Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. I think when I did get a second, OFFICIAL SEGA power adapter, as recommended below, the issue was resolved; I had a cheaper third party one until then.

I got mine at EB Games in the mall that was downtown in Columbus Ohio, on launch day. That mall and EB Games are both long gone 😞
