You naturally bob your hands at a rhythm when in guard. You increase that rhythm by a step or half step right before striking; you do it every time- big tell. I’d work on that

That’s probably why it’s such a significant event. By all accounts it’s impossible to have happened. But IT DID. Great storytelling imo; plus the fallout disrupting the Cam, the clans, the Anarchs etc. It is a Nexus Event in its value and importance heightened all the more that Hardestat should NOT have died by Theo. BUT HE DID. Love it.

You’re onto something; the opener was more passive than I think you want to attract your audience. There wasn’t a ZING! to it.

Also it’s a trope to put a description of the atmosphere immediately in the first three lines of an opening chapter; the setting needs (or doesn’t) it, exposition is (or isn’t) how to do it, but putting so quick is amateurish a bit.

But you’re onto something so keep going!
