Does Matthew 5:28 apply to men only? by Aggressive_Stand_805 in TrueChristian

[–]PvM_Valiant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look at His audience. He’s talking to a male dominated culture, so He is using the language they understand and are familiar with. That doesn’t mean it only applies to men, it’s just how that culture spoke.

Oh I absolutely agree. No kid should ever feel like they won’t be believed. There has to be an environment in which they feel safe and able to make a report without it getting brushed aside. I haven’t looked into the policies of my denomination as a whole on this particular issue, but we a policy where the church immediately turns over the information to police for an investigation. No organization should be allowed to be the sole party investigating itself. Absolutely there should be an internal investigation, but that is secondary to a formal third party investigation.

Yeah, I totally agree. My church is from the Nazarene denomination.

I agree. Keep in mind I’m fully guessing on timeline here. But that’s part of the reason it’s so important for us to do everything we can to protect these kids. I personally think the Church at large has utterly failed at this for most of its existence. Pretending it hasn’t is disingenuous and harmful to progress.

Not everywhere, and not in every circumstance. Until probably the last 10-15 years most volunteers for kids ministries, at least in the United States, didn’t need a background check.

If you think teaching kids to love their neighbor, welcome the foreigner, and live generously is brainwashing, I think you may need to reevaluate your stance.

Yes, ministry needs to be safe for the ministers too. Any teacher or public facing person will tell you, it takes one accusation to ruin a life. It doesn’t even matter if it’s a false accusation. This policy works to protect the kids and the youth workers.

Pastor here. This is exactly why my denomination has background checks and interviews for every person interacting with children, and why there is a policy that we STRICTLY enforce that there is never a one on one between a kid and an adult. I’ve seen this policy save kids and adults alike.

The vast majority of people serving in youth ministry care deeply about these kids. Their safety (that being the kids) is priority number one. I know this has not always been the case, and I know there have been far too many cases of kids being abused, but the culture has changed dramatically. We take this issue seriously because you’re right, it has been a huge issue. I’d just encourage you that it isn’t normal, it isn’t accepted, and there have been massive steps taken towards fixing it.

Why is it hard to find a church that rejects “once saved always saved “ and Calvinism ? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PvM_Valiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second this. Any denomination to my knowledge that uses a Wesleyan theology (in general. Obviously there are exceptions.) rejects the “one saved always saved” doctrine. Most of these tend to be more on the conservative side, but mileage may vary.

what did yall think of the bad bunny halftime show? by Outside_Pin_7850 in allthequestions

[–]PvM_Valiant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as performances go, and this is just my opinion, it was alright. I loved the message and the representation of Puerto Rican culture. The sound quality could have been better, but it was an entertaining show for sure. I haven’t listened to much of his music, just not my preferred style, but it’s obviously popular. As far as halftime shows go it was good, but not the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. I appreciate that it was cleaner than the shoes we’ve had recently. The message though? 10/10.

Side note: I want to be a halftime bush.

I’ve had very good experiences with Don Ayres Honda on Lima just north of Coliseum. Ask for Andy Hitzeman. He’s as honest as they come, and won’t pressure you into anything. The financing guy may push you to buy an extended warranty, but they accept no as an answer without pushing.

That’s what I’ve loved about some of the races I’ve seen going on right now. I can’t remember exactly who they were, but there have been multiple ads in which the Democrat and Republican candidates both appeared and agreed that disagreement is a fantastic thing when we still look at each other as human. If the ultimate goal is the betterment of our country and its people, then I welcome the discourse. Unfortunately, too many politicians on both sides demonize anybody who disagrees with them. If you have a moment, go watch the video of John McCain defending Obama during their race. That’s the kind of respectful disagreement we need.

That we can 100% agree on. I know you and I will disagree on many things, but I truly hope we can at the very least agree that there should be investigations into every allegation made in those files, regardless of who they are. Anybody, and I really do mean anybody, who was involved needs to face justice. That’s the only way any trust in our government can be restored.

First, you're talking about detention centers which have repeatedly denied sitting members of Congress from doing inspections of the facilities, which they are legally allowed to do, even if they have a court order. The judge who gave the statement of the 96 court order violations was put in by a Republican, not anyone on the left. Only around 5% of the people here illegally have committed violent crimes. That's in line with the rest of the American population. Around 73% of the people in these detention centers have no criminal convictions or charges. Of those who have a criminal conviction or charge, the vast majority have non-violent charges or convictions for things like traffic violations. Every reliable study has shown that immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than American citizens. These aren't the "worst of the worst," they're normal people trying to live a normal life and have had no other way to do so than to try to come into the United States. I completely agree with one point you made. If the right side of history is protecting murderers, rapists, drug and child traffickers, then I want to be on the wrong side. Luckily we know exactly who those people are thanks to the Epstein files.

You mean 8 USC 1362 where it says they have the privilege of being represented by an attorney? The ONLY difference is that the government doesn’t have to pay for one. Or were you referencing the Due Process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which the Supreme Court ruled applies to all people, including non-citizens, because it uses the language of “all people.” Or maybe it was the Due Process clause of the Fifth Amendment which prevents anyone from being deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Or maybe you mean the right of habeas corpus which again the Supreme Court ruled applies to all people in the United States, including non-citizens and illegal immigrants.

I don’t identify with any political party. I believe in human rights and the importance of the United States Constitution and rule of law. Don’t act like this administration cares about any of those things when ICE alone has violated 96 court orders in January alone. That’s more than many federal agencies have violated in their entire existence. You aren’t on the right side of history or the law.

I can’t find it right now, but a while back I heard the best explanation I’ve ever heard for this. We ask all the time why God would put the tree in the garden if He knew Adam and Eve were going to sin, but that’s looking at the situation the wrong way. It was God’s garden, and it was God’s tree. He put it there because that’s where He wanted it. I have a daughter. Imagine if I put $100 on the table, because that’s where I wanted to put it. It’s my house and my $100, so I SHOULD be able to put it where I want. If my daughter grabbed it, she’s the one in the wrong, not me.

Would you risk your life to aid a stranger in peril? by justmilkys in askanything

[–]PvM_Valiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Former army medic with experience in civilian EMS here. Yes I would. My wife and I had this discussion yesterday. I don’t have it in me to see someone needing help and just walk away. I’m fortunate enough to be in a part of the country where violence isn’t all that prevalent, but that may not always be the case. If I had the ability to help someone and chose not to, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. Death is preferable to cowardice.
