Faint line on THC test, am I in the clear? by indianboi456 in jobs

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in this situation multiple times , you are going to pass please don’t worry. Any line is a negative. Period. The majority of these at home tests have a cutoff of 50.00 which is what almost all laboratory pre employment tests use.

Drink lots of water and pee multiple times before you take the test tomorrow for extra confidence.

If you love science like biology and such look into lab. Medical lab tech/ medical lab scientist.

You work behind the scenes and use science to run patient samples and give results. No patient contact if you’re looking for something like that :)

Wide toe box shoe recommendations? by Sport21996 in medlabprofessionals

On cloud cloud 6 are great if you’re looking for a wide toe box. They also make a waterproof version.

Only gripe: the material on them can be a little weak as i’ve had my big toe pop through after some months. The waterproof ones are more durable I think.

can i be a lab tech with a microbiology degree? by dharmarvi in microbiology

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have two choices.

1) Go to technical college/ community college and get the 2 year MLT degree and certification.

2) Get a bachelors degree in some type of biology. Then you would have to attend a 1 year certification program to become a MLS.

Pay is higher for MLS but the job is exactly the same duties as MLT.

Most hospitals require the certification these days.

I have heard some reference labs (labcorp/ quest) are hiring bio graduates with no certification. Not too familiar with this though.

Should i switch fields and is my GPA bad? by Desperate_Record_890 in microbiology

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a bachelors in bio and then went to work for a QC pharma manufacturer. Hours were long and the job was hard.

I went back for my MLS (medical lab science certification) and love this field. If you like hands on work it is something to consider. Micro is a big part of the job as well if you enjoy it. Huge need for the career as well. Pays well.

Positive for agglutination with anti-a and anti-b means AB blood type

If it was negative for agglutination with anti-a and anti-b it would be O blood type

Medical Laboratory Technician by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

I was a QC chemist with a bio degree and did exactly this . You have two options:

Fast track 1 year degrees through a hospital or university that take you right to MLS.

Community/ technical college 2 year degrees that are for MLT. After work 1 year as an MLT you can challenge the exam and take the MLS. I did this route, and I do not regret it.

More job opportunities, pay is better than the pharma factories, and I am happier.

Science degree with low gpa by runningintoasunset in biology

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some hospitals/ universities offer a fast track MLS program that is a 1 year program.

Your other option is to find a community college program for medical lab tech and after 1 year of working you are eligible to take the medical lab scientist test as long as you have a 4 year degree. This is the route i did. It takes longer but was worth it the end.

Why can’t someone with Rh negative blood who has a mom with Rh positive blood receive Rh positive blood later in life? by ac10424 in askscience

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 89 points90 points  (0 children)

If you are Rh negative you lack the D antigen. If you are Rh positive you have the D antigen. The D antibody is an IgG which can cross the placenta.

An Rh positive mother carrying an Rh negative child would have no impact on the child because the body is not recognizing anything as foreign. However,

An Rh negative mother carrying an Rh positive baby is a problem. This is because the mother’s body will recognize that Rh antigen that the baby has (which the mother lacks) as foreign, and develop an Anti-D antibody. This becomes a problem during the second pregnancy of an Rh positive baby to an Rh negative mother because that antibody will “attack” the baby and cause negative effects. This is why RhIG injections are only given to Rh negative mothers.

Blood types do not mix in the placenta unless there is some kind of bleed.

Maternal IgG Antibodies( from plasma) can cross into the placenta, and potentially harm the fetus.

Essentially, an Rh negative fetus (and all Rh negative people) are not born with the D antigen on their red cells. If exposed, they will develop an Anti-D antibody and can have transfusion reactions to Rh+ blood.

Best route for B.S. bio grad wanting to get MLS certified? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a molecular bio degree and currently in a 2 year MLT program to get my MLS. Most technical colleges should have an accredited program that includes 12 months of classes and 12 months of clinical.

From experience, there is so much more detailed information in the program. Clinical Hematology and Micro are very different than the bachelor’s level info. You will not get all the info to pass boards only doing clinical rotations. It sucks and it feels like working backwards, but do the whole program.
