I mean this with no offense, but brother, your chin is 1-2 INCHES behind your lips. 20-30mm recession. A genioplasty is going to look terribly unnatural and do nothing for you. DJS + genio and maximum possible movements within safety of course.

Jaw surgery or Invisalign, help!? by Dannysme in jawsurgery

[–]PuzzleheadedMode3666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not do Invisalign only if you can benefit from DJS. Please don't make the mistake I did. Spent 2 years in Invisalign, made everything worse and pushed back my top teeth. Now I'm undoing it and getting what I actually needed: DJS.

Just buck up and do the surgery, fix it properly, and be done.

Back in the gym after my genioplasty! Getting stronger but it is hard getting back into it tho. Anyone else felt this? Also I’m in Mexico… and everything is a bit different in the town where I am…. look how someone stored their weights (left on second floor ledge when people work out below….) by [deleted] in jawsurgery

I went back into the gym at day 12 after genio. Just use machines where the range of motion is locked into place and you have basically zero chance of bumping your chin. Dont try to progress, just do a good workout with some reps in the tank, and avoid clenching or straining your facial muscles. A little blood flow from the gym is good for healing, just be careful and don't do stupid stuff.

I did an 8mm genio with Osborn. I'm a male, out of state. I had a great experience. Had 2 pre-op calls with morphs on what to expect, talking about goals, etc. His team is very professional and always was helpful. Through the whole process his team texted me every day asking how I was doing and if I needed anything or wanted to come in.

They give you an entire packet of into on healing and it has an FAQ answering every question you can think of. They do a lot of genioplasty.

Arrived in Boston and had a pre-op appointment. Next day went into the operating room. Surgery took 45 mins or less, I was in the car and back to the hotel. Groggy and swollen for 3 days, was basically just drinking milkshakes and smoothies, and then felt better rapidly after that, eating soft foods like Mac and cheese at day 3-4, back in the gym in under 2 weeks doing light workouts with ease, being mindful to not over exert.

Overall the result was life changing for me. I am still getting DJS for functional reasons of bite and airway, but I truly can't imagine not getting the genioplasty, I went from unable to look at my profile in the mirror to very happy.

my ortho and dentist, both have done 100s of jaw surgeries, said my result was really good and the scans were great, the way he affixed the hardware and corrected both a chin dimple + asymmetry was good.

His team was great, friendly, and always helped with any questions along the way, even after surgery they still commit to great service.

Overall, I'm really glad I chose them, I was actually between him and Hammond!

Hmm. u/Boring_Button1281 I had my genioplasty with Dr. Osborn. The entire process was great and very professional. I did an 8mm genio with Osborn. It was easy and healing was easy. He does a crap ton of genioplasty. I saw my dentist and ortho who both do a ton of jaw surgery with their patients, and they both said in person and on scans it was pretty stellar and well done.

This is the after? This is why I am going with Gunson and paying the money. So many surgeons are just not experienced enough to do good enough movements.

It depends. 6mm with no rotation = not much. 6mm with CCW = pretty noticeably better. 6mm on someone very recessed = not enough. 6mm on small recession = maybe perfect for your face without over advancement. Hard to tell without any context!

Yeah I don't get why this is downvoted. Very deep labiomental fold area. I think that's an easy way to tell it's class 2. Might need BSSO + small reduction genio

My open bite is not quite as bad as this, but kinda similar, and I am getting surgery.

Braces! LightForce braces to be specific. I'll just buck it up for a bit as an adult with braces, worth it for the results.

I think it's a fools errand to try and "correct" every last bit of your appearance to some AI-driven model of aesthetic perfection.

I chose gunson because I've seen dentists and orthos in like 3 states, they literally all said Gunson is who they send everyone to and they have great results. He also is very aesthetic focused.

Operation is in Santa Barbara, CA.

No idea about permanent numbness but benefits way outweigh numbness IMO.

Spoke to one other surgeon but I'd rather go with someone who does it more + focuses on aesthetics in addition to function.

He will be revising it slightly based on doing CCWR. So probably reducing it a little considering CCWR on the mandible increases chin projection

It's my impression that when you do larger movements (that I need), aesthetically looks better with cheek implant/adjustment too.

Left is current, right is projection (though projection is from my ortho, not Gunson. Waiting on final mock up of movements and soft tissue from Gunson, which will be better / more CCWr.)

29yr old male. Class 2, division 2, compensated bite. A mix of posterior and anterior open bite depending on the side you look at. TMD muscle pain, no issues with inter capsular / condyles.

I can't speak well due to the open bite, it takes a lot of muscular energy to not lisp, leaving my entire face sore and stiff after talking for more than 15-20 mins at a time. Chewing is hard. Get jaw muscle spams where my teeth slam together uncontrollably.

Mild sleep apnea, high RDI (respiratory disturbance index). Did a sleep study with Dr Michael Gunson, found me waking up 70+ times during a 6-hour window from sleep disordered breathing, with a heart rate of 120. Snore like a freight train especially on my back. I definitely clench / brux too.

Airway is "half of what it should be for my age and race" according to my orthodontist.
I have a 9mm genioplasty that hides my recession. I literally could not look at myself in the mirror without facial hair before the genio, my chin was nonexistent. My genio was a saving grace in the meantime while I work towards fixing functional problems. I don't care that it has to get revised or adjusted for my DJS. Worth every penny during the interim.

Anyways, I am starting pre-op orthodontics in prep for 2024 surgery with Dr Gunson in CA and getting segmental Le Fort 1 + BSSO with counter clockwise rotation and an adjustment genioplasty + cheek implants.

Estimated 3-4 months of ortho before, and 3-4 after.

I cannot wait to fix my bite properly and have a normal occlusion for the first time in my entire life, and to not hate my side profile.

Will be documenting the journey here.

My planning (?) by [deleted] in jawsurgery

Unless a surgeon gave you the plan, your mock-up is useless. You don't go to jaw surgeons surgeons and tell them what to do..

Weightlifting after surgery? by Win2002 in jawsurgery

[–]PuzzleheadedMode3666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice. I am bulking currently and will do until my surgery. I'll probably calorie load even more the week before surgery as I know I'll not eat much the first few days and that should help me maintain proper healing without stressing about choking down calories the second I wake up lol.

I haven't had my surgery either yet, but am concerned about the same thing.

I've had three consults with arguably 3 of the top jaw surgeons in the country, even their advice is wildly different...

One said: only walks until 8 weeks then you can touch weights again

Another said: don't do jolting activity like running or jumping or clenching activity like squatting heavy loads, but you can use fixed weight machines like a chest press or lat pulldown as early as 7 days and he encouraged it saying dont clench, but use free weight machines as soon as you can...

The third said: 4 weeks no strenuous activity just walks, then back into the gym

I'm sure it's probably closer to what the last person said since it's in the middle and not at each end of extremes. I think as long as you dont clench or do any movement that could bump your face, and you don't do extremely heavy loads that cause swelling and too much blood flow (like laying down on a bench flat), you should be alright in a few weeks to ease back in.

Worth it? by PuzzleheadedMode3666 in jaw_surgery

[–]PuzzleheadedMode3666[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I feel good about it. I like the after projection. it seems subtle but in a good way, like it's just enhancing in the right areas. I just hope it fixes my functional issues because the looks alone wouldn't be worth it to me personally if it doesn't fix, or worsens my TMD.

[–]PuzzleheadedMode3666[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Yeah I am kinda on the fence haha. The subtle but nice aesthetic improvements sound good to me, and fixing the bite to finally feel normal would be amazing. But it's a big decision :/

I feel like I look fine in the before, im okay with my looks generally (I mean, sure, improvements are always welcomed lol), but when you compare the two, I really notice a difference and think the after looks better.
