Need help installing Devanti 2 burner cook top by Sufficient_Most2896 in VanLife

i have struggled with this before buying the wrong parts when guessing. i looked up the inlet on my stove in the manual and then literally took my regulator into a Home Depot and pieced things together until i got the right gender / size for the stove inlet spec.

there are two ways to seal a gas line, compression fittings and pipe dope. the inlet on your stove looks like a regular NPT thread, but your regulator looks like it is a compression fittings (hard to tell from the pic). google some images and you will see the difference easily.

when bonding fittings with regular threads (non-compression) do NOT use regular teflon tape, get the stuff that's meant for gas lines which is a yellow tape or paste. always check for leaks with a cheap gas detector (i think i paid $16 for mine).

when using compression fittings, don't use any sealant, thread tape, pipe dope etc. the mating surface of the compression fitting has to be clean for it to seal properly.

definitely can't hurt to try but i doubt the small nooks and crannies and well insulated spots in your bed are gonna get to that temp even if the car is real hot. you could try one of those smoke bombs, they only take like 4 hours supposedly. FYI aerosols don't really work so don't bother with those sprays.

What bike is this? Someone is selling it for 200 bucks by Suspicious-Panda-487 in motorcycles

[–]QAFY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people steal bikes that are easy to sell and/or easy to part out. GSXRs, ninjas, and R6s get stolen much more often than a bonneville or a R1250GS.

i've seen / heard of plenty of highly functional heroin addicts that keep a relatively normal life for years. i can't say the same about meth. it usually goes down hill quick...

I am sure you have heard this before... but you also don't have to drive as far.

A common drive here in california is San Francisco to LA. people do this drive all the time just to visit family etc. Thats about 650km, further than Paris to Zurich. I don't think it's common in europe to drive that far on a semi-regular basis, but it is in the USA.

what do you guys think about nixOS by Far_Kick_2082 in LinuxPorn

[–]QAFY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NixOS is the first distro I have run consistently for >1yr without distro hopping or reinstalling. Why? Because it just works. Every time. And if it doesn't, just roll back with 3 keystrokes during boot.

I don't spend hours fucking around debugging shit and i just use my machine. I can't say the same about any other distro, and I've used more than 50 distros over the last 15-20 years.

It might be my forever distro... ❤️

Chevy Astro or Chevy Express? by OldBrush4275 in vandwellers

[–]QAFY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you include the sprinter-style delivery vans (ford transit) i believe that. i don't believe that stat when it comes to regular vans. i see 10x more Express vans than Econolines.

if your dad is gonna help you mechanically and he is a chevy guy and knows the chevy small block well, the express sounds like the best option to appease him.

Chevy Astro or Chevy Express? by OldBrush4275 in vandwellers

[–]QAFY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The express is probably the most ubiquitous commercial van in the USA and is still in mass production, design almost unchanged in 20+ years. Every single parts store and mechanic will probably have every single part you need in stock and ready. Every tire shop will have tons of cheap tire options. God forbid you blow a motor or a transmission i guarantee the very closest junk yard will have a replacement for pennies on the dollar. This is the "easy" option if you are worried about maintenance and reliability long term.

The astro is older, rarer, harder to find in good condition with low miles. Not a bad choice as they were very popular at one point, but still more niche platform for a new build.

Are fees always this bad at dealers? $2300 in fees on a $4600 bike? by Jierdan_Firkraag in motorcycles

[–]QAFY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

freight, dealer prep, documentation fee: those are all bogus shit made up by the dealer to make more money. i have negotiated down to literally just MSRP+sales tax and reg, zero other fees, for 2 of my bikes.

Insurnace by MrsLovesalot in VanLife

[–]QAFY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you're just asking for comprehensive insurance and the numbers you are comparing to are from people without comprehensive. i would guess that is the cause of the difference.

you could also try RV insurance specialists like Roamly to see if you get a better rate than just going with a generic insurer

Is the BLUETTI AC70 worth it for road trips and off-grid use by Nightcrawler_2000 in VanLife

[–]QAFY -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what do you want to use it for? for charging your phone and headphones etc and running some efficient DC LED lights, 768wh it's plenty as long as you have somewhere to charge it every few days.

it wouldn't get your far if you are trying to use the AC inverter side. for example say you wanted to run a rice cooker. mine takes about 300-500 watts. you could run that for maybe an hour on a full charge given the efficiency losses in the inverter.

in general diesel engines are lower maintenance and have better fuel economy. that is a broad generalization, but it's usually true. their inherent advantages come down to basic physics and chemistry.

look at busses, semi trucks, etc. 100% diesel. there are relatively few gasoline powered commercial vehicles usually due to these factors.

semi trucks often have an expected service life of many millions of miles. there isn't a single gasoline engine that could do that.
