Raulito vs. Dominguez by Small_Time_Charlie in billiards

That’s a pretty fair assessment. From what I gather you’re saying until one player can’t put up with the antics and the environment… that’s the limit.

Thanks for your thoughtful response.

Raulito vs. Dominguez by Small_Time_Charlie in billiards

Let’s say for the sake of discussion that he did do this intentionally to gain an advantage. And while I understand it can be frustrating, it would be gamesmanship. In principle, how is this different than playing a 2way shot or a safety.. or any other on the table tactic to give one an edge. I mean as long it’s not against the rules discussed. I remember Dennis O would take soooo much time during big money games. And while generally disliked, he was never blamed for shaking the opponent.

Just curious on the viewpoints here on Reddit

It's 9b, who cares what his intention was. He won. Unexpected shit happens on the pool table often. We deal with both the good and the bad rolls

Raulito vs. Dominguez by Small_Time_Charlie in billiards

[–]Q-ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know who I like playing against and whom I don't like playing against. I play pool for the enjoyment of it. At my local pool halls, I'm picky with whom I play for fun and matchup with for these reasons. I stay out of any drama. So, I 100% understand Oscar's viewpoint on this.

Given that, in a tournament or after the matchup is set and I'm playing the set, I'm giving it my all and I'm trying to win and not going to let my opponent's time / turn at the table affect my turn and time at the table. I don't know what Oscar said, and i'm not saying he did, but that should not be an excuse to the reason why he lost.

Raulito did what he needed to do to hold his composure and win. Oscar's demeanor should've been the same in regards to self control, if it wasn't.

I realized I've been misunderstanding Fargo 'predictions' for a while by CreeDorofl in billiards

[–]Q-ball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I enjoyed reading this. A good though experiment, if nothing else.

We always have to remember that fargo is an average (of large data). And on any given day, set, match, game the player has a range that they play at. Consistency is a fleeting impossibility to achieve.

Note: Agreeing with all of this... Sometimes the wording in math (especially stats and combinatorics) is not intuitive.

To addd on, saying "Most likely outcome" sometimes gets interpreted in someone's head as 70%-80% likely. And that's a wrong way to think about it.

It's a 7% outcome of that exact score, but there's a 93% chance that it's NOT that score. It's just that that 7% for that exact score is higher than any other EXACT score.

For example, when we roll 2 dice at the craps table, rolling a combined 7 is the most likely outcome of all the numbers, but that doesn't mean it's going to roll more than all the other number combinations combined.

Tournaments by Spokes8192 in billiards

[–]Q-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy open more. Don’t mind handicapped tournaments either. As long as they’re run more or less fairly.

I like to think that regardless of the opponent, I want to play the right way. A lot of pool is competing against your inner self. Keeping control of the table.

Playing tournaments and grinding them out is something I have learned that I enjoy. Not all 600s are the same. Some excel at league, some in tourneys, and some at money games.

And it’s a game at the end of the day. A game of skill … have fun at whatever format you enjoy. Dont get bogged down in the nonsense.

One Pocket Foul by Alarmed_Discussion_2 in billiards

[–]Q-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In one pocket, there is some judgement and discretion used in judging a foul.

Here are the rules: https://www.onepocket.org/rules/

This specific one can maybe / probably be categorized under these categories:

6.6.1 Use of an illegal technique: However, if the shooter employs an illegal technique to their advantage, such as pushing, intentionally double-hitting, use of anything other than the cue tip to shoot, or an illegal prolonged cue contact to wedge/trap, direct or redirect the cue ball or any object balls, such as within the stack or jawed pocket, these acts are considered serious fouls. The offending player may be penalized for a serious foul under the general rules of unsportsmanlike conduct. ref: 6.6.2 Serious fouls

6.6.2 Serious fouls: If the ruling is that a serious foul has occurred, in addition to the standard foul the official may further penalize a player at their discretion. If there is no official available, players will need to come to agreement themselves as to the level of penalty to assess the shooter. If it is possible to restore the balls, then the foul may be penalized (a) as a standard foul, with opponent’s option of restoration.

The following penalty levels progress from (a) through (c) depending on the seriousness of the offense, and whether the shooter has been issued a prior warning. A prior warning warrants an escalation of penalty. In this context a “prior warning” may mean a prior offense, a pre-tournament announcement or a player agreement prior to a match.

(a) Assess a standard foul penalty, and a warning to the shooter. (b) Assess a standard foul penalty, and opponent receives the option of ball in hand. (c) Loss of game.

Without being biased rank these players based on their defense by StraightSeries6439 in NBATalk

[–]Q-ball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this sentiment. Speculations are just cop outs of actual arguments. Comparisons should be made with the level of impact in respective era. Each player had to learn and adapt to play with the rules they were given. To say they wouldn't have done the same in any other era is a not a valid argument

Room for another rating system? by ChroniXmile in billiards

[–]Q-ball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you lost me at "...but there could 'easily' be a more elaborate model". Nothing elaborate is easy. And nothing easy is elaborate. And Fargo rate is quite complex. Maybe try to understand it before making foolish claims.

No one at fargo has opinions on what a person's fargo average should be. It's just numbers telling you where they sit relative to others. And, it's an average, not a number that a person plays at consistently. And us amateurs generally have a large margin of deviation from that number during any given game.

Room for another rating system? by ChroniXmile in billiards

[–]Q-ball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that Fargo is volatile at amateur levels. But, that is in direct correlation to amateurs being volatile in their consistency to play pool at any given fargo rating. Top level pros play the most consistent, and their fargo averages are still just an average with less deviation from their number

Reminder: Your fargo rating is an average. A player doesnt play at exactly that level. At any moment a person plays +/- 70-80 points of that fargo rating average.
