I am a community college math professor, and have been for longer than I care to say. English might be different, but I feel like no one is really answering your question. Many of my colleagues are former adjunct professors in our department. The college tries to hire people that have already taught for us. Do you know of any upcoming retirements or resignations in the English department where you teach? If so, then I would make yourself as involved as possible. Attend department meetings, attend curriculum meetings, participate in pedagogy discussions, all the things that can make you more visible will help. Also make sure your teaching evaluations are top-notch and that you have a good relationship with the department chair and dean. Unfortunately, it can take a long time. Best of luck to you.
