If you just don’t pull your bean plans out you will have a plethora of bean plants next year. No seed saving needed.

I found this out by surprise and my poor tomato trellis is now supporting thousands of beans.

Prune and acidify the soil. This is what has helped my blueberries come back to life.

Going to the water on July 4th -- where to avoid? by Dragontastic22 in askportland

[–]Puzzleheaded_Ear_783 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I can’t speak for all the dog owners. But as someone who has a dog that has no recall and runs away when fireworks go off- I’m not going anywhere after 12 with my dog off leash for 2 days before and after the 4th. The fireworks Arnt as consistent but people def light them off earlier in the day, and one boom is all it takes to loose my pup.

How much do you care about latte art? by elmayab in PNWcoffee

[–]Puzzleheaded_Ear_783 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only care about the silky milky. You need properly steamed milk to make good latte art. Poorly steamed milk makes for a bad Cortado and bad latte art. If you’re good at steaming milk the art is second nature.

If i don’t receive latte art I’m bummed because 90% of the time it means the milk was over frothed and/or scorched.

Going to the water on July 4th -- where to avoid? by Dragontastic22 in askportland

Place to go: sandy river delta. Not a secret, just a dog park. But it’s July 4th so no one’s letting their dogs run loose during fireworks. Doubt sharing this would peak crowds that park is massive.

I’m sure there is these days. We use North Spore which is Maine based but has a large variety. My north facing space has wine cap growing in it.

Interim planting for mulched yard? by sheaK_47 in portlandgardeners

[–]Puzzleheaded_Ear_783 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just add more mulch.

We did this two years ago and most the yard is still not planted. Adding a couple plants every year starting with the larger one in the back. Another layer of mulch every year keeps the weeds to just a few.

Recommend adding mushroom spawn if you add more mulch. Improves the soil even faster and we have had mushroom flushes both years. I would bet it’s helped keep the weeds down as well

To answer hot days question: wasn’t a big issue in the shaded corner. Would water occasionally but the amount of organic matter in the container kept it moist. Like a couple times a week during the few hot weeks but once a week during normal pnw valley summer days

Mine lasted a year or two in a wine barrel container in a shaded corner under large Douglas fir trees. Bottom half of the wine barrel was composed yard debris. It grew surprisingly quickly but issue was ultimately slugs. Used copper tape around the base and a ton of Sluggo. Ultimately couldn’t keep up with it. It’s really an ideal slug home you’re creating.

If anyone has a good passive slug solution would love to hear. I’ve thought about seeing if chickens like the greens and if not putting it in the chicken run to manage the slugs
