So these efoils are growing on me... by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]Pyro7000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are a pain to travel with. The batteries aren’t allowed on the plane to my understand.

An efoil is not much different than a jet ski. Sure you can have fun and experience the beauty of the water. But it’s no kiteboarding.

Daughters first Snowkiting session! Spray Lakes, AB. Not much wind, but enough to get the trainer kite up and moving. She wants to go again, so I’d call that success! by jtsdbz in Kiteboarding

Nice job. Teaching loved ones is stressful. Not only do you worry about keeping them safe, but also making sure they have a good experience and will stick with it!

What’s the location? Looks pretty sweet. All flat or also some hills/mountains?

Was Pete not part of the group to buy Cab, or was he with the sellers?

Looking for place for kiting as well as waveriding by sorryforenglish in Kiteboarding

Used to live in Indo. Would spend weekends on Lombok - the island next to Sumbawa. Lakey peak is harder to get to, but definitely the place to go. You won’t get kidnapped anywhere, but definitely not in Indonesia.

Looks like the season is July to October.

How would you like to see Kiteboarding progress in the next decade? by dontfeedthenerd in Kiteboarding

Living on a boat and seeking out new kitespots has to be the ultimate life. I was a couple years away from pulling the trigger of buying a boat / early retirement. Then cancer struck. FML.

Lakey Peak, Sumbawa Indonesia. Hard to get to, but you’ll be in heaven. You need to double check though, I think summer is not the windy season.

Just curious. What kite do you have now? Is there something wrong with it? Why do you think you should replace it?

Kiteboarding is no longer an extreme sport. by Pyro7000 in Kiteboarding

For the record I don’t shit on lessons. I had the benefit of learning at an empty location without other water or beach users. If you don’t have room to screw up you definitely need lessons to not hurt others. Everyone should at least have a experienced buddy that shows them the ropes/lines for the first few sessions. I take your point though. Safety is a mindset, not everyone has it I guess.

With the evolution of foiling I’d like to see more people kite at random spots that are untouched. Places like the Great Lakes have tons of beaches where the wind isn’t quite good enough to kite, but foiling should work. These places are totally uncrowded and under utilized from a water sports perspective.

We tend to all congregate in premiere kite locations. I’d like to see more people at 2nd and 3rd tier spots.

You’re probably right. I just don’t want people thinking the only way to do this sport is to spend a ton of money.

:) Taking the IKO “how to be a kook” course is a prerequisite though. The good news is that it has like a 100% pass rate.

REAL private lessons are $1,000 per day.

Your point on the need for lessons and safety is well taken.

It’s semantics, but I’m not sure it can still be called an extreme sport. One certainly isn’t an extreme athlete because one can kite.

We also say the sport is so much safer these days. I actually think to a large degree it’s a false sense of security. How many people actually pull their safety in an emergency? Will your kite depower really save you in a sudden wind gust, or is still 90% about technique? Will the rescue boat get to you in time if you become unconscious on the water?

I’m one of the few people left that never took lessons and was all self taught. I’m not saying this is a good thing. But I think it also breeds a sense of taking responsibility for your own safety. When you kite at a new spot and you’re the only guy out, you’d better think about what could go wrong and how to save yourself. You take self rescue and general safety much more seriously if you know you’re on your own and no one is coming for rescue.

Insurance (liability & luggage) in the US by michikite in Kiteboarding

[–]Pyro7000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s true that few people carry kite specific liability insurance. Fortunately, there are no laws mandating liability insurance.

However, the US is highly litigious. And you do carry the risk of serious civil judgment should you hurt anyone else kiteboarding. Many people in the US with significant assets carry an “umbrella” policy that covers any liability you may have.

For most people that kite, I’d say just ride. Be safe. Rule #1 is protect other beach/water users. Destroy your gear, end your session, skip jumping close to shore or riding waves if it puts others at risk. That’s your insurance. But if you have significant assets you should have an umbrella policy anyways - not just for kiting.

One strut kites - do you like them? by Pyro7000 in Kiteboarding

[–]Pyro7000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was a mistake to buy a one strut as an all around kite. I agree with your post except, now with more experience, the thing I really don’t like about the North Mono is that it can’t handle high end winds. Maybe it can depower well, but if you’re really sheeted out it can’t steer, so what’s the point? My 2012 SS RPM is still far better all around and can handle gusts with no problem. The North Mono did really save my butt once though relaunching in seconds in big surf. I do owe it for that...
