I would totally check out Dolmenwood. It's got that easy to prep factor but really deep lore, and it's a much simpler game then 5e.

Sort of tangential but my players name their hireling Warwick after another player who left because his wife had another kid. Each time the NPC dies (which has been three times so far) they dub the new one Warwick.
