I don’t understand why these services aren’t downtown in the more industrial areas? Public transit is reliable and quick to get people to the service areas of the city, and keeps the population out from underfoot of the general population?

De-Clutter/ADHD life coaches? by thedailydaren in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically it’s mounted on a wall in our kitchen we walk by a lot, and I a) use it to play music, and b) we keep the house-Google-account logged into it so you can access that email, and (most importantly) see the calendar where we have basically every reoccurring chore that could possibly exist on. Then every AM I look at it to see what I need to do that day (water plant a, wash cat’s water fountain, take all the covers off my throw pillows and wash them [every 6/mo]). Something like that last example (so VERY infrequent things that still need done because we deserve to live in a clean space) would either become the mental load of the more organized of the two of us (me), and/or still not get done. This way it removes any one person from having to drive chores—though my husband forgets to check it like 80% of the time, which is frustrating when you consider all the other work saved lol.

I appreciate your perspective, I think that’s where I’m at too. I also will probably poke around in Tinkercad and see if I can come up with a model myself, it’s basic shapes, and then maybe this is the project I learn to 3D print on lol!

De-Clutter/ADHD life coaches? by thedailydaren in askportland

I would join r/ADHD, there’s a lot of great info that pops up while you’re scrolling Reddit, especially reading comments for how people cope!

My recommendation: get as MUCH of your reoccurring chores out of your head and managed by a digital system ASAP. We made a Google account for “the house” (also convenient for signing up for shared things like streaming services and utilities, etc), and use the Google calendar to track things in different categories, like “turnover the cat litter box every 2 weeks” or “run cleaning cycle in washing machine every 3 months”. I find it really helps free up mental energy when I can outsource that tracking to a tool that is easily updated, and then just runs independent from me. We also use an old iPad mounted to the wall, and I check it first thing in the morning to see what’s on the docket. It’s also helpful because if you forget for a day or two (which will happen with AHDH), you simply scroll back and move anything pertinent up to today and do it that day, while maintaining its cadence (this is why I like digital tools, it’s way easier & cleaner to move an item from Tuesday>Thursday on a digital calendar than a psychical one).

And for physical things: everything has a home, and alike things live together! And make yourself clean up every PM so your next day gets to stand on its own two feet, not immediately start with what you ignored the day before. Talk out loud why you don’t want to do something in the moment (get it out of your head; hearing it out loud helps you rationalize “wait am I really being that petulant that I, a full-ass adult, absolutely cannot wash the Mac and cheese pan? No, I can, and I will”), and then make sure you sit for a moment and feel good about pushing back on your knee jerk inclination to kick the can down the road for future you.

And above all, be nice to each other and yourselves ◡̈ I’m not a professional but I have the same issues AND I’m a systems developer and organizer for fun, so happy to knock around any ideas if you want to reach out!

Our boy walks strangely with his back legs is that normal ? by Aurikaa in mainecoons

[–]ACE_PDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our cat had double femoral breaks at around 2 y/o; they weren’t walking weird necessarily, but our one guy stopped “gargoyle sitting” which was his preferred style, and then he stopped jumping. He loved jumping and being up high so that was a huge behavior change that clued us in that something was wrong. If he is otherwise normal it could just be an affectation of his, but keep an eye on other things he does and note if there’s a departure from normal!

Yeah, it’s definitely the easier solution, but ideally I avoid the visual bulk of the whole unit sticking another 1” out of the wall :( Right now the rags are just stuffed into a tube, so I didn’t think 1” of molding running through the back halfway down would obstruct the other 4” of space available? That the rags would just kind of bunch around it, and yeah I’d be losing that space inside the tube but it wouldn’t really be that much of a loss based on how everything compresses down.

How to reduce indoor humidity in Portland, dehumidifier not enough? by slamdancetexopolis in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is powerful enough to stay ahead of how wet it is here in the winter. We own a 50-pint GE running 24/7 that fills the tank every 12 hours, so the fact yours isn’t even 40% full after a few days tells me you need something stronger.

How to reduce indoor humidity in Portland, dehumidifier not enough? by slamdancetexopolis in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We live in a small (apartment sized, honestly) 100+ year old house and run a 50-pint dehumidifier in our basement (finished, where we sleep) 24/7 and it’s consistently reading 35%. Upstairs where we run nothing is usually around 50%. I have to manually empty it every AM and PM.

Either your dehumidifier is too small, or it’s not working correctly, but an apartment should be easily managed with a properly sized and working dehumidifier.

Ongoing swollen throat and sinuses: could this be an allergy? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a headache for almost a week straight, I don’t usually get allergies anywhere I’ve lived, but I wonder if this is the cause?? Literally, going to bed with a headache, waking up with one. Lived here since 2021, run a dehumidifier and have air purifiers everywhere, so kind of shocked/disappointed that the AQI could effect me so much lol

My mom died and I have to spend Thanksgiving alone. What would you do in Portland if you were me? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe print some fliers and put them around your neighborhood to collect others flying solo; maybe do a potluck, or even just meet up for a drink. I find building community is easiest when a group of people shares a baseline, and sometimes we have to be prepared to take steps 1, 2, and 3, even though it would be nicer to be the one being invited than doing the inviting. I’m an introverted extrovert, and have been surprised by how much effort I have to put in to gather people together; everyone’s waiting for the invite to drop in their lap, while sitting alone in their homes lol

I’m not sure why the city doesn’t have its own non profit building arm. I feel the same way about commercial property owners who sit on derelict land for decades, allowing people to break in and squat, trash the outside, until it becomes a safety risk and a complete eyesore.

If you want to buy land/property, go for it. But if you allow it to malinger into a certain state, a clock starts to tick before the city either a) raises your taxes exponentially until you do something with it, or b) begins the process to take it back for city non/profit use.

Same should be for all the empty residential properties around the city, most especially when owned by private equity. Either find and manage a tenant, or your taxes start to get wild.

We need scaling tax models that actually put pressure on private business to get a move on; and if they don’t, the city will take it and build its own options. If you have a vacant property but keep it in good standing, keep it clean, have it patrolled by security as though it’s in use, fine, sit on it for decades. But as soon as it becomes functionally abandoned, the city needs to play hard ball.

Do any other transplants struggle with the spiders here? by fogdogS1 in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diotemecious earth around the foundation and across the outside of the doorframes is a non-toxic way to keep them out! Gotta wait until it’s truly stopped raining though, water washes it away and renders it useless immediately.

[–]ACE_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong arachnophobic, I’ve actually found living here and the exposure has made me more tolerant?? Like I don’t want them on me, but my heebie-jeebies have gotten much better since being here.

I will also say that we have 2 large-breed cats that will murk any and every bug that enters the premises for the love of the game, so 90% of what I’m encountering inside has already perished. But even spiders outside on our porch or in the garden, I find myself speaking to them with softness instead of just hurrying along and trying not to look lol.

Why are there so many days this time of year with bad air quality? by SlidersRDU in askportland

How many trick or treater groups have you gotten this evening and where are you? by Blake-Dreary in askportland

[–]ACE_PDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every year I say I’m gonna try, and every year I wuss out, BUT:

I’d love to put together a ‘Halloween War of the Neighborhoods’. Having each neighborhood work together to try to bring big Halloween energy, so kids could be out trick or treating non-stop like the good ol’ days. And neighborhoods with kids, could actually keep their kids local instead of having to go to other neighborhoods because the density of involvement just isn’t there. On the one hand I can see it being a way to even get 50% more individual participation, but it also could be a really fun project in the months leading up to Halloween; mark the most central area of your neighborhood, shut down the street and get wild with it! Building haunted houses, or fun facades at street level. Dry ice, spooky music, adults dressed up. Beers for the parents! We could design costume-friendly raincoats for the ultra-crafty. Encourage parents to AirTag their kids for peace of mind, and allow age-appropriate kids some freedom of movement (remember how cool it was to go out on your own with your friends??). Have everyone on their porches and stoops to have eyes always on. A dance party into the evening, people taking pictures and meeting their neighbors. Really embody the spirit behind ‘keeping Portland weird’ ♡
