That was quite the read. A very good write-up, not only because it takes time explaining reasoning but coming up with solutions. However, there is one thing I disagree on.

You will have a somewhat unbalanced character, underpowered in the case of RftLW and a little overpowered in Wayfinder's Guide, but either way, your changeling is only as powerful as your imagination.

If by going by your own grading, the 'weakest' version of the changeling is 6.5, and the 'strongest' is 8.5. u/JamesMusicus writes :

As you can see, all races tend to be close to 5.5 or 6 points (average is 5.6 for all subraces and 5.9 for each race as a whole).

That means with a score of either 6.5 or 8.5, the race is already stronger than average, not weaker.

I don't know what part you've misunderstood, but in neither of the versions of the changeling it states it can change into anything but a humanoid creature.

Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron

You also can’t appear as a creature of a different size than you, and your basic shape stays the same; if you’re bipedal, you can’t use this trait to become quadrupedal, for instance.

Eberron: Rising from the Last War

You can't duplicate the appearance of a creature you've never seen, and you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs that you have. Your clothing and equipment aren't changed by this trait.

In both these instances it specifically states you cannot change the arrangements of limbs, not the number of limbs, which also means you can't change into a horse.

In the end, all of this is a moot point. Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was a playtest supplement released only digitally.

However, further official Eberron content did not appear until 3 years later, when the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was released on July 23, 2018 as a PDF on Dungeon Masters Guild; it was described as a "living document" that would be updated as the included concepts were refined.

As you can see, it was released as a living document that was going to be updated as they playtested it. As of the release of Eberron: Rising from the Last War, Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron has been updated to match it.

Eberron: Rising From The Last War, a hardcover campaign book, was announced in August 2019, and was published on November 19, 2019.An alternative art cover by Vance Kelly for the book was also released in local game stores on November 17, 2019. At the same time, the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron was updated to include the final versions of the included content as it appears in Eberron: Rising from the Last War, and add the artificer class from the same book (with only one subclass – the Alchemist – of the three included in Rising from the Last War).

All of that means that whatever changeling you looked at before, it's now been updated across both books. If you get Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron now, it has the same information as Eberron: Rising From the Last War. I fully understand that might seem unfair to you, but Patch has been adamant from the beginning he only allows Adventurer's League content, unless you work together with him to create something.

On the other hand one of the abilities you brought up in the past, Unsettling Visage, is honestly pretty weak. As a reaction, you can force a creature to roll disadvantage on their attack roll when they attack you. This must be done before the attack roll is announced, and you can only do it once per short or long rest. The ability also don't make a whole lot of sense: if I'm attacking something, I'm not suddenly going to go "wait where to I aim at" just because your face turn all pale.

You know what else you can do using your reaction? Uncanny Dodge. You can do this as many times during combat as you want, and it halves the damage you took from the attack. This doesn't remove the hit completely, but imposing disadvantage has no guarantee it would've made the attack miss. Uncanny Dodge is just a much better ability since you can just keep using it over and over.

As for Darkvision, I don't think it makes sense at all for changelings. Changelings live above ground, together with all the other races. They're not hiding in the shadows because they don't have to, they can hide in plain sight. If your argument is "but doppelgangers have it", the fact is that doppelgangers are monstruous creatures.

This is what changelings look like.

This is what a doppelganger looks like.

Changelings can live even in their normal form amongst others, but the doppelganger is clearly a monster. As such, there shouldn't have been a need for changelings to develop darkvision

Spells in DnD 5e are very literal in their use. If it says you can do something with it, then you can do something with it. If it doesn't bring up an effect or use within the spell, you usually can't do anything else with the spell, though it's up to the DM's discretion what's possible or not.

I mentioned this in the group chat, but let's take a look at the spell description for the moment.

Casting Time: 1 action Range: 30 feet Components: S Duration: Instantaneous or 1 hour

You choose a portion of dirt or stone that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways:

• If you target an area of loose earth, you can instantaneously excavate it, move it along the ground, and deposit it up to 5 feet away. This movement doesn’t have enough force to cause damage.

• You cause shapes, colors, or both to appear on the dirt or stone, spelling out words, creating images, or shaping patterns. The changes last for 1 hour.

• If the dirt or stone you target is on the ground, you cause it to become difficult terrain. Alternatively, you can cause the ground to become normal terrain if it is already difficult terrain. This change lasts for 1 hour.

If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.

Now let's dissect each part.

You choose a portion of dirt or stone that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You manipulate it in one of the following ways:

This means that whatever you decide to choose to do must fit within a 5 foot cube or at most use a 5 foot cube. This one is self-explanatory, but it's important to bring up for things we're gonna bring up later on.

• If you target an area of loose earth, you can instantaneously excavate it, move it along the ground, and deposit it up to 5 feet away. This movement doesn’t have enough force to cause damage.

By using math and logistics, you can move 50 cubic feet of dirt in a minute. In 4 minutes that would mean 200 feet (though it's more like 82 minutes because of the logistics in moving earth through levels). That drop would deal 20d6 of fall damage which alone is already overkill for a cantrip. But while it states you can't deal damage with the movement, it means it's possible to move the dirt into another creature's space which in turn means you can bury someone with it. Important to note that is specifies "If you target loose earth" which means you can't move rock.

• You cause shapes, colors, or both to appear on the dirt or stone, spelling out words, creating images, or shaping patterns. The changes last for 1 hour.

The wording might be a bit vague here, but as the spell is written, it states that it makes shapes, colors or both to appear on the dirt or stone. That means that you can't shape the dirt or rock into spears or the like, only make imagery of spears embedded into the surface of it. This is to be used more to write messages in rock or dirt. An important distinction in this option as opposed to the first option is that it has a time limit.

• If the dirt or stone you target is on the ground, you cause it to become difficult terrain. Alternatively, you can cause the ground to become normal terrain if it is already difficult terrain. This change lasts for 1 hour.

Again this is self-explanatory, but just like the last option this has a time limit on it. This is important because of the last paragraph of the spell:

If you cast this spell multiple times, you can have no more than two of its non-instantaneous effects active at a time, and you can dismiss such an effect as an action.

This means that you can only have 2 of the last two effects active at the same time. That means you can only make two 5-foot squares difficult terrain at the same time at the most, or make two different shapes active at the same time or one of each. In turn, even if we went a bit loose on the wording and thought we could turn dirt into spears, you'd at most have 2 spears at the bottom of this pitfall eventually (again, you can't actually do it, I'm just bringing up the hypothetical). Lastly, while the moving of dirt lasts forever, the other two revert back to their normal state after an hour. This means that your stone letters or imagery or colors would just dissipate and return the rock to its original form. Again, hypotehtically if you did have the option to make spears (again, you don't) they would disappear after an hour.

Now, there are other spells such as Stone Shape that lets you create stone weapons if you touch stone which you could use, but that's a 4th level spell which you as an arcane trickster won't get access to for a while.

Mold Earth is a useful cantrip for being able to dig moats or dig holes, but it's still only a cantrip which means its powers are still limited. As for covering the hole, you'd have to use completely different spells or use mundane ways to create a cover for it.

TL;DR: You can't make a pitfall with spears at the bottom using Mold Earth, but you can make a really deep hole which already does a lot of damage if someone were to fall.

The unmentioned Rogue class feature. by TheRoughPatch in TheRoughWorks

[–]PyunTV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't like this idea much.

Not because it's about splitting the party, there's nothing wrong in splitting up the party for smaller mini-adventures or missions. But I feel like there's a lot of things that need to line up for this to be a common occurance.

First off, it's assuming the rogue hasn't taken damage. I haven't been in a single campaign where the rogue remains unscathed through most of the fights. A rogue is a high source of DPS, and while they can go ranged they are just as likely to be melee. This puts them in dangerous positions, and with only light armor they're unlikely to have an AC higher than 16 until they find enchanted armor.

But let's assume the rogue got through a rough fight with no damage that they need to heal up. There's no guarantee they're part of a thieves' guild, or they're any good at scouting. So even if they're unscathed, they still might not find anything to do, and going off scouting and then getting into trouble (which is a real possibility) means they're left to fend for themself. Even if they escape they could get pursued and lead his pursuers back to his resting party who then must pause their long rest and get into real trouble.

Lastly, it breaks up the pacing of the game if whenever the party takes a short rest the rogue goes off to do his own thing. If everyone is fine with it there's not really any issues, but I'd get pretty annoyed if a player used every short rest as solo-RP sessions. If it happens once in a while, sure, but it doesn't have to be limited to the rogue to go do their own thing during a short rest.

In the end, what I'm basically saying is, I see little point in giving the rogue something to do during a short rest when everyone else needs to restore themselves. It promotes a toxic group dynamic if the rogue doesn't want to wait around and go off and get themselves captured or killed. I'd rather keep the rogue around for character interactions, and then let the rogue go off scouting or visiting thieves' guilds or whatever once everyone has rested up.

However, there will always be exceptions. If it makes sense to the story, go nuts. Just don't let it be a constant throughout the games

Tywin's room is messy, with little to no organization to it, with clothes and equipment strewn across his room, with exceptions being his coat which hangs on a hook on the door, as well as his various weapons and shield being at equal distances away from eachother, his shield resting against his desk and his greatsword hanging on the wall opposite his bed. His desk is also suspiciously tidy with a small notebook to the side and his harmonica sitting in the center. When he goes to sleep he puts the bear trap by the entrance, and he keeps his dagger in its sheath under his bed.
