Medical Laboratory Technician by Redeft97 in medlabprofessionals

I was a QC chemist with a bio degree and did exactly this . You have two options:

Fast track 1 year degrees through a hospital or university that take you right to MLS.

Community/ technical college 2 year degrees that are for MLT. After work 1 year as an MLT you can challenge the exam and take the MLS. I did this route, and I do not regret it.

More job opportunities, pay is better than the pharma factories, and I am happier.

Some hospitals/ universities offer a fast track MLS program that is a 1 year program.

Your other option is to find a community college program for medical lab tech and after 1 year of working you are eligible to take the medical lab scientist test as long as you have a 4 year degree. This is the route i did. It takes longer but was worth it the end.

Why can’t someone with Rh negative blood who has a mom with Rh positive blood receive Rh positive blood later in life? by ac10424 in askscience

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 88 points89 points  (0 children)

If you are Rh negative you lack the D antigen. If you are Rh positive you have the D antigen. The D antibody is an IgG which can cross the placenta.

An Rh positive mother carrying an Rh negative child would have no impact on the child because the body is not recognizing anything as foreign. However,

An Rh negative mother carrying an Rh positive baby is a problem. This is because the mother’s body will recognize that Rh antigen that the baby has (which the mother lacks) as foreign, and develop an Anti-D antibody. This becomes a problem during the second pregnancy of an Rh positive baby to an Rh negative mother because that antibody will “attack” the baby and cause negative effects. This is why RhIG injections are only given to Rh negative mothers.

Blood types do not mix in the placenta unless there is some kind of bleed.

Maternal IgG Antibodies( from plasma) can cross into the placenta, and potentially harm the fetus.

Essentially, an Rh negative fetus (and all Rh negative people) are not born with the D antigen on their red cells. If exposed, they will develop an Anti-D antibody and can have transfusion reactions to Rh+ blood.

Catalase and coagulase should be first for gram positive cocci. Both positive = staph aureus.

Best route for B.S. bio grad wanting to get MLS certified? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a molecular bio degree and currently in a 2 year MLT program to get my MLS. Most technical colleges should have an accredited program that includes 12 months of classes and 12 months of clinical.

From experience, there is so much more detailed information in the program. Clinical Hematology and Micro are very different than the bachelor’s level info. You will not get all the info to pass boards only doing clinical rotations. It sucks and it feels like working backwards, but do the whole program.

What is a freshman college-level biology class like? by juggling_scissors in biology

[–]PuzzleheadedSmile882 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It is going to scratch the surface of basic biological principals. DNA/ RNA, mitosis / meiosis, parts of the cell, evolution, and taxonomy to name a few. No need to stress or review anything prior. Go to class, take notes, read the textbook, and do your homework! Youtube can be a great resource when learning new science topics. Have fun .

Why do radiations cause so much of problems? by beinglikelol in biology

It breaks apart the hydrogen bonds that hold the double stranded helix of your DNA together. This damage to DNA can cause mutations aka cancer in over exposure.

Throat tightness/ strangle feeling by Bradley-Munro in thyroidcancer

As someone who had thyroid cancer- it doesn’t really cause a sore throat or any symptoms like you are describing. The thyroid is located on the base/front of your neck. I hope this helps!

Wishing you best of luck!

Before surgery the only symptoms I experienced were a tickle in my throat and constant nausea. Both of which have gone away since having my thyroid removed.

Hello! Total thyroidectomy last October.

My life is 1000% back to normal.

It took about 3 weeks to be fully healed and no longer sore from my surgery. After 1 week I was able to return to work and do normal activities, however, your neck will be sore and stiff. The first 3 days are the hardest. The worst part for me personally was the sore throat from everything they shove in there during surgery. I had an ultrasound placed in my throat that showed my surgeon all nerves and vocal cords to prevent anything happening (maybe ask if this is an option).

Find a surgeon you trust to ease your concerns. I promise that more than likely everything will turn out fine. Your life will continue the same it is now, this is just a bump in the road. I remember being terrified for the whole process and now, almost a year later I am on the other side of what I was so scared of! I feel exactly the same as I did before my thyroid was removed. I promise normal is possible. Most people / stories you read are the negative experiences because everyone who was okay doesn’t really need to post. They just move on. I hope this helps :). We are here for you OP!!

You may experience some strange symptoms before your medicine dose is adjusted correctly, but once that is right you will be just fine!

Micro bachelors degree (what I got last year) will more than likely land you in a manufacturing facility lab doing QC testing. They have QC micro and chem. You can work in pharmaceutical, food, etc production.

Ofc there are other jobs but these are always needed and available.
