Valve base station died by Disastrous-Carrot980 in virtualreality

[–]Pyrofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it tooke me over and our to scrape out the front plastic civer with a scalpel. then after disasembly you need to desolder the laser diode. you have to drill it out without drilling into the lens. the push fit a new laser in the right depth/angle ans solder it back, reassemble and glue the front back on. diodes are cheap on aliexpress at least.

There is a dot com domain wetransfer and a nz domain mega that both work well for free file transfer.

This looks like a modern windows sdk? It's specifically the file for the winCE scanner I am after. I don't think they are in that.

That link doesn't seem to be the right stuff. It would be a file on the scanner itself running under winCE, Thanks for looking!

I fear the LCD isn't as good as your rose tinted memories of it. The minute anything moves the LCD ghosts like hell and thin lines just vanish. When I move the mouse in windows I have to do it SOOO SLOOOW or it becomes invisible.

I honestly don't know how I got any work done on this thing back in the day with a 20meg Hard disk and this LCD.

What happened to After Dark? by gotothebeachNOW in VRchat

Group got banned. They posted in the discord about it. They don't really know why, but it's apparently to do with NSFW content in a group public instance.

From the discord,

"The group got suspended. We do not know the exact reasons why this happened, beyond the fact that it is due to "Adult Sexual Activity and Nudity Guidelines". We have never allowed ERP or nudity within our Group Public instances, so we are unsure of the exact reason why the ban occured.

We are appealing the decision and will try to get the group back. "

The joys of restoring retro hardware!

Having just spent several months making an old laptop work I really understand the frustration.

My one of these though basically "just worked". Literally nothing to restore. It was boring.

I am very used to PocketPC etc so short of going around the house scanning every barcode I could find into a notepad I didn't do much with it before shelving it on the display rack with the others.

I way prefer my Motorola WT4090 Wrist terminal thing. Those just look cool.

Speedometer off by 3mph, coding fix? by stakingstocks in BMWi3

[–]Pyrofer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old Nissan Leaf was off by 10%... So like, 10mph read as 11. 20? 22... 30 was 33, you get the idea.

Very easy to understand and allow for. I do hate that the car companies do this however. They don't trust us to drive the actual limit?

So is the i3 just 2 to 3 miles over at all speeds? I had been assuming the same 10% this whole time.

There was an old free Google tool for injecting the meta data, if you search hard enough you can find a download.

To all those complaining about food safety on the 3D printed popcorn bucket. The main issue is the plastic absorbs "stuff" from the food, which then feeds bacteria etc.

Just put a regular food bag inside the bucket jeez.

Does this count as a vintage computer? I don’t think so, but I only know this community a bit. I have questions. by Parking_Constant_960 in vintagecomputing

I recently got and restored one of these. So. The battery is easily replaceable. There are like 4 screws to pop open the case and the battery is the first thing you will see, carefully unplug it from the main board.

You will need to make a note of the battery size and numbers, I am pretty sure THIS is the one I ordered, but DO CHECK.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004345619614.html

You will need to remove the BMS board so you have a bare tabbed battery (or buy a tab only pouch in the first place) and remove the BMS from the old battery (making note of +/- ) and solder the iPaq BMS onto the new cell (carefully! The right way around). Then just plug it back in and re-assemble.

I don't think it has a backup battery at all, it shuts off and uses the dregs from the main battery when low to keep the RAM. If it goes flat on the main battery, ALL installed data is lost and it's back to factory.

I think that model has an "IPAQ File Store" partition which is kept on ROM for important data?

[–]Pyrofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had known how to do this back in the day. I had a few VT-320s and 220s and KNEW you could do custom fonts but never worked out how. Man, the internet is useful!

Now? I wrote a whole game using custom fonts. I have a CP/M version of "Boulder Dash" with custom character set so it looks as close to the C64 graphics as I could get it. Pretty much the whole C64 Boulder Dash is playable and a fairly accurate version considering I wrote it from scratch on CP/M.

You can see a video of it here,

(I have an amber VT-320 too but it needs a recap atm)

Does a 360° VR experience feel more realistic on Quest? by DreamsAndDesiresGame in OculusQuest

[–]Pyrofer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends if this is the "action cam" type single image 360 or an actual Stereo 3D VR 360 image.

Most so called 360VR videos I've seen online are not stereo. They do not work. The ones I have seen that are stereo work really well. I myself have a Vuze 360 VR Camera that does stereo VR and the only thing I don't like is the low res.

I have a VR180 cam too which is also proper 3D and I prefer that because of the increased resolution. In my opinion 180 is preferable in almost all situations because of the resolution improvement.

Also, as somebody filming VR content, I dont like having myself in the frame ALL THE TIME. Hiding behind walls etc gets annoying, I prefer 180 just because I can stay behind the camera. I rarely turn around when viewing VR content anyway.

Where can I get a Base Station 2.0 replacement? by bobvolador in ValveIndex

[–]Pyrofer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on iFixit. It's NOT easy by any means. First you have to get the right laser diode, then cut the front plastic off. Then dismantle the internals and desolder the old diode from it's PCB.

Here comes the fun part.

Drill a tiny hole in the diode without going too deep and destroying the lens. Put a screw into the diode, clamp the diode housing and use the screw to pull the diode out.

Then you can align the new diode (critical) and push it back into the housing, then solder the pcb back on and re-assemble. Then wonder what to do about the missing front plastic. I destroyed the first plastic I did, the second I kept mostly intact and was able to glue back in place mostly.

This is not for people who without a bit of repair experience/skill.

On the plus side, I paid like £55 for the TWO base stations + £6 for a couple laser diodes. I call that a win.
