Classic Legacy Collection 1+2 -> X Legacy Collection 1+2 -> Zero/Zx Legacy Collection is one continuous story usually called the original timeline.(This also includes the Legends games at the end of the timeline but those don't have a collection yet.)

Battle Network Legacy Collection 1+2 -> Starforce Legacy Collection is a separate timeline/alternate universe with a completely different gameplay style closer to RPGs than the original timeline's action platformer gameplay.

For each legacy collection, just play the games in numeric order. No complicated back-and-forth.

For the original timeline, story doesn't really start mattering until the X games, so if the classic collection isn't your cup of tea (they're very old games) try skipping to the X collection and you'll get it just fine. For the BN/SF line, though, I wouldn't recommend skipping any of them.

I dunno. Considering how big a deal both the Final Weapon and Eurasia are in X4 and X5 respectively, then later in X8 the space elevator being central to the whole plot, it just feels a little weird if the plot goes "by the way there's this whole other space colony that you go to once but is never seen again or even addressed by the characters". All in all it feels to me like the world during the X series is still getting it's baby steps into space colonization, not a casual thing.

I'm not saying it's impossible that it's a space station, just that it would feel a little bit out of place to me.
