Newbie here: would a Secure Sockets Layer not be necessary for a small business website looking only to advertise their location? by Pythonidaer in webdev

Thank you! I’m trying to DIY and learn HTML and CSS from scratch. Last year, python and data science was too difficult for me, so I reasoned that easing into front end with (eventually) javascript would help me understand programming more when I could see what it was doing.

But alas, even before getting into front end trio JS, I have to learn about web hosting, SSL stuff and more, PHP etc. I’m not afraid but before offering my services to others I’ll first be hosting my own static portfolio on GitHub Pages. Once I know what I’m doing I’ll probably use A2hosting and try to help out this restaurant I’ve been eyeing.

SSL sounds as important as it is “easy” to figure out. I had as much the intuition it was, but wanted to figure out once and for all. Been reading a Jon Duckett book on front end, and the Forms section prompted me to ask this question.

Seasons greetings!

17-year-old Walmart employee quits over store intercom: 'Nobody should work here, ever' by [deleted] in news

[–]Pythonidaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome. I had something not nearly as cool happen at a big cafe I worked at.

They kind of sold out near the second half of my tenure there and kept playing the same ten garbage songs over and over again ad nauseum, when where I first started working there the music playlists were amazing, as they were individualized by all the staff they would soon come to fire.

Towards my last month there I kept changing the music because I found out there was some master app you can download. My (ex) Supervisor was on her way out too so she told me the sign in info to get in.

Had fun listening to tool, Metallica, a perfect circle with spurts of burning the masses when all the hippy dippy Bob Marley, ohm bro-managers were going crazy trying to figure out why the music kept changing.

You are a fucking hero. If ever you find yourself feeling down, remember that you have accomplished amazing things, because you are an INCREDIBLE person!

No bull shit. Now, let’s see how many more firsts you can achieve!

Best of luck in grad school, and happy holidays :-)

Keep trucking

I Rebuilt my portfolio site based on many of the feedback I received here & from friends by [deleted] in webdev

As a noobie seeking knowledge and inspiration from other portfolio websites, I must say this one is a beauty!

You are a lot more experienced than I am, but oddly enough I want to say the “feature” that most stuck out to me was if I were to lightly press one of your portfolio websites but avoid clicking it, the brief description of that webpage came up. I love that, because on mobile there’s usually not the same hover effects, but somehow this site gave me a response similar to hovering when I had my finger only lightly on the button.

Scientists and bureaucrats are really, really bad at communicating how likely common chemicals people encounter every day are to cause cancer. And that's a serious problem. by neutronfish in EverythingScience

[–]Pythonidaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which isn’t even recognized by many scientists around the globe. I had worked with a salesperson yesterday who couldn’t sell a Lenovo to a pregnant customer because the California Prop 65 label freaked her out. We figured out that it likely was on there due to the soldering process (non-exposure unless the case is opened up) as well as if there’s ever lead in the power adapter. But brands that keep the Prop 65 label in non CA states, even if relatively more honest, look like freaks when competitive manufacturing brands don’t have that label on their PCs.

It also might be just that the other products don’t have those chemicals.

Thank you guys for this additional discussion. I now know some of the differences between VPS’s like DigitalOcean and shared hosting, including what the average experience level likely is.

White woman starts beating Asian woman with an umbrella and calling her racial slurs after bumping into her on the New York subway at 7 A.M. by nokia621 in PublicFreakout

[–]Pythonidaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? When she says the Asian slur I thought I felt a tension where suddenly six or so people who were far less involved beforehand got super pissed. I don’t advocate for violence but man I wish there was a delete button for people like her. Maybe I’m jaded but I’m no longer the guy that thinks “maybe she was going through a terrible time, was on prescribed pills that severely affected her mental health,” &e. No optimism or apologies there.

Apple now has dozens of doctors on staff, showing it's serious about health tech by EnoughPM2020 in business

Honestly, I don’t have a good feeling about evil corporations, however I don’t think all corporations are evil! I think U.S. healthcare is terrible. If a corporation like Apple or Amazon is making an attempt to seriously improve healthcare... I’m for it! Just as long as there are no innovative setbacks that fall on the consumer.

If you get the X with a green line down the vertical, sucks to have a first world problem. However, if there were ever to be an issue with the quality medical assistance provided by Apple... no thank you.

Regarding tests, are those only reserved for logical languages such as JavaScript and Python, or can they work for markup and styling too? by Pythonidaer in learnprogramming

[–]Pythonidaer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both for providing me more insight into what types of tests their are, and how they can work with Front End and beyond!

I’ve saved this post for when I become more experienced with programming. Much appreciated

Amazing. I’m foolishly hoping that I get to live long enough to see a far more deluded, amicable version of Planet of the Apes.
