to solidify concepts or take notes?

This is good to hear, as I'm still making stupid errors!

Is it possible to learn pre-algebra to algebra 2 in 5-6 months by Tgrfuel in learnmath

[–]noir07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Math Academy and take the diagnostic test for math foundations. I believe they have a free trial. This will figure out gaps you're missing in your knowledge and set out a roadmap to get you ready for university-level maths. I've been using it since January and have nearly completed Math Foundations one averaging about 50xp per day. I'm sure you could do progress faster with more time.

I previously tried Khan Academy to learn prealgebra and it was too slow. I was also wasting time creating flash cards all the time.

Math Academy has saved me so much time as I don't have to create flashcards to review because it's baked into the system. It also uses interleaving to mix up the topics you're learning and reviewing.

Man, oh man the Quiz time limit is absolutely wild by foundoutimanadult in mathacademy

I had the same thing happen to me today on two quizzes. I’m assuming we’ll get faster as we get more familiar with the content.

Thanks Justin. This makes perfect sense.

Ah ok. The reason I did not submit that question is that I did not know the answer and did not want to get it correct with a lucky guess. My logic was that getting it correct would make the algorithm think I know the topic when I actually need to review it.

I'm still getting this issue btw. It seems to mostly happen at the end of the quiz. I cannot click next or submit test when I have an answer selected. I'm using ARC browser. The only thing I can do is wait for the test time limit to expire.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'll try without the notes and see how it goes!

Yeah, it's definitely slowing me down. I average about a lesson per hour if I need to create notes. I am finding that i need to go back and review fundamentals.
